About an hour had past and the five teenagers had sat down in a cafe, looking out at the city.
"We need to give him more money." Said Cloda, "I mean I've not got a lot but Mr McCafferson has surely paid over a thousand quid for us- whys he doing this?"
Ollie put down his coffee and looked sincerely into her emerald eyes, "Clodes I think we all know the answer to that.." he sighed, "he's suicidal, he's got a lot of money and he's not got a lot of people to spend it on or to give it to in his will."
Cloda leaned against the back of her chair, putting down her mug and looking out the window,
"He's got every excuse in the world to be and act depressed.. but he always puts on that smile for us." She soliloquised.
Ryan nodded, "Zoe'll come back."
"She really loves him, right?" Asked Lucy,
"Yes, she does." Cloda assured her, pulling down the sleeves of her green jumper and wrapping her hands around her mug.
The other four looked at each other,
"we need to find Cloda a man." Said Jemma.
Cloda laughed, blushing, "no thank you! I'm good!"
"A woman?" Asked Lucy, wrapping her arms around Cloda and kissing her cheek.
Cloda Giggled, "Luce- as much as I love you-"
"Do we know any single good-looking Guys?" Asked Ryan, narrowing his eyes.
"She doesn't need a guy she needs a gentleman." Insisted Ollie, taking a sip of coffee.
"Well I mean... there actually has been someone.." Cloda began.
Everyone put down their mugs and leaned forwards, their hands flat on the table.
"Who?!" They Exclaimed.
"-tell me it's not Mr McCafferson." Ollie Added.
Cloda laughed, "it's not!" She leaned back in her seat, "his name's Charlie, we were good friends when I lived in Ireland. We've gotten back in contact with each other recently."
"Oooh- What age is he?" Asked Jemma,
"Seventeen." Cloda replied,
"How long have you been chatting?" Asked Lucy, "youve been texting, right?"
"You're not reading my messages if that's what you're asking!" Giggled Cloda.
"Why- what've you been sending him?" Teased Ryan,
"Nothing like that you buffoon! He's just.. rather flirty." Insisted Cloda.
"You sure he's not gay?" Murmured Ollie,
"He's less gay than you are; Oliver!" Retaliated Cloda, laughing.
" 'Scuse me, I'm trying to peruse a lady here and you're singling me out as gay?" Ollie chuckled, making Jemma blush, looking up at Ollie,
"Which lady would that be?" She asked him, catching his eyes and smiling as he brushed her hair behind her ear.
"I'm gonna be sick." Chuckled Lucy, turning away slightly as Ollie pursed his lips against Jemma's, quickly kissing her, before laughing and closing his eyes, kissing her again and again.
Martin emerged out of one of the few stores he had been shopping in and made his way towards the bridge he had been longing for.
It was beginning to rain quite heavily now, but he couldn't give a care for the weather.
He strolled quite forcefully until he was on the viewing area of the bridge, where Martha had sat and himself and Emily had their arms wrapped around her, comparing rings.
There was nobody else about, he, for once, had the whole bridge to himself, even in the pouring rain.
There he took out his misused, dusty wedding ring and lent his elbows on the wall of the bridge, looking out to the long long Arno river longing just to be home.. just to be back there with Martha.
He slid the ring back on his finger, a familiar sight. He took out his phone and with instinct, he called Emily.
When the call went to voice mail he was comforted to hear Emily's voice,
"Hiya- this is Emily McCafferson, sorry I've probably forgotten that mobile phones exist- so you can call me on the landline or leave your name and number and I might get back to you in the next decade! Thanks!"
Martin laughed at that, biting his bottom lip as he began to speak, shivering from the cold.
"H-hi Emma." He began, "it's just me- Martin. Your husband. I just wanted to call to see how you and Martha are doing. I guess you two must be having some fun without dad here- all those pamper evenings and princess movies. I'm in awe!" Martin turned around feeling himself tense, "I miss you both so much.. I- I love you Emily, I love you a lot. And you too, Martha. You're the best little genius in this big bad world. I miss you, I miss you so much. But I'm coming home in a week.. and I'll be seeing you both very very soon."
Martin ended the voicemail, shakily putting his phone back in his pocket before bursting into a passion of tears that combined with the prevailing rain.
He took off his ring and pressed it up against his lips, his heart breaking.
"Goodbye Martha." He whispered, "thanks for the memories."
He finally grasped the ring in one hand and threw it as far as he could into the river, watching it disappear forever.
He let himself cry then; that whole part of his life was over, he needed to give it an official ending. His family was gone, his home was gone, everything he had was gone, and that ring was the only trace left of it.
When he caught his breath he turned away from the water, his coat and shirt drenched from the rain.
There was a figure in the distance walking towards him. As it protruded closer, Martin realised that it was a woman, with a long black coat and a pair of knee-high black boots that clicked to the sound of the rain and thunder. She started running towards him, that's when he knew it was Zoë. He recognised her face, even as the rain dripped off it.
"Martin?!" She called, running quickly over to him.
When they were within arms reach Martin pulled her in and gave her the most emotional embrace he had ever had the passion to give.
"Oh Martin... I cant even comprehend wh-" Zoe's cry was cut off by Martin smashing his lips against her open mouth, brushing back her hair and closing his tearful eyes as the rain gushed through their clothes and down their faces. This had been the first time that he had ever initiated a kiss with her, but he was ready for her now, he was ready to start again and to never look back at his life with Emily and Martha.
