Martin and Zoe sat by a table as the band played through the night. The atmosphere between them was awkward, the feeling of refraining from what they wanted, which was to be together. Martin's method of trying to forget was drinking, as per usual was Zoe had the same method, however she didn't want to drink because of her pregnancy.
Martin had had too much to drink already, he was on his fifth beer and was feeling drowsy. Zoe, on the other hand, was supporting the band as they played in order to distract her from Martin.
It was after midnight when the band finished up, the audience had loved them and tipped them well. They had a standing ovation from the crowd of around thirty people that had remained.
After everyone left, Martin and Zoe walked up to the stage to try and help them.
"That was amazing, that was incredible, that was so good you guys should quit your jobs and pursue music that was good." Said Martin, lifting up an amplifier.
"Sir- we don't own the amps." Ollie reminded him, looking oddly pale.
"I just want to see how heavy they are, I've never touched a fender amp." Said Martin, rubbing the amplifier, "it feels nice, good quality."
"Is he drunk?" Laughed Ryan to Zoe,
"He should be by now, 8 beers later." She replied.
"I'm not drunk, jeez Zoe, we're on a school trip we can't." Insisted Martin,
"Come on, Martin let's get back to the hotel." Said Zoe, chuckling as she put her arm around his back.
"You know you look a lot like Marlyn Monroe." Martin said, pointing at Zoe's face.
"N-no I don't." Replied Zoë,
"You've got the Hollywood vibe about you.. blonde hair, dark eyes, red lips- you're basically Norma Jean herself."
"Well you look a lot like Gregory Peck." Said Zoe, still holding him as they walked out of the bar in front of the band who had packed up their instruments and were following them.
"Gregory Peck?" Asked Martin, "wasn't he and Marlyn related?"
"Well then we definitely shouldn't get together." Said Zoe,
"But you're not Marlyn and I'm not Gregory." Added Martin, taking her hand.
"Martin.." Zoe began, looking back to the band that was following them and slipping her hand away.
"Come on, Zoë! What are we waiting for?" Asked Martin,
"You to be sober, perhaps?" Offered Zoë,
"I am sober. And I want you to marry me." Said Martin,
"Don't even go there, Martin!" Repelled Zoë,
"C'mon please!" Begged Martin,
"No!" Zoë Yelled, smiling at how drunk he was.
"I've never seen someone get so openly rejected." Laughed Ollie,
"You can't say nothing!" Said Martin, turning around and wobbling slightly to Ollie, "what was you doin' snogging Cloda?"
Ollie laughed and blushed in response, "just changing it up a bit." Making a brief and awkward eye contact with Cloda before completely looking away.. he couldn't even look at her.
"Oh Oliver the player." Said Martin,
"Scuse me! You were all over that girl at the bar!" Called Ollie, trying to switch the topic from his and Cloda's exchange.
"No no no no no- she was all over me. I think she has a thing with ties. She kept yanking mine."
"Wasn't the only thing of yours she wanted to yank." Muttered Ryan, making both Ollie and he laugh.
"Boys!" Called Zoe,
"Oops she heard that." Chuckled Ryan to Ollie who walked beside him until Martin who walked ahead suddenly stopped.
"Martin?" Asked Zoë, walking up beside him.
"I need those sunglasses." Said Martin, pointing into one of the windows of a shop. The pair of sunglasses he pointed at were yellow and small.
"No you don't, Martin." Zoe assured him.
"You don't understand, Zoë. I need them."
"The shop is closed, Martin. It's almost one in the morning." Said Zoe, "come on the hotel is just over there. Besides, those are kids' sunglasses, they wouldn't fit you."
"I promised Martha I'd get them for her." He sighed.
Zoe wrapped her arm around his shoulder and kissed his cheek, knowing that his drunkenness was just displaying all his raw emotions of guilt.
"I'm a bit sad, Zoë." Murmured Martin,
"I know." Zoë soothed, rubbing his back as they walked back into the hotel towards the stairs.
"have I gotta spend another night on my own?" Moaned Martin,
"Yep." Said Zoe, opening up his door and plonking him into his bed. Martin began to unwrap his tie before throwing it on the floor and undoing his shirt as he saw Zoe leaving.
"Zoe!" He called,
Zoe turned around, holding the door handle as she saw him lie in bed. "Yes?"
"I love you."
Zoe gasped slightly, feeling a shiver fill throughout her but smiling in response, "goodnight, Martin."
She closed the door and leaned against the outside of it, taking a deep breath before she noticed the band leaning against the corridor too.
"He's just drunk." Zoe told them, knowing that they heard what he had said.
"He's not lying though." Said Lucy,
"You've gotta stay with him, Miss." said Ryan, "you know what he's gonna do if he goes home alone."
The very thought of Martin committing suicide terrified Zoe, so she tended to avoid it, but she knew that Ryan was right. But she needed to go to America, this was her job, her future, she needed to care for her child, she needed the money.. but the lingering sensation that she needed to care for Martin too still remained.
"Right.. you guys have a lie in tomorrow, we'll go down to the beach for a while, just knock on my door when you're all up." She told them all, changing the subject.
"Are you gonna go back in there?" Asked Ollie, looking to Martin's door.
"No." Zoe replied, making up her mind and walking away. "Goodnight guys." She concluded.
"Night." Replied Cloda as the rest of the band filled into their rooms. Ollie and Cloda exchanged a brief glance at each other with feelings of immense guilt, before walking into separate rooms.
