Ollie sat on the bed beside Jemma; Ryan had sat down on one of the seats again as they had just arrived in France.
Mr McCafferson had taken up a whole row of seats, he was fast asleep now, and Miss Flynn was driving.
Ollie looked over at Jemma who lay beside him, her long blonde hair spread out on the pillow.
"Hey.." he whispered, smiling at her.
"Hey." She Replied, gradually taking his hand; he knew they couldn't kiss here, it wasn't private enough, but he wanted to. Jemma had been his crush since first year, and in that whole five years he had held off being with anyone else but her.
"Welcome to France." He whispered, moving closer.
"Bonjour." Said Jemma, rolling on her side and placing her leg between Ollie's with her hand on his chest as she gradually closed her eyes in tiredness.
Half an hour later, Martin's eyes opened. Dazed, he stood up and looked around the room, seeing everyone else asleep; Lucy lying on the top bunk, Ryan and Cloda lying on the back seats and Ollie and Jemma in bed together, Jemma's legs intertwined with Ollie's and her head on his chest.
Feeling slightly uncomfortable, Martin looked around for Zoe; the bus had stopped moving, and he looked outside the window to see the sea, with Zoe lying on the sand.
Martin opened the door and walked over to Zoe, who had changed into a white, off-the-shoulder top with long cream jeans.
"Hey." He greeted, sitting down beside her,
"Hi." She Replied, looking into his eyes.
"Where are we?" He asked her, gradually placing a hand on her back.
"Not sure, it was a beautiful day so I just drove down to the beach." She said, shifting over and facing him.
"Ollie and Jem are in a bit of a dodgy position." Laughed Martin,
"I know right.. worried about those two." Giggled Zoë.
Martin moved over and Zoe sat on the edge of his knees.
"You look nice." Said Martin, feeling nervous as he placed his hand on her cheek and moved closer to her.
"Thanks.." She Replied, nudging her nose against Martin's, but just as his lips touched her upper lip she pulled away, looking down.
"Bronagh Watson said that there was some tragic accident at your house a couple months ago.." said Zoe, making Martin take his hand off her cheek,
"W-why did she say that?" He asked, feeling nervous again.
"I don't know?! She said she was worried about you?! I thought I knew you, Martin!" Repelled Zoë, slipping her hands off his knees.
"Well why do you think I was off for three months?!" Yelled Martin, feeling himself shake,
"I don't know?! You didn't tell me?! You told her! Not me! I thought we were close! I thought I meant something to you!" Cried Zoe,
"Course you do, Zoë!" Replied Martin, having awful flashbacks of his arguments with Emily.
"Then what happened, what was this tragic accident?" Asked Zoë, feeling almost jealous.
"Martha.." Sighed Martin.
Zoe glared into his eyes, almost fed up with this 'Martha' talk.
"A..a guy shot through the window of our house and killed her.." said Martin, feeling himself tense again. "Is that tragic enough for you?"
He took his hands off her, shaking, he covered his mouth.
"Martin I-"
"I'm going for a walk.." he sighed, walking off along the shore, leaving Zoe in shock.
The kids had woken up from Martin and Zoe shouting, seeing Martin walk away, they looked back at each other.
"W-what happened?" Asked Cloda, looking around at the others.
"He barely even kissed her and she threw him off." Said Lucy, looking out the window.
"Wait- did they kiss?" Asked Ollie, climbing out of bed. "I'm totally gonna tease him for that!"
"Don't- He's obviously really upset," said Cloda.
"Oh come on! I'd rather have two love bird teachers than two teachers that don't want to speak to each other! Let's go see what's going on." Said Ryan, standing up before he paused. It was as if he simply couldn't move, he stared into plain air, stuck in time.
"Ryan? Are you alright?" Asked Cloda, but Ryan still remained paused.
"You okay mate?" Said Ollie, putting a hand on his back.
"Y-Yeah.. sorry.." said Ryan, sitting down again.
"What was that?" Asked Ollie, sitting down beside him, worried about his friend.
"Some.. weird epileptic thing.." he sighed, "I'm alright, let's go."
Ryan stood up first and walked out of the bus, Cloda and Ollie looked at each other, concerned about Ryan.
They walked over to Zoe, who sat on the beach, almost in tears.
"Miss... are you okay?" Asked Ollie, noticing her cover her mouth.
She couldn't speak, she just felt awful. Martin's daughter was shot.. she was shot and killed.. and just when he was happy again.. she had to remind him.
"We're here for you miss- what happened?"
And then, out of the blue, she was crying. A tear fell from her eye, she caught it with her hand but she knew she wouldn't stop.
Ollie looked up at Ryan, needing guidance, before noticing Lucy jogging over towards Martin who was now far away.
"Sir!" Called Lucy, running towards him, unsure exactly what she would say, just knowing she had to say something.
Martin turned around, his eyes red from thinking about his daughter.
"Everything alright?" He moaned, looking over at her.
"No! No of course it's not." She Replied, "whats going on with you both?!"
Martin gave a sarcastic laugh, "isn't it obvious?!"
"Miss Flynn is in tears and I wouldn't think it's because you kissed her." Said Lucy.
Martin looked at her, "she's in tears?"
"What are you planning to do? Where are you going?" She asked him, walking beside him.
"For a walk." He replied,
"And when are you coming back?" She asked.
"I don't know! I don't know everything! Apparently I don't know anything! Just when I think things are getting better everything just comes back to the same old assumption that everything is my fault!" He yelled before sitting down on the sand.
"It's not your fault." Said Lucy.
"You don't even know.." he muttered,
"Martha was shot, wasn't she?" Said Lucy, sitting down beside him, "i live across the road, I saw the shattered glass I saw the police..."
Martin looked over at Lucy, "it's only day one and I'm already like this.." he sighed.
"It's only day one," she reminded, "Come on things can only get better."
"You're a strong girl, Lucy." He told her, "stronger than me."
Lucy gave a mere laugh, "I don't think so.." she sighed, clutching her wrist,
"How's your arm?" He asked, noticing that she was still wearing long sleeves.
Lucy shrugged her shoulders, "Okay." She said,
"Can I have a look?" He asked.
Lucy hesitated before she nodded, looking down in dread as Martin saw the new bruise marks, all along her arm,
"Oh my god.." said Martin, "I've got to say something I can't let this go on!"
"Please don't!" She begged,
"But it's gotten worse.. Lucy.."
A tear rolled down Lucy's eye,
"Oh my god, Lucy.. you're really hurt." He said, rolling down her sleeve as Lucy burst into tears.
Martin sighed, people had worse problems than him..
"I've got to tell someone- I can't let you continue to get hurt." He said,
"My dad's so upset!"
"He can't let that out on you!"
"But he has to.." Sighed Lucy, "and it'll keep on happening until mum dies."
Martin looked at Lucy, lost for words.
"I think we all need to talk." He said, looking back at the bus in the distance. Knowing that the rush of happiness was over.
