Chapter 6
The next morning, they awoke to find that the storm had died out and the sun was shining. The water in the camp had gone down significantly, and they could see the tops of dens poking out of the water.
Midnightpaw dragged herself up. Everything hurt. All of her muscles were sore from swimming. "Who's alive?" she asked groggily.
"You," Lavenderpaw said, rather unhelpfully. "Me. Sunpaw, Foxpaw, Snowkit, Blankkit, and Longlive."
"What about the cat me and Foxpaw got?" Midnightpaw asked.
Lavenderpaw shook her head. "Redheart," she murmured. "Too late."
"Oh," Midnightpaw sighed. Then she heard something outside. A kit's mewl, desperate and thin.
"That's a kit!" Sunpaw cried, jolting upwards. Together, Midnightpaw, Foxpaw, and Sunpaw limped outside on sore paws and saw a tiny kit standing on the rim of camp, just above where the waterline had been last night.
They made their way to the kit. It was Jewelkit, tiny and panicked. Below her, on a small ledge, lay Willowstar, limp and waterlogged.
"Sunpaw, make sure Jewelkit's okay. Get him back to Highrock. Foxpaw, come with me to check on Willowstar."
Foxpaw followed Midnightpaw down to the ledge their leader was on.
"Willowstar?" Midnightpaw murmured. She pressed her paws on his chest, the way Lavenderpaw had to Blankkit the night before, but nothing happened. She pressed an ear to the spot that she thought his heart was. Nothing.
"Too late," Midnightpaw murmured, echoing Lavenderpaw's words from earlier. "Too late."
"He's dead?" Foxpaw asked, devastated.
"He's dead," Midnightpaw confirmed. "Goldrush is the new leader."
Foxpaw didn't answer. Midnightpaw knew what she was thinking.
If she's even still alive.
