Chapter 5
It was her sister's fidgeting that saved Midnightpaw's life.
Normally, she hated how much Foxpaw moved in her sleep. The noise kept Midnightpaw awake all night. Unlike Sunpaw, who passed out the second he hit the nest, Midnightpaw, true to her name, loved to stay up and only began to feel tired after Foxpaw's fidgeting began.
That particular night, she was curled in a tight ball, trying to keep the late leaf-fall chill off, and listening to the rain drum on the roof. A droplet fell onto her fur and she shifted.
Suddenly from outside a cracking sound broke through the rain.
Midnightpaw shot to her feet. Her fur stood on end. What was that?
Lavenderpaw raced into the apprentice's den. "The wall," she gasped. "The one that keeps out the river- it's breaking!"
"Everyone up!" Midnightpaw yowled. "Wake up! Foxpaw, Sunpaw, up! The camp's flooding!"
"What?" Sunpaw asked groggily.
"Get up, you stupid furball!" Midnightpaw cried. "Or we're all going to die!"
That got Sunpaw and Foxpaw up. They jolted to their feet and turned to Midnightpaw. "What do we do?" Foxpaw demanded.
Another crack split the air. "Run!"
Midnightpaw herded them out of the den. But before they even made it to the Highrock, the loudest crack yet rang through the air.
Slowly, they all turned to face the wall.
A spiderweb of cracks raced along the wall. With an ominous rumble, the wall collapsed and a huge wave of water broke through.
In the second before it hit her, Midnightpaw braced herself.
The water knocked her off of her feet. She tumbled paws over tail, scraping painfully against the ground. After a few moments, she managed to reach out and hook her claws into a scrap of wood, anchoring her to the ground, but that broke, too.
Around her, she felt the water settling- barely. She managed to swim to the surface, catching a few breaths of air before she was knocked under again.
Get to the Highrock, she thought vaguely. She managed to stay afloat long enough to catch a glimpse of the stone- and of three furry shapes on it- before she went under again, but it was enough to orient herself. She struggled through the waves before managing to pull herself onto the stone, coughing and gasping. She looked up to see Lavenderpaw, Sunpaw, and Foxpaw.
"Are you okay?" Sunpaw asked.
"Fine," Midnightpaw groaned. A tiny, furry shape whisked past her.
"That's a kit!" Foxpaw cried.
"On it!" Sunpaw cried. Before they could stop him, he dove into the water. After a few moments, he surfaced, a scrap of white fur clenched firmly in his jaws.
Midnightpaw dove in after him, dragging him and the kit to the shore. Sunpaw curled around the shape, shivering.
"It's Blankkit," Foxpaw said. "Is he-"
"No," Lavenderpaw said firmly. She removed the kit from Sunpaw's grasp. The tom reached for him weakly, and Midnightpaw remembered that Blankkit was Sunpaw's half brother.
"It's okay," she said. "Lavenderpaw won't hurt him."
Lavenderpaw pressed her paws down on the kit's chest. He coughed and water spewed from his mouth. "He'll be okay," she reported.
"Sunpaw had the right idea!" Midnightpaw had to shout over the wind. "Where's the nursery?"
Lavenderpaw scanned the camp. "There," she said, pointing with her tail.
"Okay, then-" Midnightpaw was interrupted by a rasping voice.
"Apprentices?"
They turned to see a wet and bedraggled Willowstar dragging himself onto the Highrock.
"Willowstar!" Foxpaw exclaimed. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," he announced. "The kits- are they-?"
"We were about to get them," Midnightpaw said.
"Don't!" Willowstar ordered. "Stay here. I'll get them."
Before they could stop him, Willowstar dived into the water.
"Do we actually have to wait here?" Foxpaw asked.
"Absolutely not," Midnightpaw decided. "Lavenderpaw, you stay here. Keep Blankkit warm. Everyone else, get in there. Save anyone you can. Let's go!"
With that, she leapt into the icy water. Chilled to the bone, she forced herself to open her eyes into the freezing water. She saw a faint moving shape to her left, and swam towards it. She found an unrecognizable cat huddled around a kit. Gripping both of them, she tried to swim upwards. After a few tries, someone swam over to help her and together they fought their way to the surface. Midnightpaw fought the urge to gasp and let go of the cats. Carefully, she dragged them onto the rock. Blinking water from her eyes, she saw that Sunpaw was the cat who'd helped her.
"It's Snowkit," Sunpaw mewed. "And Longlive. Where's Jewelkit?"
"We'll find her," Midnightpaw promised.
Sunpaw turned to Lavenderpaw. "And Longlive? Will she be okay?"
Lavenderpaw frowned. "I...I'll do my best, but...just get back in the water, okay?"
"Okay," Midnightpaw agreed, leading Sunpaw away from his mother and sister. "It'll be alright," she promised.
"Let's go," Sunpaw urged her, sliding into the water. Midnightpaw followed him. She bumped into an unconscious cat and tried to drag them to the surface, but they were too heavy. Midnightpaw broke away and took a breath of air, then dove down again. The next time she came up for air, she spotted her sister's ginger head bobbing in the water. "Foxpaw!" she shouted. "Over here!"
Foxpaw turned towards her. "Where?"
"Here!" Midnightpaw called. Foxpaw paddled towards her.
"What?"
"Cat," Midnightpaw gasped. "Too heavy."
Foxpaw nodded and dove under with her. Together, they managed to get the unconscious cat back to the Highrock.
They dove and ducked in the water until nearly moonhigh, but they couldn't recover another cat and they were all too exhausted to keep going. They barely managed to drag themselves into Willowstar's den before all of them passed out.
