CHAPTER 6

I stood on the front porch of my house with shaky hands. I fiddled with my keys as I looked back to Skye who was waving toward me, and I took a deep breath.

I'm thankful she was still there and ended up taking me home. Ryan's house felt empty as everyone was still asleep so we ended up leaving early due to my parents having heart attacks at home.

I unlocked the door and walked in with the door squeaking as I did so. I glanced around my home, looking for my parents.

Good, they must have gone to work.

I started to drop my bag at the door along with my shoes, but as soon as I raised my eyes back up my Mother was standing at the door with a furious look on her face. Her arms were crossed, and she narrowed her brown eyes at me.

"Good morning..." I mumbled sheepishly, but all she did was shake her head in disbelief.

"Where the hell were you?!" She whispered yelled as she grabbed ahold of my arm, pulling me down the hall.

"Mom, I'm sorry! I was out with Skye and-"

She spun around, stopping us in the hallway, "No, Sam. I don't want to hear excuses, your Father and I had a rough night last night, and finding out our daughter was nowhere to be found didn't help one bit."

I looked down at the floor with a feeling of regret swirling in my head, "I know, I was going to come back."

"That's not the point! You never told us where you were going or when you were going to be back." Her voice wavered throughout her sentence as she flickered her eyes around my face. "You know how important it is after what happened to your brother."

My heart dropped at her mentioning Luke, making me zone out for a moment as she rambled on about how important it was to let her know what was going on.

My brother Luke was only a year older than me, but two years ago he lost his life in a fatal accident. Ever since my parents have been more strict about places I go, or who I drive with.

It's understandable though, so this one is of me for not telling her what was going on.

"You know your father and I are very understanding, but when you do shit like this?" She gave me a look of disbelief, shaking her head slightly with wide eyes.

"I'm sorry, Mom." I rubbed the side of my arm, not sparing a glance at her.

A long sigh escaped her lips before she pulled me in for a hug, making me hug her back.

"Please, let us know what's going on." She begged, backing up as she looked down at me with sad eyes.

I nodded slowly before letting go of the hug, "Will do."

"By the way, you're not off the hook, you're grounded." She threw me a small glare, and I let out a sigh as I started to make my way up the steps.

"Yeah, yeah. I saw that one coming from a mile away." I groan, making my Mom giggle below the stairwell.

Little do they know, grounding doesn't do anything. I usually stay at home anyway, doing absolutely nothing. I still let them have their parent moments though thinking it actually does something.

I felt a buzz from my pocket and raised my phone to see who it was.

Sammy.

Then all the memories came flooding back. Him winning at beer pong all the way up to the point he had to drag me to Ryan's guest room.

Sammy: oh sorry for the late response, I was at a party last night and it got a little hectic

Eviee: Huh, wow I thought you died or something but that makes sense too :)

I grinned down at my phone at my response before tumbling into the wall, making me fall backward onto the floor.

Of course, this would be the start to my day.

I groaned and flipped the door off before getting back up and making my way into my room.

Sammy: no I sadly did not die, but I did cheat at beer pong last night

My eyes squinted as I read what that fucker said.

Eviee: Is it even possible to cheat at that game?

Sammy: yeah, fill your own cups up with water as the other team has alcohol ;)

I blinked a few times at that message.

He did what?

I'm going to dig a grave for this fool and bury him.

Eviee: Wow Sammy, you're such a badass

Sammy: yeah, felt a bit bad though. the girl got absolutely wasted but don't worry, I still helped her to bed

Eviee: Ah, I see, that's your way of flirting

I chuckled at my comment before flopping down on my bed, it sure was going to be a boring night but I was used to it. Skye being my only friend and all, we didn't do much but hang out with each other.

Sammy: no way! the girl and I are so not friends

Eviee: That poor girl, she's missing out on how great you are :)

I truly wanted to throw up at the comment I just made, but at the same time, thought it was the funniest thing ever because he was so buying all the small comments I've been making.

It took him a few minutes to respond, so I ended up putting my phone to the side to turn Netflix on.

Cheers to yet, another boring night in my bedroom.

Alone once again.

"Wow, look who survived the weekend." Sammy plopped down in the seat next to me making me roll my eyes.

"Why are you sitting next to me?"

"Because there's no seating chart in this class." He stated, but I just stared at him in annoyance.

"Exactly." I pushed further with a monotone voice.

"Wow, don't be so rude to someone who helped you over the weekend." He threw his backpack on the ground as it was unzipped, and started to dig around in it for who knows what.

"I'm going to thank Ryan for that," I said without sparing a glance toward him, keeping my eyes on the front as the bell rang with the teacher starting her lesson.

"Damn it." I heard a mumble escape his lips, making me flicker my eyes onto him for a short moment. "I forgot my textbook."

"What a shame."

Sammy rolled his eyes before grabbing his phone out of his backpack, and I just went back to staring ahead at the teacher until I felt a buzz from my pocket. I already knew before I knew that it was Sammy. My heart sped up at the fact he was sitting right beside me but had no idea I was the one he was messaging.

I slowly take my phone from my pocket and read the words on my screen.

Sammy: hey eviee, sorry for the late response. hope you're having a good day :)

I scrunch my eyebrows at the message, slowly turning toward Sammy who put his phone on his desk. I just couldn't believe that was the same guy who was messaging Eviee.

Eviee: Wow, I can't believe you forgot about me

Sammy: I could never

Eviee: Uh huh...I don't know about that

I glanced toward Sammy who now had his phone below the desk as he was typing away, and for a moment I felt bad as I watched his lips turn into a smile, but that was soon swept away as I remembered all the shit he had put me through.

Sammy: believe what you want, either way, I'll prove it to you

Eviee: You're funny

I wasn't sure what else to say afterward and didn't receive anything else for a few minutes. He was actually paying attention to class which I wish I could say was not normal, but he was one of the top students in our grade.

I always hated to hear it, because I hated him.

Sammy: let's play 20 questions

I grinned at his question and started to type away.

Eviee: 20?! That's so many...kidding I'd love to

Sammy: okay let's do 19

I rolled my eyes at his response and decided to set my phone to the side for now.

19 questions for later.

"I'm sorry I'm late Mom." I rushed through the glass door with the bell ringing above.

My parents owned a small diner in our town, and I usually would pick up shifts and help them all the time.

I mean, what else did I have to do other than be depressed in my room about a breakup?

"Sweetie, it's no problem! It's been slow today anyway."

My mom came out from behind the counter in her red apron with another in her hands. She handed it to me and I gave her a small smile.

"Why thanks, Mom." I strap the apron on, glancing around at the diner. There really was nobody here today.

"How was school?" She asked, going back behind the counter as she started to make new coffee.

I skipped over to the front, sitting on the stools of the counter that overlooked the rest of the diner. It was a small, yet spacious place.

"Eh, it was school." I started to spin side to side as I caught a glimpse of people walking up to the door. "Oh! Customers, don't worry, I'll get them." I winked toward my Mom as I jumped down from the stool, making my way to the door slower and slower until my eyes realized who it was.

Sammy Sandars.
