Chapter 6
AN: So, I changed the cover again, and I like this one a lot better than the last one, yay!
It was the night of the prom and Katherine was just a little bit excited. Not that she would admit that to anyone. But honestly she'd never thought she'd get to go to prom, so she was just happy to go, even if it was with her fake boyfriend. And luckily, her parents were out of town on business, so none of them had to suffer through the awkward picture taking. Once they got there, Katherine looked at Jack.
"So, now what do we do?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean... I've never been to a dance before. What does one do it dances?"
"Well..." Jack thought for a moment. "I guess, the first logical thing to do would be do get some punch."
"Yes, because you're the most logical person I know."
"Shut up. Let's just go get some."
"Fine, fine." Katherine rolled her eyes and started walking, forcing Jack to catch up to her. She looked at him as she was pouring the punch into her cup. "So, how do we know this isn't spiked?"
"We don't." He laughed. "In fact it probably is. We just have to hope it's not."
"So, we're just going to drink this probably-spiked punch, and pretend to be oblivious to the fact that it's spiked, and that we're most likely going to end up drunk."
"Yup."
"Okay. Great." Katherine decided to just accept that. Besides, if she did end up drunk and anyone found out, she could honestly say that it wasn't on purpose.
oOo
Katherine had discovered that she liked the punch. A lot. So, of course, she had three cups of the stuff. And it was definitely spiked. Because, while she'd never been drunk before, she was pretty sure she was drunk now. Jack, however, had only had two cups, and was much less of a lightweight than Katherine. So, he was mostly just keeping an eye on her, making sure she didn't do something stupid.
"Hey." She said from where she was sitting next to him.
"Hey." Jack responded, looking at her.
"Do you wanna dance with me?" Jack laughed.
"Yeah, sure. I'll dance with you, Kath." So, Katherine laughed and pulled him onto the dance floor just as a slow song began to play. She draped her arms lazily around his neck, and he wrapped his securely around his waist, mostly to make sure she wouldn't fall over when she tripped, as he was almost certain she was going to do.
"You know something?"
"What?"
"You have nice eyes." Katherine informed him, and Jack raised his eyebrows.
"Oh, I do?"
"Mhm." She nodded. "And... and your... your face."
"My face?" He couldn't hold in a laugh at that. "What about my face?"
"Your face is a nice face. A very handsome face."
"Glad to hear you think so."
"I like your hair, too." Katherine moved in closer to Jack and tangled her fingers into his hair.
"Yeah? I like yours too."
"Yours is better."
"Nah, I think yours is way better than mine." Jack decided to play along. "You got those cool bangs, and my hair's just a crazy mess." She giggled. He didn't think he'd ever heard her giggle before. That's how he could really tell she was drunk, he supposed.
"I still like it, though." They danced for another song in silence, and stayed on the floor as another song started (and Jack wondered what kind of person was in charge of the music, that they would play more than two slow songs in a row). They were dancing in a comfortable silence, and that was all it was. Katherine moved closer. Jack thought nothing of it, until she pressed her lips against his. Startled, he quickly pulled away, and he thought Katherine looked hurt for a split second, but that look quickly disappeared.
"Kath..." Jack looked at her wide eyed, and she shook her head.
"Sorry." Katherine turned and ran out. Jack stood, staring for a moment, before coming to his senses and running after her.
oOo
"Katherine. Katherine!" Jack yelled, running after Katherine.
"Leave me alone!" She yelled back, turning to face him as he caught up to her. "Just... leave me alone."
"I'm not going anywhere, Kath."
"Look, I'm sorry, that was stupid of me, I don't wanna talk about it."
"Katherine. You're drunk, it's fine, but at least let me walk you home."
"Why?"
"Because you're drunk!" Jack repeated. "Look, I'm not letting you go home and spend the night by yourself, I know you've never been drunk before, you don't know how to handle it. So, come home with me, spend the night at my place – don't give me that look, you know I don't mean it like that. Come spend the night at my place, I'll help you deal with the hangover, and then we can talk about... the kiss." Katherine stumbled over her words for a few seconds before finally relenting.
"Okay."
