Chapter 7
Days passed; they knew it was the morning of the festival. Nami headed down the steps to the flower shop; she saw her dad was still there.
"You're going to be late you don't leave now," Nami said.
"Morning!" Dad greeted her with a big smile. "I'm not going to work today?"
Nami started to panic. "Please tell me I didn't get you fired!"
Dad started to laugh. "Not at all! I'm staying back to help and the shop." Nami let out a sigh of relief. " Your mother and I will be watching the festival from here together."
"We'll be rooting for you Nami," Mom said as she walked over going over with a paper; she was going over the transactions from yesterday. "Make sure to not be harsh on Shotot."
"No promises, Mom," Nami said. "It's the sports festival, I am going out there to give me all even if it means destroying Shoto in the process."
Sana turned to her husband. "Maybe you should go into the agency, less likely to get fired."
Ryo laughed more. "It's a sports festival, Sana...this is a huge step for them in their hero journey." Mom sighed.
"Don't worry too much Mom," Nami said. "Shoto is much stronger than I am...I just need to hope I am more precise in my decisions to outmaneuver him."
"Do your best!" the two urged.
"Morning, Takedas," Shinso greeted as he walked into the store. After getting showered with words of good luck, the two students set off for the sports festival.
"Your mom went a bit overboard," Shinso said as he stared at the bouquet of flowers in his hands.
"She didn't make you pay for them," Nami pointed out. "Let's give it our all today, Hitoshi!" She patted him on the bit harshly.
"Putting friendship aside for this," Shinso said as he glanced down at her. Nami herself was carrying a large number of hydrangeas flowers. "No harsh feelings." Soon they were at the school; they went separate locker rooms; once that held each class.
"Hey, hey, hey, guys!" Nami greeted kicking in the door.
"Woah!" Urakaka breathed as she popped up by her. "Are those all for you?"
"Nope!" Nami denied. "My mom had me bring a hydrangea for each of you for good luck!"
Yaoyorozu put a hand over her mouth and blushed Nami started to hand them out. "How thoughtful!"
"Please refrain from kicking doors open," Tokoyami advised. "It's not polite."
"Aw, man," Ashido groaned as she pulled at her track clothes. "I was totally hoping I could wear my costume."
Ojiro was stretching next to her. "At least everyone'll be in uniforms. That'll keep things fair, right?" All the girls were beyond happy to receive a flower; some of the boys were unsure how to feel.
"I wonder what they'll have in store for us in the first round," Sato said as Nami watched in concern as Mineta heavily sniffed his flower.
"No matter what they've prepared, we must persevere," Tokoyami advised.
The door slid open revealing Iida. "Everyone, get your game faces on! We're entering the arena soon!"
"For good luck!" Nami urged as she gave Iida a flower; he melted a bit feeling the love.
"Swallow your fear, swallow your fear, swallow your fear!" Mineta said as he pretended to eat from his hand.
"Midoriya," Todoroki said as Nami was giving Bakugo his flower; he was trying to refuse it and Nami was refusing to let him refuse it.
"Hey, Todorok, what's up?" Midoriya asked. They all looked over in curiosity.
"From the objective standpoint, I think it's fairly clear that I'm stronger than you," Shoto said.
"Uh--Um, yeah," Midoriya agreed as he lowered his head a bit.
"However, you've got All Might in your corner, helping you out," Shoto said. "I'm not here to pry about. But know that I will beat you.
Kaminari gasped. "Woah! What's up with all these declarations of war lately?"
Kirishima got up walking over to the two. "Yeah, what's the big deal?" He put a hand on Shoto's shoulder. "Why are you pickin' a fight all of a sudden? And right before we get started--"
Todoroki shoved him off. "We're not here to be each other's friends." He made his way to the door. "Don't forget this isn't a team effort." Nami and Bakugo glanced at each other and then back at Todoroki.
"Wait a sec, Todoroki," Midoriya said; they all looked at him. "I don't know what's going through your head or why you think you'd need to tell me that you'll beat me. And, yeah, of course, you're better than me. In fact, you probably have way more potential than anyone in the hero course. That's why you got in so easily."
"Midoriya, maybe you're being a little hard on yourself, and us," Kirishima said trying to diffuse the situation.
"No," Midoriya denied. "He's right you guys. All the other courses--they're coming for us with everything they've got. We're all gonna have to fight to stand out." Todoroki faced Midoriya. "And I'll be aiming for the top."
"Fine," Shoto said. After that intense conversation, everyone started to head out to the field.
"Uh, Midoriya," Nami greeted stopping him from leaving the room.
"Huh?" Midoriya asked facing her. "What is it, Takeda?"
"Take two," Nami said as she held up to flowers. "If you're aiming to take down, Todoroki, you're going to need all the luck you can get."
Midoriya shook his head. "I am aiming for the top."
"Yeah, and you are going to have to defeat Todoroki if you want that spot," Nami said. "It's as you said Todoroki probably has the most potential out of everyone in the hero course." Midoriya nodded. "Take them."
"Thanks," Midoriya smiled; they then went and joined the rest of their class. They could hear the screams as they walked down the tunnel.
"Hey!" Present Mic greeted the commentator's box. "Make some noise, all you rabid sports fans!" The cheers were defeating. "Get those cameras prepped, media hordes! This year we're bringing some of the hottest performances in sports festival history, guaranteed! I've only got one question before we start the show: Are you ready!? Let me hear ya scream as our students make their way to the main stage!" Class 1-A stepped onto the field; the place was even bigger from the field ground pov; across the field, Nami could see the other classes entering other points. "Welcome back to the UA Sports Festival! Where up-and-coming heroes leave everything on the field as they fight for the chance to achieve worldwide fame and celebrity! This first group are no strangers to the spotlight! You know them for withstanding a villain attack--the dazzling students lighting up your TVs with solid gold skills! The heroes course students of Class 1-A!"
Midoriya's nerves were already getting the best of them. "Uh...I didn't know there'd be so many people."
"I hope we're still able to give our best performances, even though all these eyes are watching," Iida wished. "I suppose it's jsut another part aspect of being a hero we'll all have to learn to get used to."
"Just picture everyone in their underwear," Nami advised. "The viewers and the other classmates."
"Yeah, I don't need that image," Sero shook his head.
"Present Mic sure did talk us up a lot," Kirishima said as he observed everyone. "Kinda makes me nervous. How you feeling', man?"
"I'm not worried," Bakugo denied. "Makes me wanna win this thing even more.
"They haven't had been getting nearly as much screentime, but this next group is still chock full of talent! Welcome hero course Class 1-B! Next up, general studies classes C, D, and E! Support classes F, G, and H! And finally business classes, I, J, and K! Give it up for all of UA's first-year contestants!" Everyone stood in the center as Midnight stood on a stage facing them.
"Now, the introductory speech!" Midnight announced.
"Uh, someone should talk to Midnight about what's she's wearing," Kirishima said as everyone in the stadium was blushing a bit.
"Yeah," Kaminari nodded. "That costume should come with a warning."
"Is it really appropriate apparel for a high school game?" Tokoyami asked.
"She's definitely pushing regulations in terms of costumes," Nami said.
"She's the reason regulations were made," Midoriya said. Mineta on the other hand was all for it.
"Silence, everyone!" Midnight ordered as she waved her whip thing. "And for the student pledge, we have Katsuki Bakugo!" Everyone looked at him in surprise.
"That gremlin?" Nami asked as he started to go up.
"He's the first-year rep?" Midoriya asked.
"I guess that hot-head did finish first in the entrance tests," Sero recalled.
There was a sigh from a girl in general studies course. "Only for the hero course exams." They looked over at her; Nami noticed Hitoshi standing around that area.
"Oh, right," Midoriya nodded.
"That girl obviously hates us," Sero noted.
"Yeah, and we've got Bakugo to thank for them not liking our class," Kaminari said as refocused on their classmate as he reached the microphone.
"I just wanna say..." Bakugo began into the mic. "I'm gonna win."
"I knew he'd say something like that!" Class 1-A exploded as the rest of the students booed him.
"What'd he say!?"
"Class 1-A is so full of themselves!"
"Get him off the stage!"
Iida got near the stage; air chopping at Bakugo. "Why would you say something so disrespectful? You're representing us all!"
Bakugo looked at them, putting his thumb down. "Not my fault the rest of you are just stepping stones to my victory."
"I'm gonna crush this overconfident jerk!" Tetsutesu declared as he clenched his fist. "I can't wait to knock 'im down a size!"
"I hope the pact I made with him doesn't bite me in the ass," Nami groaned as she lowered her head.
"It was foolish for you to make a pact with him in the first place," Ashido said as she put a hand on Nami's shoulder.
"Without further ado, it's time for us to get started!" Midnight announced as the screen turned to pick for the first game.
"UA really doesn't believe in letting us catch a breath, huh?" Urakaka asked.
"This is where you begin feeling the pain!" Midnight announced. "The first game of the festival!" The board started to spin through options. "What could it be?" It finally stopped. "Ta-dah!"
"So, it's going to be an obstacle course," Izuku said.
"All 11 classes will participate in this treacherous contest," Midnight began to explain to rules. "This track is four kilometers around the outside of the stadium." She raised her whip thing. "I don't wanna restrain anyone, at least in this game." She licked her lips. "As long as you don't leave the course, you're free to do whatever your heart desires." The crowd cheered more. "Now then, take your places, contestants." Everyone did as they were told; the light turned green. "BEGIN!" Everyone began to shove through the door.
"And we're off to a racing start!" Present Mic announced. "How 'bout some color commentary, Mummy Man?"
"How did you talk me into this?" Aizawa asked in annoyance.
"What should we be paying attention to in the early stages of the race?" Present Mic asked.
"The doorway," Aizawa answered.
"Hey, hey!" students shouted as they tried to shove past each other.
"You're trampling me!"
"This is too narrow!"
"HEY!" someone shouted. "WATCH YOUR FOOT!" Up above; Nami had crawled on top of the crowd; she had created a stellar snowboard; and was rolling over everyone.
"That there is Nami Takeda from Class 1-A!" Present Mic. "The new constellation coming to you!" When Nami got to the end of the doorway; she released her board; jumped down in front of everyone and began running. She heard many people cry in groans; she glanced back to see Todoroki was close behind her and he had frozen the door way.
"Apologies!" Todoroki said as Nami slipped on the ice that went under her feet; she fell on her butt and began to spin violently.
"Ow!" Nami huffed as she stopped herself from spinning; Shoto ran past her without looking back.
"No fair!"
"So cold!"
There was an explosion; Nami looked to see that Bakugo, Aoyama, Kirishima, Tokoyami, Ojiro, and Yaoyorozu all managed to get over the ice.
"Nice trick, Todoroki!" Yaoyorozu shouted; he glanced back at Nami and got to her feet again; this time she created stellar energy below her feet allowing her just a bit above the ice.
"I won't let you get away so easily!" Bakugo roared as he put his hands behind him. "You icy-hot bastard!"
"You froze me in place once before," Ojiro said as he used his tail to bounce off the ice. "It won't happen again!"
'Let's try that move I've been working on,' Nami thought to herself as she create two stars; with one hand she moved one over to in front of Todoroki just above. 'STELLAR TELEPORTATION!' Nami jumped into the other star pointed just above her, and then felt her body get sucked through one end and appear out the other; she appeared in front of Shoto slamming her knee into him; his eyes went wide as he got pushed back a bit. Nami spun; taking off as soon as her toe touched the ground. Nami can use this move only a couple of times; she can stellarly teleport at a max distance of a football field; thankfully Todoroki wasn't too far ahead of her for it to work.
"HOLY BEETLJUICE!" Present Mic shouted as the crowd cheered wildly. "TAKEDA IS TAKING FIRST PLACE FROM TODOROKI!"
In the back, Hitoshi was watching as he got carried by others. 'When did she put a move like that together?' Everyone starting to catch up to the two in the lead.
"I didn't expect so many people to dodge that," Todoroki said as he started to catch up to Nami. "Especially from other classes." Nami glanced at the sound of gasp; she saw Mineta use his sticky balls to bounce to avoid the ice.
"You two think you're so smart!" Mineta shouted. "But I've outsmarted you! Ha! How pathetic, Takeda! Todoroki!" He grabbed Pop off his head. "Eat this! My special attack! Gra--" Suddenly, he got slammed into the side by a robot; he began rolling away into the wall screaming.
"Mineta!" Nami gasped.
"Are you okay?" Midoriya asked as he held out his hand. They all stopped to observe the robots in front of them.
"Targets acquired," a robot said. "Terminate them."
"These guys again!" Nami exclaimed as she put her arms up.
"Those robots from the entrance exam!" Midoriya said.
"Ooh!" Present Mic shouted. "Enemies have shown up out of nowhere! I bet we're in for a treat here! A test of strength and cunning! It's a Robo Inferno!"
"Are those the zero-point villains from the practical test?" Kaminari asked as the others caught up.
"Seriously?"
"This is what they meant by 'obstacles?'
"So this is what the other students faced in their entrance exams," Shoto said as the robot's shadows began to engulf them.
"Where's the school even get the funding for these things?" Yaoyorozu asked.
Todoroki began an ice attack as the robots came down at them. "They obviously went through a lot of trouble, but I wished they prepared something a little more difficult." The moment his hand touched the ground; he froze all the robots at once; he started to skate through them. "Especially since my dear-old dad is watching.
"Dude!" a student shouted as Shoto began to run. "He stopped the robots!"
"Look! Between their legs!"
"We can get through!"
"Careful, now," Todoroki warned as he glanced back. "I froze them while they were off their balance." The robots started to fall over. "On purpose."
"That's Todoroki from Class 1-A pulling ahead to an early lead with a devastating display!" Present Mic said. "Amazing! He's one we should watch, it almost seems unfair! Thoughts?"
"His attack was both offensive and defensive," Aizawa explained.
"No wonder he was let in on recommendations!" Present Mic said. "He's never even fought those Robo Infernos before, but they didn't stand a chance against his chart-topping move!" More robots approached the others through the dust clouds. "The first-year students are already to one rockin' start! And, it's only the first round! Talk about a cruel obstacle course! Our players are racing against each other in a vicious battle where anything goes so long they stay on the track!"
"Watch it," Aizawa warned.
"We'll continue to bring you live updates and pulse-pounding action thanks to the camera robots placed around the course!"
"Why am I even here?" Aizawa asked.
"The stakes are high!" Present Mic said. "We've got a whole school of top-notch students trying to be heroes, but do they really stand a chance against our heavy metal swarm of Robo Inferno?"
"Hey, there's someone trapped under that robot!" someone shouted.
"Do you think we should try and help 'em?"
"Are people seriously gonna die here?" There was a gasp when Kirishima bust through one of the robots.
"I'M ALIVE!" Kirishima shouted; he had activated his Quirk.
"Kirishima from Class 1-A!" Present Mic announced. "What a hardcore debut for this rookie!"
"Todoroki, I can't believe you pulled something like that," Kirishima said, he looked back at the others. "Jeez! Anyone but me woulda been killed!"
Tetsutesu barged through the robot next to Kirishima; he was all steel. "Class 1-A really is full a'jerks! I'll smash that ice guy when I get my hands on him."
Present Mic let out a yell. "Tetsutestu from Class 1-B was also stuck underneath! What are the odds?"
"Ya know, anyone other than me woulda been killed!" Tetsutestu said.
"Are quirks are basically the same!" Kirishima cried as he charged forward. "How am I supposed to stand out now?"
"You damn copycat!" Tetsutestu shouted.
"Man, how lucky are they?" Kaminari asked. "They don't have to worry about being crushed!"
"We're racing each other!" Rin said as he put out his arm. "But we can team up for now. Let's carve a path." He activated his Quirk; with scales on his arms.
Nami started to charge forward; she made a stellar spring at her feet; and with a large stellar sword in her hands; she jumped up; then brought her sword right through the neck of the robot; making it explode.
"Takeda!" Jiro gasped.
"Takeda slicing through the obstacle!" Present Mic said. "What a comet!"
It seems she wasn't the only one from her class jumping into action.
Bakugo had used his explosions to shoot up over the robots.
"Bakugo?" Kaminari asked.
"Class 1-A's Bakugo is rocketing over the obstacles!" Present Mic said. "Clever!" He landed on the downside of a robot; he looked over to see Nami continuing with her stellar springs to get through.
"I figured you'd just try to blast your way through these things with your Quirk," Sero said. "I'm impressed." He swung over the robot with the tape from his elbows.
"I'll just hitch a ride on my shadow," Tokoyami said as Dark Shadow came out to play. "Let's land!"
"Aye, aye!" Dark Shadow responded.
"Class 1-A's learned not to hesitate," Aizawa said. "They've seen what the real world is like. They've felt the fear facing villains. Yet they fight on, trying to overcome that fear. They've grown. All of them. And they know that they have to act quickly if they want to stay alive." As Nami continued to run ahead; she heard a few explosions in the back; she then saw a new obstacle ahead; many platforms and ropes. She kept her spring quirk in action; bouncing from spot to spot; easily getting to the other side; she heard yelling from Bakugo signaling he was not far behind; and Todoroki was still in the lead.
"For those of you who thought the first obstacle was easy! Let's see how ya feel about the second one. "If they take a spill, they're out! If they wanna pass this test, they'll have to get creative. It's 'The Fall! In the world of heroes, it can be hard to get popular without a flashy Quirk. Right, Eraserhead?"
"I don't know what you're talking about, idiot," Aizawa said in annoyance.
"Looks like Todoroki is skating by easily!" Present Mic as Shoto finished using his ice to get across. "Takeda has bounced right behind him!" Nami had closed the gap a bit between her and Todoroki once they were fully on the other side; behind them, Bakugo was inching closer to them.
"You both suck!" Bakugo shouted.
"Boy, does he look foolish!" Present Mic teased. "The leaders putting distance between him and the students stuck at 'The Fall' It hasn't been announced how many competitors will make it through to the next round, so there's no time to relax!" Nami saw Shoto stop at the next obstacle. "And now, we're finally approaching the last obstacle. Everyone had better tread carefully. You're stepping onto a minefield!" Nami started to create her stellar snowboard again. "If you tread carefully, you can see where those little bombs are buried, so keep your eyes on the grounds folks! By the way, those land minds were designed by the games, so they might be loud and flashy but, they're not all that powerful. Just enough to make you wet your pants!"
"Get a hold of yourself," Aizawa ordered. Shoto gasped as Nami zoomed past him; she was crouched down grabbing the board with one hand.
"That stellar surfing certainly looks like a comet blast!" Present Mic shouted as students kept getting thrown. Nami saw that Aries was starting to appear on her wrists; the tips of her fingers were starting to disappear. So she couldn't go as fast as wanted; Shoto was right behind her.
"Stop it," Aizawa pleaded. There was a blast; Nami and Shoto looked back to see Bakugo using his explosions to go over the landmines.
"Ha, ha, ha! It's over," Bakugo declared. He let out a bigger yell and explosion; getting right next to Shoto on the other side; who had caught up to Nami. "Bastard! Your declaration of war was to the wrong person!" Bakugo attacked Shoto with an explosion. Nami and Bakugo glanced at each other and nodded; the two began to attack Shoto from both sides with explosions and stellar energy Nami engulfed on her free hand.
"Just like that a new student takes the lead!" Present Mic announced. "The media here is going crazy! There's nothing they love more than an upset! Hey, hey, hey! The rest of the competitors are catching up, too! And, what's this? Can our three leaders fight each other and stay in front of the competition? Todoroki, Takeda, and Bakugo are neck and neck for the lead and knocking on the finish line!"
'Why are these two teaming up on me? Why are they only attacking me and each other?' Shoto asked fending off the attacks while also attacking back 'Those two have never shown any sign of getting along in class since the sports festival was announced, even before that. When did Nami decide to put her differences aside and tolerate what she calls 'gremlin?' There was a huge explosion from the back causing the three in the lead to stop and look.
"What's with that huge explosion in the back?" Present Mic asked. "That was way more powerful than it should be!" Out the smoke; flying high above everyone, on a piece of a robot with Midoriya. "Incredible!" He was flying down toward the three in the front. "Whatever the case, Class 1-A's Izuku Midoriya is suddenly in hot pursuit of first place!" He flew right over them. "Strike that! That lead is his!"
"Damn!" Nami grunted as she pointed her hand and she expelled stellar energy shooting herself forward.
Bakugo used his explosion to get into the air over to Midoriya. "DEKU. What the HELL do you think you're doing, HUH?" Todoroki spread ice over the ground so he could go faster as well.
"Look at that plot twist!" Present Mic shouted. "Those three aren't fighting anymore. They're chasing Midoriya! That's what having a common enemy will do in a competition!" The three who were fighting was neck and neck again. "This fight is still far from over, though!" Midoriya was now falling; head first between Shoto and Bakugo. He grabbed the robot piece; flipped placing his feet on those two; slamming the metal piece into the ground. Another huge explosion went off shooting Midoriya forward. "In a stunning move, Midoriya has blasted past his classmates from 1-A! I don't believe it--he cleared that minefield in an instant!" Shoto, Nami, and Bakugo shot through the smoke; running and surfing to catch up to Nami.
'I need to end this soon," Nami thought to herself. 'Aries has made a full appearance." Her hands were now in 'outer space'.
"Eraser Head, your students are amazing!" Present Mic shouted. "What the heck are you teaching them?"
"This has nothing to do with me," Aizawa answered. "Each of them is powered by their own drive to succeed."
"There ya have it, Eraser Head is a terrible teacher," Present Mic announced.
"I'm what?" Aizawa demanded.
"Who would imagined at the beginning of this race that the climax would be non-stop mega-mix of surprises?" Present Mic asked. "The first to make it back into the stadium is the first place winner! Izuku Midoriya is our champion!" Shoto, Bakugo, and Nami finished in that order. As soon as Nami crossed the finished line; she deactivated her quirk and laid on her back panting.
'Can't believe I lost to Shoto again,' Nami thought to herself.
"The contestants are pouring in one after the other!" Present Mic announced. "Let's hear it for the applause for all our competitors are we prepare the results!" Everyone came pouring in; Nami watched as Hitoshi's face appeared over her; Aizawa took quick note of the interaction between those two.
"Your classmates are living up to their talk in terms of power," Shinso said.
"Good to see you on this side," Nami said with a slight smile.
"You truly have no shame laying like this one on the field," Shinso said as he squatted down. "On live television too."
"You clearly have no shame approaching me in this state on live television," Nami responded as she propped herself on her elbows, Shinso shook his head.
"When did you come up with the stellar teleportation move?" Shinso asked as he helped Nami to her feet.
"It's something I put together over the past two weeks," Nami said. "I was going to tell you eventually. How'd it go for you?"
"All that training has been paying off," Shinso answered. "I hope it's enough to get me to the end." Soon everyone had finished; they were listening to what Midnight had to say to them.
"The first game for the first years is finally over and what a game it was!" Midnight announced. "Now, let's take a quick look at the standings, shall we?" The board started to show everyone's standings
