chapter one
This is my first time writing a story centered around Cassandra so please bare with me. I am trying my best.
"Cassandra? Sweetie, its time to wake up." Cass rolled over, peeking through her eyelashes at her adoptive father, Bruce Wayne, who smiled down at her. "Come on, its time for your first day of school."
Cassandra nodded, sitting up in bed as Bruce walked out of her room. The small girl slowly slid out of bed, the light pitter patter of her feet the only noise in her room. She made her way over to her enormous closet, opening it up and stepping inside. She rummaged through the dozens upon dozens of outfits Bruce bought her, looking for her school uniform.
She finally found it and slipped it on, looking at herself in the mirror. She allowed herself a small smile as she ran a brush through her dark hair. Cassandra walked out of her room and ran into her oldest brother, Dick.
He grinned at her, a smile that held nothing but love and affection for her. Cassandra returned the gesture. "Hey, Cass! You ready for your first day of school?"
Cass nodded, following her adoptive brother down the hallway towards the stairs. She tried her best to listen to every word he said but he was very chatty for a thirteen year old boy, so she just nodded when she thought the time was right or shrugged when he asked a question.
The two of them got to the bottom of the stairs, Dick's arm shooting out to stop Cassandra from passing. She looked at him curiously as he held a finger to his lips, a gesture she knew meant to be quiet. She did as she was asked, following her brother as he crept towards the living room. They snuck inside, creeping towards the couch where they saw seven year old Tim sleeping on the couch, a computer long past drained sitting open on the coffee table.
Dick chuckled silently, sneaking up to the edge of the couch before flinging himself on top of the sleeping child. "Wake up!"
"Ahh!" Tim cried out, partly from shock and partly in pain due to the elbow now digging into his stomach. "Dick! What the heck! I expect this from Jason, but not you!"
"Hey,I take offense! I can be a jerk too, ya know." Dick pouted, getting off his brother. He turned to see Cassandra grinning at the antics of her brothers. "Come on, let's go get breakfast. Tim, remember, you need to show Cass around school today. Make sure the brutes of GA don't try and mess with her."
"I'm pretty sure Cassandra can take care of herself, but sure, I'll look after my older sister." Tim muttered.
Cassandra wasn't as good at reading vocal language but she knew Tim wasn't that happy to watch out for her.
Dick slapped the back of his head. "She may be older, but only by a few months. And still, she doesn't talk...much...so the kids at GA will instantly latch onto that and attack her." Dick lowered his voice so that Cass couldn't hear. "And I more want you to watch her to make sure the other kids are safe. We may have known her for months at this point and have been working on her social skills, but she still has a long way to go. What happens if they corner her, huh? We don't need her to go all ninja on their asses."
Tim sighed, flickering his eyes toward Cass before looking away quickly. "Yeah. Got it."
Dick pat his head before straightening up. "Good. Come on Cassandra, let's eat before we go."
Cassandra followed Dick to the dining room where ten year old Jason was setting the table with Alfred, chatting about cooking dinner that night as long as Jason gets his homework done.
"Ah, Miss Cassandra, Master Richard, you two are just in time for breakfast." Alfred smiled warmly at his charges, nothing but happiness to see them in his facial expression.
Cassandra took her seat as Alfred placed her food in front of her. She waited until everyone had been served before eating, Bruce having arrived with Tim a few seconds after Cass and Dick. They ate in relative silence, the only words being exchanged were when someone needed food or drink passed.
Soon, the family was piling into the car to be escorted to school and work. Cassandra closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths to calm her nerves as they arrived at the elementary school. She looked over at Bruce as they came to a stop, her eyes silently looking for reassurance.
Bruce pulled her into a hug, enveloping her in his arms. "Cassandra, you are going to be okay. You have your brothers. You have me. You are going to excell at school. Trust me. Everything will work out."
Cass nodded against Bruce's chest before Alfred opened the door and ushered Tim, Jason, and her out. Jason immediately took off, leaving Tim to show Cass around. He smiled down at his older sister. "Come on, Cassandra, we are in the same class. Let's go say hi to the teacher first."
Cassandra held on tightly to Tim's sleeve as they maneuvered their way through the crowded courtyard, glad she had her brother their to support her. They made it to the third story third grade classroom, slipping inside to see the teacher placing papers on the tables. Tim slipped his hand into Cassandra's and pulled her over to the teacher.
"Ms. Herd? This is my sister, Cassandra. She is new here. I told her I would introduce her to you so that she wouldn't feel as lonely here." Tim smiled at Cassandra before turning back to the young teacher. "She doesn't talk much."
"Well, Cassandra, welcome to Gotham Academy. I am sure you are going to love it here." Ms. Herd smiled at the eight year old Cassandra.
Cassandra smiled back uneasily, sensing the lie in the woman's words.
