Chapter 8

~Time skip: 2 weeks~

The duo now possessed new drivers licenses, wallets, phones, and many other necessities they may had lost along the way. Haknyeon scrolled through his phone, looking at all the data that had been salvaged from his backup on the cloud. He looked through his contacts, seeing various names.

"Mom..." he whispered, hovering over the contact. He wanted to call, but he was afraid. What if they didn't have a good relationship? What if she had updated her number ages ago? What would he even say to her? "Maybe not..."

"Maybe not what?" asked Hyunjoon, looking through his messages with friends.

"Oh, uh, was just looking at contacts, you know? Maybe get them to tell me about myself." said Haknyeon, scrolling past his mother's contact.

"I've already contacted a few people through text. They think I'm joking though... Was I a jokester before?" Hyunjoon muttered, trying his hardest to get people to take him seriously.

Haknyeon scrolled back up and once more stared at his mother's number. He quietly walked some distance away from Hyunjoon before tapping on her number. It rang and rang and rang. She picked up on the last ring.

"To what do I owe the pleasure of a phone call from my estranged son?" a gruff sounding woman asked on the other end.

"This is my mom... right?" he asked weakly.

"After all these years of silence, this is the first thing you say to me? Your father would be ashamed of you." she replied before hanging up.

Haknyeon looked at his phone screen before sighing heavily. His guess was right, they were on bad terms. He couldn't help but notice he didn't have a contact for his father. Were they worse off than he was with his mother?

"Hey! I got some info." said Hyunjoon loudly before noticing Haknyeon's mood. "Is something wrong...?"

"I'm not close with my parents... I thought they could help me..." whispered Haknyeon before letting his arms fall to his sides.

"What? You don't have their numbers? Or their address written somewhere?" pressed Hyunjoon, taking his phone. "You do have your mom's-"

"She hung up on me!" Haknyeon shouted before biting his lower lip. "She was upset... I've never been in contact with her for years..."

"Oh... I'm sorry... I just-" Hyunjoon said then watched as Haknyeon walked away from him.

He understood. The people who gave you life and raised you not being there to help you in a time of need would indeed hurt like a bitch. Was it wise to leave him alone? His grip on his phone tightened as he looked in the direction Haknyeon disappeared in. His body was already moving before his mind could've made itself up.

Haknyeon sipped on iced coffee as he sat beside Hyunjoon in a park. He looked down at his drink as it moved slightly from his own movement.

"Thanks." he muttered, keeping his eyes on the drink.

"You're ready to talk to me now huh? All it took was an iced coffee..." said Hyunjoon with a slight pout.

Haknyeon chuckled a bit before his frown returned.

"None of my friends seem to know anything too personal about me. Just basic things. I don't know what to do." said Haknyeon before taking another sip. "The only other people who were close to me were you and..."

Haknyeon's eyes widened as a light bulb went off in his mind. He grabbed Hyunjoon by the shoulders and started to shake him.

"Kevin! He has to know! We have to find him now!" Haknyeon said, completely forgetting their bigger purpose.

"Well weren't we already going to do that? I thought you wanted to gain more memories before then." said Hyunjoon.

"Forget what I said. Kevin Moon here we come!" said Haknyeon enthusiastically.

"I don't know... It's bad enough our pursuers know we're in Seoul. You can't tell me you forgot how badly they want us dead for some reason. I'm against this, rushing out without a plan." reasoned Hyunjoon, crossing his arms.

"As long as we ask the right people, we can't go wrong." said Haknyeon with a frown.

"I'm standing my ground on this matter." Hyunjoon retorted.

Haknyeon's face twisted before he let out a sigh. Hyunjoon raised an eyebrow as he rose from his spot on the bench.

"Then... I suppose this is where we part ways." he said before walking away.

"The hell you mean 'part ways'? Splitting up will just give them a better chance of capturing us!" Hyunjoon shouted, gaining the attention of passerby. Haknyeon, however, didn't stop walking. "We need each other!"

Hyunjoon silently simmered as Haknyeon didn't even bother to acknowledge his words. Was he really serious? Was learning who he was more important than closing the drug case that could affect hundreds, no, millions of people?

"Fine, be that way! When your dumb ass gets caught again, I won't come looking for you!" Hyunjoon shouted before storming off in the opposite direction.

A few officers looked at Hyunjoon before whispering amongst themselves again. Hyunjoon had come back alone. That was something rare and most cases were Haknyeon doing some secret work. They weren't sure if they wanted to approach him about it or leave him to his devices. Things always seemed to work out between them, so they opted for just keeping an eye on him.

"Putting aside Hyunjoon, anything new about the drug case they were working on and the people involved?" an officer asked in a hushed voice.

"Well, we've got dozens of new reports about people becoming dangerously ill or instant fatalities from this drug... But I can't help but wonder why Hak and Joon can't remember anything? Did they even go to the doctor?" the other officer replied.

"I think it's hard to do that if you can't remember anything." said the first officer with a weary look.

"Maybe we should look it up. Think our superiors would allow it?" the second questioned.

They quietly went on their way, seeing that a check up would probably do the duo some good in to figuring things out. Hyunjoon silently simmered as he dwelled on their past conversation. That wasn't how he wanted things to end. In fact, he didn't think things would end at all.

Why did he let him go? Why didn't he reason more? Why was Haknyeon so stubborn? He let out an audible groan before looking at his desk. Haknyeon's neighbor. He had to know something after living near him for so long. He quickly got up from his seat and hurried out, just as the two officers came back with news for him.

The door slowly opened and he was greeted by a somber face.

"You're that officer from that time... Officer Heo, Hak's sidekick right?" he questioned, looking him up and down.

"Sidekick? Never mind that, I have some questions I want to ask you about Haknyeon. Think you could answer them?" Hyunjoon asked with pleading eyes.

Taesob stepped aside and let Hyunjoon in. He sat on the floor as Taesob left to bring him a drink.

"So, what do you want to ask?" asked Taesob curiously.

"What kind of person was Haknyeon? You've lived near him for years right?" asked Hyunjoon.

"He wasn't a sociable guy, but he wasn't a workaholic either. I guess you could call him a bland guy. Oh! Don't get me started on how serious he took things. I'm telling you, never make jokes around him." said Taesob, munching on fruit. "But if there's anything I really liked about him, he was really caring. Though he was bad at showing it..."

"He sounds so different from how he is now. Now he's a crybaby, impulsive, stubborn, and pretty cheerful. I wonder if it has to do with our amnesia..." muttered Hyunjoon, taking mental notes.

"Hm, the Haknyeon I lived beside was always cool and collected. Everything he did was calculated." explained Taesob before leaving to get more fruit. "Want anything? I've got other snacks."

"Just fruit is fine." responded Hyunjoon before going back into deep thought.

Maybe Haknyeon's neighbor knew some things about him too. Haknyeon's had to have talked about him at some point. Taesob came back with more fruit and took his seat beside Hyunjoon.

"So, has Hak ever talked about me to you?" he asked, getting into a more comfortable position.

"He has, but not a lot. Like I said, he wasn't very sociable. He often complained about how you never listen to his orders. Though, he did admire how things always worked out despite you doing so. He also complained about how you were sort of like a pet, following him around." said Taesob before chuckling heartily. "Man, I always get a kick out of that. Remembering when talked about you and the thing he said."

"What did he say? Tell me." Hyunjoon pressed.

"So, I had invited him over because I had a recipe I wanted him to try. So I told him to talk about his work and for a long time he was silent. But then he started talking and it eventually got to you. And so he goes, 'My new partner is, how do you say, like a dog. He's wild, doesn't listen to orders, is messy and follows me around unnecessarily. Sometimes it's like I can see ears and tail.' Hilarious that last part." said Taesob, wiping tears from his eyes.

Hyunjoon felt his chest throb painfully. It bothered him. Too much at that. Taesob watched in confusion as Hyunjoon suddenly took off.

"Bathroom's that way." he said then watched as he took off in that direction. "Does fruit not agree with him...?"

After a while, Hyunjoon had reappeared.

"Is everything okay...? You were in there for a while." Taesob asked in a hushed tone unintentionally.

"Yeah. I think. Think I had heart burn." muttered Hyunjoon, rubbing his chest.

"Well I hope you found the aspirin. Is there anything else you want to ask?" he asked, taking a sip of his tea.

"Were you home one day when I came over to his place?" Hyunjoon asked, remembering the snow globe.

"You've come over quite a few times. You need to be specific." chuckled Taesob.

"Do you remember Haknyeon at home and very upset? And yelling at me?" Hyunjoon added, hoping it would help.

"Uh... I don't think I was home. I'm sure I would've remember Haknyeon yelling, especially since he's so cool and collected." replied Taesob with a frown.

Hyunjoon let out a sigh as he rubbed his temples. Still no leads to the whole snow globe thing. Though, he did learn a thing or two. He thanked Taesob and promised to come back when he had time. He stopped in the hall of the building as his phone started to vibrate.

"Hello?" he asked, taking the stairs down.

"Where are you? There's somewhere we want to take you. You could remember something." said a fellow officer.

Hyunjoon gave them the address then made his way down the stairs. He paused on the last step, getting an ominous feeling. He slowly backed up, wanting the feeling to go away.

"Yeah, I saw him come in but I haven't seen him come out. There's only one exit to this building, so he has to pass by me at some point. Don't worry, I'll shoot on sight." said a voice.

Hyunjoon swallowed hard as he continued to go back up the stairs. He didn't know what he was going to do. He patted himself down, taking note of everything he could use as a weapon. He wasn't keen on shooting anyone, in fear of not doing it right and getting himself killed. He quickly went up the stairs as he could hear the person walking over to the stairs.

"What's taking him so long... Maybe he's hanging out in that officer's place." the person grumbled, taking the stairs up.

Hyunjoon moved as quietly and quickly as he could up the stairs and back to Taesob's for safety. He repeatedly pressed his buzzer until he finally opened it.

"What's-" Taesob started but was cut off by Hyunjoon rushing in. "Okay..."

"They're back. Our pursuers... The ones who injured you." Hyunjoon whispered, taking cover in the bathroom.

"Well, you can stay here until they go away. Unless you can sneak past." said Taesob, going back to work.

Hyunjoon silently moved towards the front door and listened in. His heart hammered in his chest from pure nervousness. What would become of him now?
