Chapter 11

~Time skip: 1 week~

The two arrived, keeping an eye out for trouble and Kevin. They definitely didn't want a scare like last time.

"I hope we can put and end to this drug case soon. I'm not sure how much more I can stand shooting people." whined Haknyeon.

"Soon. Kevin will help us."

At least they hoped. They finally arrived at the spot. His hair could've changed since they last saw him.

"Sidekick and Virgin. It's been ages."

They turned, a grinning Kevin standing behind them. Kevin had them walk with him, making it less suspicious. Kevin started going over fond memories, Joon being completely awestruck by all of them. They sounded like the best of friends, Haknyeon and Kevin. Was he... a third wheel?

"Hey, Kev."

"Hm."

"We know that aren't on the force anymore but have you been helping us with a drug case?" Haknyeon asked.

"Sure have. How else do you think you progressed so far? You called me in tears saying how stuck you were. You never cry!" chuckled Kevin, causing Haknyeon embarrassment. "I'm joking about the tears part, but you really were frustrated. So, did anything I talk about jog memories?"

They nodded, most just being days at the precinct. Nothing vital to the case.

"Hm. Then would hearing Bakmoon he- Hak?!"

The two rushed to keep him from hitting the ground, Hyunjoon being the most worried. Memories came rushing in, making it hard for him to focus on anything.

"Hak, listen to me. Don't ever cause your Mom worry. Grow up to have a good head on your shoulders, you hear?"

"Yes, sir!"

Innocent laughter. A warm moment.

"Haknyeon?! Haknyeon?! Oh god, where are you?!"

"Mom!!!"

A frantic mother who was badly injured. So that's what his mother looked like.

"Dad! Dad!!!"

"Haknyeon, stop it!"

"But Dad...!"

Haknyeon felt tears pour out of his eyes. So his father was dead, killed in the line of duty. Now it made sense why his mother acted the way she did. A word constantly flashed in his mind: Bakmoon. On papers he's seen, inside a piece of clothing, his... his father's last message.

"Haknyeon... please..."

They held their breath, seeing Haknyeon moving. Haknyeon finally opened his eyes, seeing two worried faces. This was more than just a case. It was personal. How much did they know? He weakly sat up, still feeling pain in his head.

"Did I ever talk about family?"

Hyunjoon shook his head. Kevin looked away.

"Kevin...?"

"You've told me once, but you always remained tight lipped around Hyunjoon. Do you want him to know?" inquired Kevin.

He shook his head. If old him kept quiet about it, it was probably for good reason. He looked at his hands, seeing he gained back a lot of memories. Bakmoon wasn't the company everyone thought them to be. His father and friends were investigating them years ago but the case went cold once they were picked off. He was initially investigating alone but... Haknyeon looked at the two of them, seeing they were waiting for him to speak.

"I don't remember much but I kept some secret files somewhere. I think... with you?" he said, looking to Kevin.

"Ah. Those. I barely managed to salvage them."

Now they had worried faces. Kevin sighed, seeing he'd start at the beginning.

"Before Joon jumped on board, you were digging into this on your own. No one knew why until the name Light Rain started making headlines and were on people's lips. You found out Bakmoon was and has been making illegal drugs and selling them, promising struggling people freedom from their burdens. Of course, it doesn't agree with everyone and soon we started having deaths on our hands." Kevin explained, running a hand through his hair. "Apparently Joon jumped on board then. You were adamant on keeping him out but he wore you down. Though, I suppose it happened for a reason. You care more about the case than your own life."

So Hyunjoon was his limiter then in a sense? Even now he kept him from going overboard mostly.

"I started helping a bit before Joon joined and I didn't learn about him until... hm... a few weeks before you two idiotically planned to storm Bakmoon. And now look at you. Pitiful."

"I was just trying to put an end to this dogshit company! It's no longer just about them taking my father and his friends, it's about them taking precious people from families because of their drugs!" shouted Haknyeon.

"Oh? Sounds like my old buddy is back." smiled Kevin.

Haknyeon blinked, looking between a pleased Kevin and a somewhat terrified Hyunjoon. He took a deep breath, balling his hands into fists.

"Joon, we need to remember more. One of us has to know how we got into Bakmoon. Once we learn that we can refine the plan so we don't run into trouble like last time."

"Are you still planning to go it alone, just the two of you? Surely they'll kill you on sight." reasoned Kevin.

"I rather us than our follower officers. They have people who care for them." said Haknyeon, a piece of his real self slipping through.

Hyunjoon looked at Haknyeon before down at his lap. He didn't have anyone who cared about him? What was his history then? Was his family killed? Was he a foster child? Adopted? Orphaned? The possibilities were limitless. If only he could remember. Hyunjoon was pulled out of his thoughts by a few pats on the head.

"Don't worry, Joon. We'll get them, even if it means we resort to murder."

Murder. They got this far without killing anyone. Couldn't they go all the way? He shook his head. Bakmoon was willing to go as far as to kill to silence them. Even if it was wrong, they had a right to kill as self defense.

"Understood."

Kevin lightly chuckled behind his hand, seeing they haven't fully forgotten themselves.

"Ah, I didn't finish." he said, gaining their attention. "Bakmoon learned of me and luckily I was away when they set fire to my place. Hence why I have burn marks in random places."

"A lady at Farena was worried about you. Said you've been silent for weeks."

"Lin huh? Haven't gotten a new phone yet but tell her I'm doing okay. Well, as okay as I can be now that I'm homeless." Kevin laughed, trying to make light of it.

They weren't amused. The trio continued to talk, every so often a memory of two coming back.

"Kevin, did we ever go skiing?" Hyunjoon asked, remembering the pictures.

Kevin burst into laughter, needing a moment to calm down.

"Everyone saw how hard you two had been working and decided to send you off for some much needed off time. I went in secret to make sure you two were relaxing and not trying to be officers. Joon was more than happy for off time but you, Hak... you were so grumpy!" Kevin explained before hollering again. "You should've seen your face, ahahaha!"

Was it really that funny? Kevin talked more before his voice started to fade. He closed his eyes in attempt to focus but instead found himself staring outside a window at snow covered ground.

"Officer Ju."

He turned, seeing Hyunjoon standing next to him. It was like he was a bystander watching a scene unfold before his eyes.

"May I ask you to accompany me on a walk?"

"I'd rather not."

Hyunjoon tried again, only to be rejected yet again. Haknyeon moved to head back to his room, only to feel something hold his wrist.

"Please, Haknyeon... You've hardly stepped outside since we've been here..."

Haknyeon sighed, reluctantly agreeing. Hyunjoon smiled, letting his wrist go. They walked side by side, the sound of snow crunching beneath their feet the only sound between them.

"It's nice, isn't it? Though, it is cold." Hyunjoon started, making light conversation.

"Why? No matter what I say or do, you keep clinging to me like a fucking magnet." Haknyeon growled.

"It's simple admiration, sir."

"We both know I'm not stupid enough to believe that. You know what I'm talking about. Stop sticking your nose in shit that isn't your business."

"It is my business though." Hyunjoon replied, meeting his eyes.

Lies. He didn't press the matter, uncaring of what he could possibly say.

"I lost people dear to me because of that drug. Because of them I grew up mostly on the streets, no formal education whatsoever." started Hyunjoon, looking wistfully at the sky. "I never wondered about a future, what relying on someone was like or even what happiness was. Why concern yourself with such things when you were aware death was always near?"

Haknyeon's face had turned into one full of remorse and concern. He was terrible at comforting people and his type of encouraging wouldn't fit this situation. So he opted to doing what he's seen on TV: head pats. Hyunjoon looked at him, cheeks flushed in embarrassment.

"Ahaha... it's not everyday I get comfort like this from my senior." smiled Hyunjoon, leaning into his gesture. "I might fall in love at this rate..."

Haknyeon pulled away as a confused noise left his throat. Hyunjoon turned brighter, trying and poorly explaining his comment away. Haknyeon stopped pressing him, opting to walk again. Hyunjoon followed, silently gazing at him from behind. Haknyeon felt his chest, listening to his rapid heartbeat. What a strange occurrence.
