Chapter 10
Hyunjoon fidgeted as he waited for results. Did they find anything? Or was it all psychological? He briefly froze at the sound of the door opening.
"Well, we found faint traces of a substance residing here. It's nothing we've seen before but it shares a small similarity to a drug we've been testing on a lot which goes by the name Sunset in the streets." the doctor explained, his tone firm. "There's nothing we can say that is a definite cause of your amnesia, Officer."
His fear came true. Not even doctors could help. Would they never remember who they are?
"Though from what you've told me, you two have been remembering slowly but have stagnated. I suggest letting yourself wander and see where you end up. More likely than not, you'll end up at a place with familiar faces." suggested the doctor. "It seems you and the other officer are linked together so it'd be a heavy blow to both of you if you lose the other. Being together might help you remember quicker."
"I see..." muttered Hyunjoon, his head low.
"I know it's hard, considering your line of work. I won't make fake promises that you'll remember as a lot of people end up never remembering what they've lost. All I can do is cheer you on and give suggestions."
"Mm..."
After a bit more, Hyunjoon was let go. The two looked at him expectantly. He shook his head, their faces falling in response.
"Did they check Haknyeon? Maybe he got promising results!" Hyunjoon stated, trying to remain positive.
"They plan to once he's healed more. So for now it seems like all you can do is try to find things to jog your memory." Hyeojin concluded.
One would think the place he worked at everyday would provide him with many. Maybe they lost the timeframe in order to remember things? They turned at the sound of shouting, seeing someone being wheeled past quickly. Hyunjoon clutched his head, his brain pounding against his skull. The two officers steadied him before having him sit down.
"Move it, move it! Don't stop!"
Hyunjoon opened his eyes, seeing a moving ceiling and faint voices that sounded distant. He couldn't move. A face came into sight but disappeared as quickly as it came. His eyes closed, once more plunging him into darkness.
"Hyunjoon?! Hyunjoon?!" they called out worriedly.
Hyunjoon rubbed his head, the pain subsiding but still dull in some areas.
"I... Did someone come here on a stretcher...?" he asked, looking in the direction the doctors hurried off to.
The two exchanged looks, unsure if it was okay to tell him. Hyunjoon took note of their silence. Was it about Kevin then?
"You really can't tell us about Kevin? Not even a little?"
"It's not that it's about Kevin. Not at all. It's just..." Yoobin mumbled.
"We aren't sure if you're ready..." Hyeojin finished, giving him a worried look.
"Tell me. Haknyeon and I need any and all information we can get. We need to remember! This drug is deadly and we're the only ones who got close enough to put an end to it!" Hyunjoon said in irritation.
"Well, we've only heard about it from those who were there. Hyeojin and I weren't transferred here just yet." started Yoobin, looking to Hyeojin. Seeing her nod, he continued. "Haknyeon had gone off on his own and you were frantic in trying to find him. You were relatively new to the force and didn't know how Haknyeon usually operated. When the others got there, you were being taken away in an ambulance. So really the only ones who would know the full thing would be Haknyeon and a retired officer."
"And Kevin." Hyeojin added.
"But you said-"
"I happened to overhear Haknyeon talking on the phone and he said the name Kevin. So..." she explained, rubbing her neck. "He wasn't physically there but he probably knows the story."
Kevin. They needed to find Kevin even more now. He seemed to hold the key to further unlocking memories.

Hyunjoon sat down, seeing Haknyeon was asleep. He decided to pass the time trying to figure out which of the few unscrambled words was correct.
"Joon...?"
"Oh, you're awake! How are you feeling? Any pain?" questioned Hyunjoon, grabbing his hand. Haknyeon shook his head, sitting up to show him he was fine. "Thank goodness... So I think I figured out warehouse 7 is! The real word was scrambled into warehouse. Kind of?"
Hyunjoon showed him the possibilities. The two silently looked them over, using their minds at full capacity. Haknyeon gasped, a light bulb going off.
"Réseau 7!" he shouted, startling everyone around him.
"Réseau...? What does that mean?" asked a clueless Hyunjoon.
"It's French. I... I think I learned a little when I was younger..." Haknyeon mumbled, fragmented memories of his childhood coming back to him. "We have to find this network."
"Network? I'm still confused..."
Haknyeon started explaining it in a way he'd understand. So it was just like he said, a network. Maybe there was something at their homes that could give them a clue. Maybe at work?
"Have you visited your place yet?" asked Haknyeon, not remembering seeing anything in his room.
"No. I want to explore it with you. In case you remember something." reasoned Hyunjoon.
"Maybe I can see if I can be released sooner!"
Hyunjoon shook his head, pretty certain he still needed to be watched over. Though, Haknyeon was dead set on going with him even if he wasn't fully recovered. He if recalled correctly, he wrote down his address in his notes app. What would they find in his place? He hoped nothing embarrassing was left out.

Hyunjoon constantly looked at Haknyeon, worried his wounds would open up. What did he do to get them to agree to let him go? Naturally officers followed them to ensure their safety.
"Do you think they trashed your place too?" asked Haknyeon, worry etched on his face.
"I'd be more surprised if they haven't."
They entered the building, walking up the stairs to the third floor. Haknyeon waited as Hyunjoon hesitated by the door. He could feel nothing but dread from behind the door.
"You can't get in...?" he whispered worriedly.
"I can it's just... I'm getting really bad vibes. Maybe someone is in there...!"
Their hands instinctively moved to the guns in their holsters. Was it impending doom or something else? He finally gathered courage to open the door. Silence. They stepped further inside, taking everything in. Hyunjoon ran his fingers over a hanging photo. It wasn't anything of importance, just a typical scenic photo. That looked very familiar.
"Skiing." he randomly blurted out.
"Huh? What about skiing?" Haknyeon asked, now looking at the photo too.
"What are you talking about? Who mentioned skiing?" he asked in confusion.
"You did..."
Did he? He would've remembered saying it. He waved it off, going towards the hall where he assumed the bedroom would be. He opened a few doors, finding a closet and the bathroom. He tried the last door before pulling back. Something didn't feel right.
"Haknyeon?" he called out.
Quiet. Too quiet.
"Joon?" he finally responded.
He exhaled in relief, seeing he was worried over nothing. Haknyeon came over, taking note of his hesitance. Was someone in there? Haknyeon took hold of his free hand, startling him out of his thoughts.
"Open it." urged Haknyeon, showing he was with him.
Hyunjoon opened the door. It looked as if he had left home this morning. Untouched. Haknyeon stood by the door while Hyunjoon searched around.
"Hak?"
"It's just... is it okay for me to look around? It is your personal space." he explained.
"It's fine. We don't have memories anymore so there's no room for embarrassment. I guess?" Hyunjoon reasoned, beckoning him in.
The two searched through his belongings, hoping to find something, anything. Hyunjoon gravitated towards his bed, picking up a thick book. It wouldn't open. Brute force wasn't working. Did someone super glue it together? He closed his eyes, letting his body guide him. Click. He opened his eyes, seeing it was open.
"Hak... I think I found something big."
Haknyeon came over, looking at what he pulled out. Réseau 7. Hyunjoon looked over the other things while Haknyeon input the link into a search engine. Hyunjoon tilted his head, wondering what he was doing with an old train ticket. Quite a few now that he looked.
"A note..." he thought, opening it up. "'Haknyeon, we've done a lot together and I seriously admire you and your work ethic. Even if it's questionable at times. So, I was hoping if you'd go see this show with me? You look a little stressed these days. I know we're on a case but... Please? - Joon'. Is this...?"
Then in the memory...
"Joon, is there a password in there? I think I've got the ID." asked Haknyeon, bringing him back to reality.
"It just says 'precious to us'."
Another roadblock. Just when they thought they could catch a break. Just when their key was within reach...
"The others wouldn't know. You weren't very sociable. Plus we have no memories of anything. Is this as far as we go...?" Haknyeon thought aloud, despair enveloping him.
"There's got to be something. This can't be the end."
They started searching the entire apartment. Hyunjoon stopped by the scenic photo, the wave of familiarity coming back. He lifted it off the wall, turning it around.
"Hm...?"
He could open the back. Two photos fell out. He picked up both, one being the scenic. The other... people? He could recognize himself and Haknyeon but the one on the right... Then it came to him. It was the same guy in Haknyeon's photo in his room. But why was this hidden? He turned it over, seeing words and numbers scribbled on the back.
"Haknyeon! Kevin! It's Kevin!" he exclaimed, frantically turning it from front to back. "And I think I found the password!"
Haknyeon was shown the photo, putting face to name. Nothing. Not even a tiny bit of memory. He shook it off, inputting the supposed password. It was denied.
"This isn't precious to us huh... Maybe something within?" Haknyeon reasoned.
Hyunjoon looked carefully. Haknyeon eventually let out a gasp, typing on his phone again.
"It opened... Oh my god, we did it Joon!" Haknyeon squeaked, giving Hyunjoon a hug.
"What was it?"
"It seemed to be a date for something. I think it had to do with the other photo. I don't know what exactly..."
"Skiing..."
Haknyeon shifted, showing Hyunjoon the screen. He made the obvious choice, selecting contact. There were quite a few names on the list. None said Kevin. A nickname perhaps?
"I'll keep looking around while you figure this out."
Haknyeon nodded, trying to decide. Judging from what they knew of Kevin and themselves, a few options were eliminated.
"Maybe... Music..."
It started a call. It rang. Would someone actually pick up?
"Hello."
He was paralyzed. The voice was unfamiliar yet he felt calm, like this voice could comfort him if needed.
"Kevin...?"
"You sound very unsure of yourself, Virgin."
Virgin? Who was that? He looked to Hyunjoon who was focused on exploring.
"No retort? Joon's making you lose your edge huh? Kid's got some hold on you."
"Kevin, we're in a real bind! We... wait. Are you really Kevin?"
"You ask that yet you called my number. You're acting weird. Are you Haknyeon?"
It was a gamble from here.
"Kevin, we need your help. Joon and I... we have no memories! We've been slowly remembering things as we went along but nothing new has come." explained Haknyeon, not leaving out any details. "And here we are now."
It was quiet on the other end.
"I hope you're both ready for what I plan to drop on you." said Kevin before giving him a place to meet him at.
Hyunjoon came back from exploring.
"Joon, we're finally getting our memories back." smiled Haknyeon. "It's finally happening!"
The two cheered until the sound of a gunshot rang out.
