Heavy is the head that wears this crown; and in Jude's case, the crown is the name Monroe.

You're a Monroe. You can handle it.

By the time Jude was five, she had already grown sick of hearing that name. She supposes she should be grateful—and of course, for the most part she is. Wearing a name like Monroe comes with a lot of perks. And to explain why the name holds so much power, it's probably best to go back to the beginning.

When Hawkins was first being settled in Indiana, the Monroe family was one of the first to come through. They opened up the first bank in the city—aptly named Hawkins Bank, and from there, the family's notoriety never stopped growing. As of 1984, they're considered to be the one of the most—if not the most influential family in the city. On top of the bank, they now own dozens of properties all over Hawkins and neighboring cities, as well as several other investments. They've gone from being just another rich family to being the most well known family in the city.

William "Bill" Monroe, A.K.A. Jude's father, is the current head of the household, and oversees all of the family's assets. Everyone in town knows Bill Monroe—if he were to run for mayor, there wouldn't be any competition. But luckily for Larry Kline, Bill's never showed any interest in politics. His focus has always been on his family business.

In his sophomore year of college, Bill and Lillian (the woman who would later become his wife), started going out. And after only a few months of dating, they were married, and it wasn't long after that when their first child and only daughter, Judith Alisa Monroe was born. Rumors of the union being a shotgun wedding and of Lillian being a gold digger that baby trapped Bill floated around, but they eventually dissipated.

Although Lillian's present behavior doesn't do much to deter the past accusations on her character. Lillian has never cared for being a family woman. Her children have mostly been raised by help or themselves, while she's spent the last seventeen years expanding her purse collection and building up a name for herself at the country club. But just because she doesn't spend a lot of time with her children doesn't make her a bad mom... right?

Despite Jude being Bill's eldest child, the idea of her taking over the family business isn't one that's ever been taken seriously. Which is why when her younger brother, Quinton William Monroe was born, it was a huge relief to the family. Because in what world was a girl fit to run a company? So, the pressure of being the next Monroe heir falls onto Quinton the second he emerges from his mothers womb. There's a lot expected of the youngest son, but at least Bill has the decency to let Quinton be a kid before it's time for him to get serious.

Which brings us back to Jude. The day she was born—November 18th, in the good year of 1966–it is said to be the day that god gifted an angel unto the Earth. Well okay, it's really only Jude's classmates that say that when they're joking around, but sometimes she's convinced they really feel that way! People have always treated her like she's this benevolent, perfect, untouchable being who can do no wrong.

So, that is the person Jude has always believed she has to be.

There was only one person—aside from maybe her little brother—that Jude felt saw her for who she really is. But like most things under pressure, their friendship ended in a fiery explosion, and since then, Jude has always felt... alone.

She's just thankful Quinton isn't alone. There was a scare, in the year prior, when he best friend Will Byers went missing, but then he came home, and all seems to be well. For now, at least.

Things start to take a turn for the worse after Halloween of 1983, and Quinton strays from home to help look after Will who's started to have episodes. Jude's completely oblivious to everything that transpired the year before—to the Demogorgon, the Upside Down, and the secrets of Hawkins Lab... And Quinton intends to keep it that way, especially after the rough year Jude had before.

However, while she's trying to track down her little brother's whereabouts, Jude ends up at Dustin Henderson's house. To say she's surprised when she finds not only are they searching for an escaped "pollywog" that apparently ate Dustin's cat, but her old friend, Steve Harrington, is there helping him.

Now, Jude finds herself untangling a twisted web of secrets spun not only by their own government, but maybe by her father as well. Then there's a whole other thread she's trying to untangle—the one that keeps her tied to Steve Harrington.
