twenty nine.
twenty nine.
The cool Chicago air blew around the park. Birds chirped in the trees and cars beeped in the street traffic. The green field in the park was full of people. A block party was occurring with a cover band playing music and people scattered all around. Smiling, talking, and laughing filled the air. It was a nice day to get some fresh air considering all the civilians walking along the trails.
Pru had slowed down jogging to take a breather. Taking a chug from her water bottle as she looked at all the happy people. As the girl turned to take in more of the view, her eyes landed on a family face. Smiling, the girl approached the nanny with the little boy on his three-wheeled scooter.
"Hey, Liz." Pru greeted before bending down to level with the little boy.
"Hi, Owen." Pru smiled as the younger boy giggled. Leaving his scooter to run into Pru's arms as she hugged him.
"I see you're taking a little route on your scooter. Can you do any tricks yet?" Pru asked Owen who shook his head.
"No." His lightly volumed voice responded.
"No?! Well, one day you'll be able to. And you'll be even cooler than you are now." Pru's told him as she tickled his sides. He erupted in a fit of giggles as he squirmed around.
"Hey, Pru. Do you have a phone? I left mine at Natalie's place." Liz asked Pru. The girl pulled her phone out of her pocket, clicking on her screen to be met with nothing. Clicking the lock button a few times repeated but it was still no use.
"Liz, I'm sorry. I didn't charge it before I went on the run." Pru apologized.
"It's alright, we'll just have to head back early." Liz said as Owen, frowned.
"No." He yelled in protest as he stomped his foot down and crossed his arms. The action made Pru laugh at the child.
"Liz, you can head back to get it. I can watch Owen." Pru told the nanny.
"Are you sure?" Liz questioned.
"Yeah, I can take Owen back after." Pru replied as screams erupted in the distance. Gaining their attention as people started to run and gun shots began to rain. Pru engulfed Owen and grabbed Liz's hand. Pulling them away with her in the opposite direction. Finding a hiding place. They sat and waited, praying everything would be alright. Pru covered Owen's ears from the sound of gun shots as she quietly shushed him.

In the hospital it was filled with chaos. Victims piling up from the shooting. Natalie was going mad not being able to get ahold of Owen's nanny. So many people were in the park. And Owen could've been there with Liz.
Jay Halstead had brought two undercover cops with him as he made his trip into the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Talking to Sharon Goodwin before having the cops start looking for the potential shooter. Jay kept checking his phone incase Pru contacted him or if anyone heard from Pru. She had the day off but she hadn't been picking up any of their calls. And Hailey began to worry because she thought Pru might have gone for her run through the park and now no one could get ahold of her. Natalie Manning ran to stop Jay in slight worry for her son.
"Hey, Jay, uh, my son, Owen, he and the nanny may have been in Millenium Park today, but I can't reach them. Can you—."
"Every cop in the city is looking for the shooter. I'm so sorry Nat. We can't even get ahold of Pru right now either. All of the stations are swamped right now like the hospitals. If we had more people available then I would be helping search. But right now, we gotta hope that they're safe." Jay cut Natalie off. Apologizing before walking away.

"Excuse me. I'm an officer with District 21, Intelligence unit. Could I get a phone or something? Even a phone charger?" Pru asked ad she stood in the lobby of another police station. Wishing her workplace would've been a closer choice. Liz and Owen sat on the bench against the wall. Pru had explained what they had experienced but she didn't get a look of who the shooter was so she was of no help.
In that moment her main priority was getting Owen and Liz to safety. She didn't regret helping them but she regretted not being able to help more people. There Pru was now, stuck sitting around and becoming irritated with the officers. They all kept walking past her like she was invisible.
"Excuse me?" Pru walked up to a passing officer.
"May I use a phone?" Pru questioned.
"Sorry, Ma'am. All our lines are full right now. And we'll have a police car escort you to where you need to be when one is available." The officer told her while Pru huffed in annoyance. Owen began to cry in his spot as Pru bent down to pick him up. Comforting the little boy to get him to calm down, rubbing his back.
"It's going to be okay."

"Will, thank god!" Pru exclaimed as she greeted the doctor who walked into the station, looking around for the girl. Once his eyes fell onto her, he made his way over as she hugged him in relief.
"Hey, are you alright?" Will questioned.
"Yeah. I just got Owen to take a nap on the bench. None of us were hurt. I heard the gun shots and I didn't think twice. I grabbed Owen and Liz then ran for cover." Pru began to explain.
"My cell died and when I was finally given a phone, no one was picking up." Pru told him.
"Natalie has been scared all day. Worried about Owen and him possibly being in the park. Then I overhead when she was talking to Jay that no one could reach you. So when I saw an unknown number I hoped for the best." Will said as Pru smiled, exhausted.
"Let me take Liz home then we can go to the hospital." Will came up with the plan before they headed out to leave.

Will helped Owen out of the car as Pru also exited. Will had texted Natalie to go outside. The doctor ran outside in search for the trio as she yelled for her son who instantly ran to her. The mother embraced her son as Will and Pru made their way over to them.
"How?" Natalie asked with tears in her eyes.
"Well, I was the lucky one to answer Pru's call. Pru ran into Owen and Liz in the park and she helped them when the gunfire began. They were stuck at one of the stations for awhile." Will explained to Natalie as she looked at Pru, thankful for the girl.
"Thank you so much for making sure Owen was safe." Natalie hugged Pru who nodded her head. Then Natalie let go and let Will embrace her. Pru looked at them before she headed off into the hospital in hopes to find a certain person still around.
"Pru are you okay? I heard that they couldn't find you." Connor let out as he embraced the girl.
"Yeah, I'm alright. I got out of there. I can't believe all of these people were hurt." Pru said as she looked around.
"Dr. Rhodes, we need you up in the OR." Noah Sexton interrupted.
"Go." Pru pushed Connor away to get back to work. Pru looked around more but couldn't find who she was in search for. She made her way back outside in defeat. Ready to find a way home and call it a day. The girl looked up from the ground as her brown eyes locked with a familiar set of blueish-green ones. Pru sighed out in exhaustion and relief as Jay instantly made his way towards her. Embracing the girl as she let her head fall onto his chest. Breathing in his signature cologne, which calmed her down. She had a long day and was happy to see Jay.
"Lets get you home." Jay spoke up as she nodded. His arm wrapped around her shoulders as the two headed to his truck.
