Wishful Thinking

A few days had passed. Jessica felt as if she was losing her mind. She had so many thoughts swimming through her head. She had an urge to just pick up and leave New York. She didn't know where she'd go or what she'd do. After Danny she needed to get away and not come back. In reality she knew it was crazy thinking. She had her family, her job, and deep down she loved New York. She was just antsy to go somewhere. Work was hectic. She was working non stop with Heather trying to mend the department. Jessica didn't talk about leaving any more because she knew that what she had said to Heather was something that just popped out, she didn't really mean it. It was all wishful thinking.

On top off all the crazy thoughts and feelings Jessica was going through, she was still sick. She started eating again, thinking maybe her body needed to become stronger. When she'd break down, she'd try to find ways to not over work herself. But the fatigue was still there, and the vomiting. Jessica just felt so weak.

One morning on a Saturday Jessica hadn't slept at all that night. She had this terrible feeling, a feeling that scared the death out of her. This feeling... or maybe this thought... had been on her mind ever since she got back to New York and Sarah had called her. Jessica has been trying to put it in the back of her mind but it always seems to pop back up again. The way she had been feeling wasn't starting to feel like a stomach bug. This 'sickness' was starting to become much too familiar.

Jessica laid in bed, curled up holding her stomach that was in knots. She closed her eyes and began to cry. The pains, tiredness, and nausea that Jessica had been feeling brought her back to a specific day that Jessica will never forget... this day was a week before her father had died.

May 2010-

It was early in the morning. Jessica was woken up by the sound of her fathers night nurse leaving the house. When she had closed the door it had echoed throughout the house, causing everything to rattle.

She slowly opened her eyes and stretched. But, right as she stretched she got a terrible pain in her stomach. She hoped out of bed and ran to the bathroom.

Her younger brother George was just about to go in but she shoved him out of the way.

"Move!" She yells, slamming the bathroom door.

George bangs on it. "Hey! I shower in the morning, get out!" He yells

Dorthy comes running into the hallway to see what was going on.

"George, quite! Your father is finally getting some rest. He had a long night." She says sternly

"But Mom, Jessica took the bathroom."

Then, they hear her getting sick. This wasn't the first time in the last few days.

George immediately gets grossed out. He plugs his ears and closes his eyes.

"Never mind, I don't want it!"

Dorthy rolls her eyes. "George, just use my shower. Leave Jessica alone, she sounds sick."

George runs away and Dorthy puts her ear to the door. Jessica was still sick.

"Darling, it's Mom. Can you open the door?"

Jessica refused to let Dorthy in. She was in tears. Afraid that maybe she wasn't sick.

"I'm okay... really, I just- I ate something." She bluffs, trying to hold it in.

"Honey, you've been sick for a few days now... just let me in so I can take your temperature."

"No, I'm fine!" She hisses

Dorthy backs off and walks away.

After an hour Jessica's stomach had calmed down. She had an uneasy feeling all morning. Jessica didn't feel like she was sick... it scared her. She wanted to tell her mother that something may be going on, but her mother had lots to juggle with her father being so sick.

She came down for breakfast. Dorthy made eggs and bacon for Jessica and George. The three of them sat in the kitchen while Albert slept.

It was strange not having Albert at the breakfast table. He had been declining, quickly, over the last month. Everyone knew his time was coming, but they didn't know when. They just tried to enjoy every moment with him and be happy. But when he wasn't around they were sad.

"Are you feeling better, Jessica?" Her mother asks

Jessica nods her head slightly. "I think I'm just out of wack. That's all."

"Aren't we all." Her mother says with sadness

Jessica clears her throat and nods

"Oh, I forgot to ask. Do you mind stopping over at Ann's? Baby Quinn Left his lovey here. I haven't had a chance to stop by and give it to her."

"Yeah, of course."

"When is Ann having the baby again?" George asks

Ann was pregnant with her second child. It was a girl.

"Some time in August." Dorthy says

"I'm going to go say bye to Dad then leave. I'll see you all later." Jessica says standing up

"Alright, drive safe."

Jessica goes upstairs and slowly walks into her parents bedroom. Her father laid their, silently on the bed. Ever since he got sick he wasn't himself. His life was taken from him, and it was frustrating. But whenever he was around his children it always cheered him up.

His pale face looked at Jessica while she stood at the doorway.

"Jessie, good morning." He says softly

Jessica walks over to her father and gives him a long hug. She took in his embrace.

"Hey daddy."

"Heading out?" He says looking at her lanyard that was wrapped around her neck.

"I have to go to Ann's and return Quinn's lovey." She says

"Thanks for helping out your mother, hun."

"Of course... do you want anything while I'm out?"

"No, I'm okay..." He says

"Not even handles ice cream?" She smirks

He shakes his head and takes her hand. "Jess..."

She stops. She didn't want her make her father upset. He had lost his appetite long ago.

She puts her head down.

"Your mother told me you were sick. Are you okay now?"

"I'll be fine..."

He holds her hand tightly and then kisses it.

"Go on and give Quinn his lovey. I'll see soon." He says as his eyes grow heavy.

"Okay, Dad. Rest up. Maybe we can walk around the neighborhood later."

He sighs "oh jessie, not today..."

On the way over to Ann's she couldn't stop thinking about the constant vomiting and changes in her body... she also couldn't get her dying father off her mind. She had so much going on, so many emotions. The last thing she needed was to worry about a pregnancy.

"Ah-ha! Thank you so much for stopping by. Quinn can't sleep without it!" She says with exhaustion

Jessica smiles and walks in.

"Where is He now?"

"Jimmy took him for a ride in the Jeep. Mom needed a break." Ann says rubbing her belly

Jessica looks at her pregnant sister, then down at her own stomach.

"Ann, how did you know you were pregnant? Like what kind of symptoms did you have?"

"Well, I was pretty tired. Oh, morning sickness! And my boobs, they hurt so bad. But everyone is different. Why?"

Jessica was quite for a moment. "It's for health. We're learning about pregnant people."

Ann chuckles

"Can I use the restroom real fast?"

"Sure!"

Jessica excuses herself and goes into the bathroom. She locks the door.

When she realizes there isn't toilet paper she opens the cabinet and pulls a roll out. Behind that roll was a box of clear blue pregnancy tests.

Jessica gave the box a a glare. She closed the cabinet, sat there for a moment, then decided to pull out the box. She opened up test. She shoved the wrapping in her purse so Ann wouldn't find it.

Her hands began to shake...

Moments later she flips it over.

Pregnant

Jessica didn't want to believe it. She didn't want to think there was a possibility she was pregnant. But all the symptoms were adding up. It was just like before. This kind of sickness she was experiencing was a sickness she had experienced one time and one time only. Her mind told her no, but her body told her yes. She thought of the possibilities. Jessica was never good at keeping up with the pill. Yet her and Danny used protection. Maybe it wasn't always safe...

Her heart began to race. She couldn't stop crying. She never wanted children, she doesn't want them now, she doesn't want them later. After her miscarriage she told herself she'd never get pregnant. She was afraid and also didn't think she was cut out to be a mother.

Jessica couldn't stand waiting another minute. She grabbed her coat and slid on her shoes. She didn't really care what she looked like when leaving the apartment.

She ran out of the lobby and across the street. Luckily there was a CVS a block away.

She ran inside. She was a wreck. People stared, but she didn't care.

She went into the aisle where the test were. She found a box that looked just like the box she had found at Ann's the first time she took a test.

She checks out. She couldn't wait another moment. Instead of going to the apartment she goes to the back of the store to use the restroom. She locks herself inside then opens four test.

She used each one then lays them out on the ledge of the sink.

Now, she waits.

She paces around the small bathroom. Tears kept rolling from her eyes. Her hands trembled, she tapped her finger on her chin, grabbed her hair, and prayed that it would be negative. She can't be pregnant. She doesn't want to be pregnant. She doesn't want a child. Especially now that the father is no longer alive.

Then, minutes passed.

Jessica looked at each test. When she saw the results she broke down into tears. Her loud sobs could be hear from outside of the stall.

Jessica grabbed her phone and called her mother.

"Hello?" She answers

Dorthy could hear Jessica's heavy breathing and her crying through the phone.

"Mom!" She cries loudly

"Jessica, baby, are you okay?" She says nervously

"No!" She yells. Her breathing becomes heavy. She couldn't talk without crying or catching a breath.

"Honey, relax... what is wrong?" She asks

"Mom, I'm pregnant!"

Surprise... kinda!

I've been trying to avoid pregnancy in my stories... but, I couldn't in this one.
Comment what you think Jessica should do.
