CHAPTER TWO

AFTER CLUMSILY RUSHING out of her brother's red car, Mary ran up the brick steps of her house as fast as her converse could carry her. She flew straight through the door, and up to her room to get the 'backpack of wonders' from underneath her full-sized bed. Her and Beverly always called it that, because the young brunette always brought it everywhere the two went. It was always a mystery of what it carried inside.

Mary's mind ran wild with all the possibilities her and Beverly Marsh could do that Friday afternoon. The red-headed girl was on her way over to her best friend's house that very second.

"Mary! Are you home?" Natalie Harrington called up the steps of their rather large home.

Mary zipped up her bag, slung it over her shoulder, and ran towards the wooden stairs. "Yes, mom. But Beverly and I are going to ride around town for a while."

"Okay, sweetheart. Be back before dark, and please keep the walkie talkie on at all times." Her mother added while pointing at the large gray machines that sat on the kitchen table.

Almost instantly, Mary rushed to the table and grabbed the walkie talkie that sat to the right. "Almost forgot. I'll see you later, mom." The young girl then walked up to her mom and gave her a large bear hug. Natalie smiled at her daughter's gesture.

As soon as the two had pulled apart, Mary was racing through the door, and to the side of her house where her navy bike laid perched up against the wood. She grasped it by the handlebars, and rolled it to the sidewalk out front of her home. At that second, Beverly Marsh rolled up in her maroon tank top and jean shorts.

"Hey, Bev." Mary smiled as she adjusted the sleeves of the backpack strapped around her shoulders.

Beverly muttered a hello back, and the two girls were off. They rolled through the town on their bikes with smiles plastered on their faces. It was the first official day of summer vacation; the first day of freedom for three entire months away from school.

"HEY, MARY!" BEVERLY called out from behind the brunette girl. Immediately, she slowed her speed to hear what her best friend had to say. "Have you ever used a tampon?"

Mary was so taken back by the sudden question that she almost stopped her bike completely. "Twice, yes. Why do you ask?"

"Not sure. I think I might want to start wearing them." The red-headed girl proclaimed. Mary couldn't keep the little giggles from coming out of her mouth. "Don't laugh at me!"

After controlling her laughter, Mary spoke up, "How about we go to the store and get some?"

"Sounds like a plan, man." Beverly replied, causing her best friend to roll her eyes with another giggle.

The two then set off towards the local general store that held all the needs that anybody could have.

Upon their arrival, the two girls parked their bikes in the front of the small building. They then headed inside in search of the lady products isle. "I don't think I've ever come here to get tampons. I just steal my mom's." Mary commented as her eyes scanned each sign that hung about the rows.

Beverly let out a snicker before trailing down the isle they were looking for. Mary followed suit. "Which do you recommend?" The red-headed girl asked.

Mary pondered for a second. "I recommend Tampax, I guess."

Nodding her head, Beverly grabbed the bag of tampons that her best friend suggested. The two then walked out of the isle towards Mr.Keene, but immediately stopped when seeing none other than Greta Bowie walking towards them.

"Go, go!" Mary whispered while pushing her friend to the row directly beside the one they were currently in. Though that one had people that neither expected to see, as well.

Bill Denbrough, Stanley Uris and Eddie Kasbrak stood there with dumbfounded looks on their faces as they stared back at the two girls. Upon seeing them, Beverly gasped and hid the tampons behind her back out of embarrassment.

A small stare off occurred until Bill spoke up, "Y-You guys okay?" Mary and Beverly shared a knowing look before turning back and nodded their heads frantically.

"We're fine," Beverly covered for them. "What's wrong with you?"

The three boys glanced at eachother before Stanley spoke up, "None of your busin-." He started.

"New kid outside looks like someone killed him." Eddie said, cutting his friend off mid sentence.

Mary and Beverly shared a confused look before turning back to the boys upon hearing Bill's distressed voice. "We need s-s-supplies, but we don't have enough money."

"Don't worry about that." Mary spoke as she walked towards the boys. Beverley immediately got the hint and followed closely behind. "We got it covered."

The three apart of the losers club shared confused looks as they watched Mary grab the objects from Eddie's possession. Beverly continued walking all the way towards the back of the store, in the direction of Mr.Keene.

"W-What are you going to d-do?" Bill asked.

Mary pressed her pointed finger to her lips to signal to stay quiet. They all immediately got the memo, and watched her slowly put each item in her backpack one at a time.

All of them watched Beverly as she took Mr.Keene's glasses and placed them over her eyes. He gave her a seductive smile, which made Mary want to puke.

A few seconds had passed before Mary was walking up to the boys and whispered, "I'll meet you outside."

They obliged and almost instantly started rushing out the doors, but not before knocking over a few stands in the process. Mary face palmed as she watched them walk out.

As if on que, a loud bang erupted from behind Mary; she whipped her head around. Beverly stood in front of the counter, ushering her best friend out as she tucked a pack of cigarettes into her back pocket.

Mary nodded her and dashed out of the small convenient store. In her daze, Mary nearly ran into the three boys she was with just minutes prior. "Woah!" Eddie called out as she grabbed onto Bill to steady herself.

"Sorry." Mary muttered as she regained her balance. Without wasting anymore time, she grabbed the backpack from her bag and collected the items she was given. "Here. Just remember to apply pressure to the wound." She instructed while handing the objects over.

The three boys grabbed them and rushed off to the wounded boy in the alleyway. The sound of Beverly's voice was heard from behind Mary before she could react, "That guy is such a pervert."

"Oh my god tell me about it!" Mary laughed. The two girls then began to engage in a conversation about all the other times they had preformed their little 'magic trick' as they walked to where the Loser's Club was located.

Before they could turn down the alleyway, Bill approached the two girls. "Um, t-thanks. This is all we have." Mary glanced down at his hand to see a few crumpled up dollar bills.

"Even Steven." Beverly replied while holding up her packet of cigarette and throwing him a wink. Frantic, scared voices from down in the alleyway caught the three of their's attention. "Ben from Soc?" The ginger muttered. Mary shot her a weird look as she watched the girl walk down towards the commotion.

"What's going on with him?" Mary asked the boy who was still beside her.

Bill's eyes widened slightly as he glanced at her. "B-Bowers." He mumbled as he stared at the wondrous girl that stood beside him. With a scoff, Mary threw her head back once she got the message.

"Of course it was." She mumbled under her breath before stalking towards the other teenagers.

As Mary stopped, Richie was proclaiming something to those who stood around him. "It's the truth!" He finished while looking at Eddie who was hunched over Ben Hanscom's bloodied shirt.

"You sure they got 'the right stuff' to fix you up?" Beverly asked the injured boy with a smirk on her face.

Mary furrowed her eyebrows at her best friend. "Did you just reference New Kids on the Block?"

"You know w-we'll take care of him." Bill spoke up from in between the two girls. "Thank again, you guys."

Mary smiled at the boy, "It was no problem. Don't sweat it."

"Maybe we'll see you guys around." Beverly added before going to turn around in the direction of their parked bikes.

Bill's sudden hand on Mary's sleeve to prevent her from moving, shocked everyone around them. "W-We were maybe thinking a-about going to the q-q-quarry tomorrow. If you wanna. . ."

"Come?" Mary asked as she glanced down at his hand that was still grasping onto her army green shirt. "We'll be there."

And then the two girls were off towards their next adventure.
