CHAPTER THREE

MARY PEDALED HARD, and fast down the twisted roadways of Derry. She had parted from Beverly shortly after leaving the Loser's Club in the alleyway. The two girls returned to Beverly's home, but she refused to allow Mary inside because her father was home. Without putting up a fight, Mary left for her own home.

The sky has turned a crimson color as the brunette turned down the infamous Neibolt street. Taking one hand off the steering wheel, she reached back and tightened the straps on the black backpack wrapped around her shoulders. It was a motion of protecting herself and the items in the bag.

It didn't take long to reach the black house marked number twenty-nine. The last house on the right. The scariest house on the block. Its negative aura seemed to cascade onto Mary as she slowly biked past, her eyes never leaving the rickety building. She knew something was about to happen when the upper right window seemed to wink at her.

Pure fear coerced through her body when a low, deep bark was heard from behind her. Slowly, Mary turned around to see a black, almost wolf-like, dog snarling at her. It was hunched over like a lion about to pounce on a gazelle. Its teeth were bared, and its eyes were clouded with the desire for food.

Mary wasted no time in turning back around, and pedaling as fast as she could the hell away from her current situation. Though with every move Mary made, the rabid dog seemed to be one step ahead. It didn't take long for the wild animal to grab ahold of her backpack with its teeth. In one swift motion, Mary was sent flying to the floor.

She hesitantly looked up with tears filling her eyes, only to see the dog approaching her very slowly. Her vision had become hazy as she got to her feet and raced like a jet. Sadly, the beast was just a little bit faster. Once it caught up to Mary, the animal sunk its teeth in her calf and yanked the poor girl back. Mary screaming out in pain as she fell onto the pavement with a loud thud.

Expecting for the beast to come back, Mary tried to push herself up with her cut-up, blood-stained hands. She turned around, waiting for the animal to be right there gnawing on her leg. Except, it was gone. It was as if it was never there in the first place. Her right calf still had gashes all over it, but the perpetrator was missing from the picture.

Mary yelped out in agony as the pain from her wounds finally presented themselves. "Hiya, Mary!" A voice beside her called out. The brunette's thoughts left her injuries as she directed her attention to the unidentified person. Mary was shocked to see a clown. His white outfit with red buttons was drenched in blood. His menacing grin dripped with the red liquid. His right hand was holding onto the strings of balloons, and the left was waving back and forth at the young girl.

Mary's body filled with panic as she jumped to her feet and raced for her bike. As she clobbered onto it, a loud popping sound was heard beside her. Mary's eyes looked back to where the clown previously stood, but there was nothing. Not a trace of blood was there.

Mary Harrington wasted no time in pedaling away towards her home.

MARY THREW HER navy bike down outside the small white fence that opened up her front yard. She limped as fast as she could to the wooden front door, and began to bang on it with her fist.

Andrew was sitting on the brown couch in the living room when he heard the constant pounding on the door. With furrowed eyebrows, he put his book to the side and walked to the window to the right of the door. Once seeing his distressed younger sister, he immediately pried it open and took her into his arms. "Mary?" He called out in a surprised and concerned tone.

"Oh Drew." She cried. "A d-dog attacked me! It tore up my leg!" Mary gripped his shirt for balance as she lifted the injured leg off the ground. When she looked up to see her brother's reaction, his face carried a perplexed look. "It was so scary." Mary continued. "I t-thought I was going to die!" She was crying so hard that she could barely get her words out.

Andrew knelt down on the floor to better inspect the wounds. "Mary, are you alright?" He asked in a concerned tone.

"No! It hurts to bad!" Mary yelped out as he pressed a finger to the open bite mark. Blood was beginning to run down her leg and onto her white sock.

Andrew stood up straight again and put the back of his hand against his sister's forehead. "You're not sick..." He muttered before grasping both side of her cheeks to inspect her eyes. "Your eyes aren't bloodshot... Are you sure you're okay?"

"Andrew, what the hell? I have a bite mark ripping through my calf!"

The older Harrington sibling sighed. "Mary. I don't see anything. There's no cut. There's no bite mark. Nothing."

Mary's face fell. "What?" She breathed. Mary knew she didn't dream up the whole dog attacking her. It was too crazy to make up. "What do you mean you can't see it? It's right in front of your eyes!" She cried out while pointing at the deep cuts on her leg. "How do you not see it?" She screamed. Mary was full on bawling as she tried desperately to get her brother to see what had happened. Mary couldn't wrap her head around the fact that only she could see the wounds on her leg.

"Let's go get some rest, yeah? We can tell mom and dad at dinner tonight."

Mary nodded her head with a defeated look on her face as she limped up the stairs. She somehow knew her parents wouldn't believe her either.
