Chapter 129
"Alright Curtis, what do you have for us?" Oliver asked as Team Arrow gathered in the mission hub of the Nexus to see what Curtis had found.
"Well, since you got us that address from the Bratva, really proud of the work Luke and I did to bury your connection to them for your mayoral race by the way, I used my T-sphere drones, the Queen Consolidated Satellite and thanks to you Oliver, the Justice League's network to run recon on the warehouse." Curtis said.
"So, what do you have?" Rene was the one who asked what they were all thinking.
"Well, good news is this is definitely the place. According to all scans, this is where Count Vertigo's Vertigo lab is." Curtis said.
"Saying good news implies that there's also bad news." John said.
"Yeah, according to my scans, Vertigo isn't the only product the Count is moving." Curtis said.
"So what else is it? Slam, Greenlight, Stardust?" Oliver asked.
"No, it's this." Curtis said as he moved one of his t sphere drones he still had in the warehouse to show cages.
"Are those people in the cages?" Laurel asked in horror.
"Not just people, kids. If I had to guess, the Count is one of the many metahuman traffickers that have been popping up. Abducting kids off the street, subjecting them to potentially lethal experiments to activate their metagenes and then selling them on the black market, it's disgusting." Oliver said.
"Why doesn't the League shut it down?" Yolanda asked.
"We're trying, but it's tricky. Every time we take down one of these syndicates, another one pops up in its place and it doesn't help that we don't get a whole lot of support from governments beyond Atlantis and Hephaestia." Oliver said.
"What do you mean?" Thea asked.
"Metahumans don't have the same legal rights as humans or even aliens do under President Marsdin's alien amnesty act and I doubt any government in the world is going to change that since it takes away their ability to create super soldiers. The League is pretty much on its own, despite our attempts to raise awareness against it." Laurel admitted.
"Wow, just when I think the legal system can't get any worse." Roy said.
"One of the things I plan to change if I get elected mayor is institute a strict zero tolerance policy for metahuman trafficking and commissioning a special task force to hunt it down specifically. After all, change has to start somewhere. But anyways, do we have an id on the Count's real name?" Oliver asked Curtis, who nodded.
"We do, and that's where it gets a little complicated. Count Vertigo's real name is Count Werner Zytle of Vlatvia." Curtis said.
"Who's also on Argus and Interpol's most wanted list for attempting a coup after killing his brother and his family to try and steal the crown." Oliver said.
"So, he's an international fugitive who's been reduced to this. Nice." Roy said.
"Don't underestimate him. There are rumors that the way Vertigo escaped prosecution in Vlatvia was because of some unidentified meta power. No confirmation though." John said, going off both league intel and Argus intel.
"John, call Jake and give him this intel, I want Argus to meet us there." Oliver said.
"On it." John said, right as Oliver noticed his wife twitch a bit.
"Everything okay Laurel?" Oliver asked.
"Yeah, just a twinge. Nothing to worry about." Laurel said, but Oliver narrowed his eyes, not sure if he believed her.
"I'm fine, the twins are just active right now. The doctor said that the closer I get to my due date, the more stuff like this would happen." Laurel said, since her due date was about two weeks away.
"Call Abby, just to be safe." Oliver said, since Laurel made it clear that the only doctor she'd let bring her children into the world was the one who brought Jasmine into it.
"Ollie." Laurel said.
"I'd rather be prepared. Maybe I should let John take the lead on this." Oliver said.
"No, you're being crazy, it's fine. This is more important." Laurel said.
"No. I missed Jasmine's birth, I'm not missing the birth of the twins." Oliver said.
"Look, how about this, we go, but we keep the comms on and if it turns into something, Kase can get Oliver to the hospital immediately." Thea offered as a compromise.
"And if it'll make you calm down, I'll call Abby and have her come here to be ready, since I do agree that these kids will be born in a hospital, not in a superhero base." Laurel said.
"Then maybe you should at least go home and be comfortable like you're supposed to be doing. Especially since we all know Abby's going to be furious when she finds out that you're still coming here." Helena said.
"And I'm calling your sister in to make sure you do exactly that. You know Sara wants to make sure she's here for the birth." Oliver said and Laurel rolled her eyes, but nodded.
"Thank god it's safe to use the zetatube while pregnant." Laurel said as she finally gave in and walked over to the zeta tubes, which spun to life as she walked through.
"Black Canary, 16, access granted." the AI said as she walked through.
"Thank god Sara has access to the network now because I want her at the mansion as soon as possible." Oliver said.
"You should really give mom access to the network so she can get back quickly when the time comes." Thea said.
"She's already on her way back home. I talked to her yesterday." Oliver said.
"Anyways, since your wife is insistent that you be here instead of with her right now, we should probably get moving." John said, since he could tell that Oliver wanted to get this mission over with immediately.
"Right. Let's move. I want this wrapped up quickly." Oliver said.
