Chapter 128

"So, what did you get for us?" Oliver asked as Roy and Kase returned from their meeting with the Bratva.

"Alexei's getting impatient," Roy said. "He thinks you're disrespecting him by refusing to meet face to face. He won't do anything unless you show up."

Oliver sighed, already annoyed.

"I also think he was less focused on business and more focused on checking me out," Kase added flatly. "Guy's a creep."

Oliver's jaw tightened. "I'll deal with him later. You'd think Alexei would be more cooperative considering I'm the one who decides when he gets to go home."

Right on cue, his phone rang. He glanced down—Anatoly.

"I need to take this."

He stepped away.

"Kapushion," Anatoly Knyazev greeted warmly. "It has been too long."

"I'm guessing Alexei went over my head," Oliver replied.

"Indeed. Bold, considering how thin his ice already is." Anatoly's tone hardened. "Perhaps it is time for a change."

Oliver exhaled slowly. "He's not just being difficult. I've been hearing things—rumors that he's brought the Bratva back into the sex trade. I thought you shut that down."

A pause.

"I did," Anatoly said quietly. "Alexei always was too loyal to old ways... and to Gregor. It seems exile has not improved him."

"So what now?"

"I will bring him home," Anatoly said. "Russia will deal with him properly. No more disrespect. Not to me—and certainly not to my most trusted captain."

Oliver allowed himself a small nod. "I appreciate it, brother."

"But you did not call me only for this," Anatoly continued. "What favor did you attempt to request?"

Oliver's expression darkened.

"I need information. A drug dealer operating here—goes by Count Vertigo. His product got planted on one of my daughters. He's poisoning my city."

"I will have a location for you within the hour," Anatoly said without hesitation. "I almost pity this man."

"You should," Oliver said quietly. "Because I don't."

"Then I will be in touch soon. Brothers help brothers."

"Within reason," Oliver replied, lowering his voice. "I'm not that man anymore."

A faint chuckle. "Da. We will speak soon."

The line went dead.

"So, how'd it go?" John asked.

"One of the perks of being the Pakhan's most trusted captain, is that he tends to take my side when these issues arise. Anatoly's gonna get us the info on Vertigo personally before he recalls Alexei to Russia to deal with his insubordination personally." Oliver said.

"That's good news. So what do we do in the meantime?" Thea asked.

"We hit the streets. We're not waiting for a lead. We're putting this Count Vertigo in the ground as soon as possible." Oliver said.

"Especially since according to my contacts, Vertigo might not be the only crap he's pushing in the Glades, but I don't have anything more than that." Roy said.

"You think he's branching out into other drugs?" John asked.

"Maybe. My contacts couldn't or wouldn't confirm, but thanks to Argus, I've done some additional research and found out that Vertigo, whoever he is, is bringing in some new manpower. One hitter in particular, Derek Sampson." Roy said.

"Sampson, are you sure?" Yolanda asked.

"Yeah, why, you know him?" Roy aside.

"No, but I know of him. He's an upcomer in the drug cartels in the Glades. I heard about him back when I was on the streets. Apparently he's got contacts with the 100 gang in Freeland." Yolanda said and Kase whistled.

"That's serious. From what I know, the 100 control a majority of Freeland." Kase said.

"They did, before Black Lightning returned to the scene, along with his new proteges, Lightning, Static and Geo Force." Oliver said regarding his fellow Justice Leaguer.

"Rene, you're our police insider, what do you know about Sampson?" Oliver asked, not noticing either of his daughters pulling out their phones to call or text someone.

"He's most known for slinging this new drug called Stardust. But I don't know much else besides the fact that the SCPD has been after him for a year now, though considering how many drug related cases are getting kicked out now, I'm beginning to wonder if our police department is as corrupt as Gotham's." Rene said.

"You think it's that bad?" Thea asked, since she knew from firsthand experience that Gotham PD was probably one of the most corrupt police forces in the country, if not the world. There's a reason Batman existed. The only cop in that entire department was Helena's godfather, Police Commissioner Bruce Gordon.

"Yeah. The only cops I know are clean are myself and Oliver's father-in-law." Rene said, right as Yolanda's phone buzzed.

"I think I know what drug Sampson might be bringing from Freeland." Yolanda said.

"What do you mean?" Oliver asked.

"Artemis and I reached out to Lightning, since Freeland is her turf. According to her, the 100 gang's newest drug release is something called Greenlight." Yolanda said.
