Chapter 4

"Wait, what?!"I sputtered still choking on my water. I swiftly grabbed a napkin from the table to catch the water spilling out of my mouth. I quickly cleaned up the water that I did spit out from the news with another napkin and toss them in the trash can. "I'm sorry. Did you say that my family is dead?"

"Yes. You heard me right. We're not quite sure what happened but we could take you to the scene," offered the tall one. I nodded and quickly got my shoes on. I led them outside and hopped into one of the patrol cars.

In a few minutes, we arrived at the scene. I got out immediately and ducked under the tape. The officers followed behind me and led to the victims. I studied them carefully and knew one thing. They weren't my family. They look nothing like them. I sighed and joined the other officials. I tapped on one of the short cops and he looked up.

"Can I help you?" he grumbled.

"Yes. I have a question." He groaned in annoyance.

"Fire away."

"Did you ever check their DNA or driver's license? Did you find any of their identity? They are not my family for sure." He turned around to face me. I backed up from his disgusting breath. That guy really needed a breath mint.

"No. They just said that they were your family and nothing else. That's all I know along with the fact that you'll be leaving for the orphanage tomorrow in the morning." I froze. Sure my family was missing but they couldn't prove that they were dead. These people are not my family though I do feel bad for their unfortunate accident. But taking me to the orphanage is way too soon. It's only been a day or two since they've gone missing. They've got no evidence that they are my family so they can't send me to the orphanage without proving that my parents are dead.

"That's way too soon! My family isn't even missing!"I lied in a convincing tone. He just shook his head.

"The others told me that your parents weren't even there when they confronted you."

"They told me that they were going to pick my brother up and then go grocery shopping," I argued. I don't know why, but I read articles and watched videos on how you can tell if someone is lying. They said that one they could tell is that they give way too detailed explanations to cover up their mistake. I made sure mine was short and simple. I also kept my cool so my voice wouldn't turn high pitched. I kept a steady gaze on him and waited for his response.

He sighed. "We are getting the blood sampled soon so... yeah." I put my head on my forehead and sighed in exasperation.

"You could've confirmed that it was my family before dragging me into something random."

"But you're still going to the orphan," he said as he looked out at the workers investigating. I flinched.

"Wait, what? I thought that we just cleared up that my family is not dead." I stared intently at him. He just shrugged and continued to stare into space. I growled.

"I already said that my parents and brother are out grocery shopping!" I said sternly. I was losing my patience with the police. They're so annoying. I stomped back to the patrol car and slammed the door shut. The driver was shocked because I slammed the door loud and hard that I shook the entire car and almost broke the door.

"I wanna go home," I said staring at the floor. The cop looked at me through the mirror and was confused. "NOW!! Don't bother waiting for them. Plus, I don't live that far. You can come back later to pick them up." I ordered sternly. He shrugged and drove me home.
