Chapter 5
After leaving the town hall, we came back to the apartment to find another letter in the mailbox. Laye had opened it this time, reading out the location of the test.
"It's in Perin." Laye says.
"Oh, great. Just perfect." Elle says.
"Perin?" I ask.
"It's a place." Laye says, face white.
"Yeah. A place." Elle says, expression the same as Laye's.
"Well, I got that it's a place. Can you tell me any information besides place?" I ask.
"Most players don't step near Perin." the old counterman says, "The people there aren't people. They're demons disguised as people. They eat players."
"What?! We're beginners in the fighting world! How the heck are we supposed to defeat that!" I yell.
"Nope." Laye and Elle say both at the same time.
The old man looks around the halls, to be sure there was no one listening.
"Look," he whispers, "You girls are special. I don't doubt for a second that you can't defeat those monsters."
"Thanks. I wish I thought the same." I say, looking over at Elle and Laye, who were so scared that they could hardly stand.
"Good luck." he says, throwing a splash potion at us. We fade away, and then, we were in a small village.
I was much different than the town I spawned in. Everything was kind of- off. It seemed to be only green land, and the houses were all little wooden sheds that looked exactly the same.
A man walks up in jeans and a brown t-shirt.
"Welcome, ladies. You look strange. Have you come from other states?" he asks.
"Uh, yeah. I guess." I say.
"Oh, how nice." he says, and suddenly other people started walking out of cabins wearing jeans and brown shirts.
"Uh, hi." I say, as a small girl tugs at my dress.
"Um, Jemma. We should go. I think the old man made a mistake." Laye says, a boy looking at her as a lion looks at his prey. The boy looks at her arm, and, in that split second, bit it. Laye flinched, a trail of blood flowing down her arm.
I got the message, and we started running away. We continued running away for awhile, but as soon as we passed the last house, we felt a jolt of electricity go through us.
"It's a barrier!" Elle yells, "We're so dead!"
Laye frowns. The demons were close behind, luckily, they ran slow.
"I just remembered. The barrier fades as soon as we complete the task of killing one of these guys." Elle says, finally coming back to her senses.
"Just one? That's weir-" she starts, but the human-formed demons had finally caught up.
We had started running again, but Laye was falling behind. They surround her, and she screams. I was about to run as fast as I could to her, but suddenly, I could see her kick one in front out of the way. She runs toward us, blood dripping from her face onto her dress, staining the navy blue color. Her galaxy tights were ripped everywhere, and her black combat boots nearly rip the ground with how fast she ran.
Elle, obviously furious, quickly took her by the hand, and dragged us into an alley. She whispered something, and some of her wounds healed.
"That's the best I can do. I've been studying spells almost every day, so I'm pretty good for a beginner." She says.
We begin running again, only to find a small girl at the end we were running out of. I looked into her eyes, which were a deep red color. For a second, I could've sworn they had the shape of a cross in them.
I stop running, stopping right in front of her. She grabs my hair, and puts her mouth by my ear. I pray that I would have an ear after this, but instead she whispers, "You're illegal."
She lets go of my hair, and I catch up with Elle and Laye.
"Are you okay?" Elle manages to let out.
"Yeah, I got free before she could bite my ear." I say, deciding not to tell Elle or Laye about what she said.
I look back for a second, and I notice that the demons run around the girl, making sure not to run into her. Her eyes were red. I saw it. Now they were blue.
"I can't run much longer guys." Laye wheezes, dodging the bite to the head.
I'm officially angry at these stupid things. I turn around. I only had to kill one of them. One easy smack. They catch up, and I feel my hands go numb from clenching them for so long. The little girl from earlier was no longer in sight. For some unknown reason, I was upset over the fact.
It wasn't that she was the one I wanted to go. Or so thought. But the crowd of hungry beasts ran closer to me, and I could feel adrenaline pumping through my veins.
My whole life flashed before my eyes that moment. The words "It's all a lie" were stuck in my head, though I didn't understand them.
In that moment, that, small, tiny moment was for me to decide. To live or to die. Something had to happen. Its not like the blood thirsty animals are just going to stop if I asked them to. But something inside me to choose the latter.
Of course, I didn't choose the latter. Like any normal person, I had the urge that I wanted to live, so I listened to that little thing in the back of my mind.
I stick out my hands out of some weird instinct, and the sound of some kind of animals being slaughtered fills my ears.
I wasn't on the ground anymore. I couldn't see what was happening, all I knew was my hands were wrapped in chains.
"Why are you up there?" I asked them.
My brain went foggy, and I woke up to someone screaming in my face. I couldn't see for a while, all I knew was everything around me smelled of wood.
My eyes finally came into focus, and the person yelling was Laye.
"Jemma! Are you okay?!" she yells.
"Um, yes." I say, looking at my hands there wasn't any chains.
"Where are we? Shouldn't we be fighting right now?" I ask.
"Um, actually, you killed the whole tribe by accident." Laye says.
"What?!" I yell.
"Yeah, you did. Well, anyways, our powers will be assigned a few days. The judges need to decide your- er, our skills." Elle says.
"Oh. This seems to happen to us a lot, huh? I pass out, you freak out, and then I wake up." I say, sitting up.
"Yeah, I guess so." Elle says, fingering through her hair.
Laye spaces out, looking out the window of the room. I decide not to disturb her.
The government building stood tall along the other buildings.
"She's dangerous." a man says.
"Yes, but it isn't fair for her!" Char says.
"It doesn't matter, as long as it is safe." the man replies.
Char sighs, "Yes, sir."
"Her power is unleashing."
