Chapter 2: Storms
"BOOM!" I could hear the thunder rumbling outside of my window and the rain piter pattering on my window.
"Well I guess that Chris was right." I say to myself, as I get out of bed and head downstairs.
I make myself a bowl of Frosted Flakes cereal and go sit beside Andrew and my parents.
"Good Morning, Maggie." My mom says as she turns on the TV.
When she turns to the news, what I see makes my stomach drop.
"Hurricane Ernesto is heading north towards North Carolina. If you are in the area that Ernesto can hit you, we advise that you evacuate, but you may be able to stay." The weather woman says.
"Maggie, you and Dixie will go down to Wee Winks today and get as much food and water as you can for our families. Andrew, you will help your father and I put clothes and other belongings in backpacks and hand bags." My mom says to us.
I look at her with fear in my eyes. "But mom, it's a storm out there! Dixie and I can't walk in that rain. Or ride bikes." As much as I want to help my family and Dixie's, it's just to dangerous out there.
"I know, Honey, but you need to." My mom says as she gets out a raincoat and umbrella. "Now can you call Dixie? You two better go together so that you aren't alone."
I nod and grabbed my phone. I dial Dixie's number right away.
"Hello?" I hear Dixie's voice say. "Hey, Dixie, do you wanna go down to Wee Winks with me to grabbed supplies for the Hurricane?" I ask eagerly.
"Ya, sure. I'll be at your house in 5 minutes." She says then hangs up.
I put on the raincoat that my mom gives me, grab the umbrella, then lock the doggy door so Champ and Paris can't get outside.
I walk onto the balcony and look at the once beautiful beach. The waves were huge, the pier was pretty much underwater, the rain pounding on the sand.
I then hear Dixie yell, "Maggie!" and I run the the front balcony and down the stairs.
"Dixie!" I say hugging her then I put up the umbrella.
"We should run." Dixie says when we stop hugging.
I agree then take off, trying to stay under the trees so we don't get as wet as we could.
When we get to Wee Winks, Chris is once again at the counter.
"Chris! You were right. Hurricane Ernesto is coming." Dixie practically yells, and heads turn to us. Her face turns pink and Chris laughs.
"I knew it! And maybe you shouldn't yell."
Dixie and I laugh, then go get our supplies.
We got water bottles, food (crackers, chips, apples, etc.), blankets,a small inflatable raft for each of us, and some more ponchos.
We check out then I say, "Thanks Chris. Stay safe." Chris smiles. "You too." He says.
Dixie and I walk back to our homes but the storm only got worse. And so did Ernesto.
