Chapter 33
The next morning Stevie awoke to Lindsey holding Andrew with the help of a young blonde nurse
"Linds...what are you doing here?" She smiled at the sight before her
"I wanted to see both of you."
"You're other baby is coming today too"
"The kids?"
"Yeah, Anna is bringing Evie and David"
Lindsey smiled happily, "Have they met the baby yet?"
"No, you were the first person"
Lindsey gushed, "He's perfect."
"Well, you helped make him, baby"
"I know so he has to be ninety percent you."
"Oh stop Lindsey..." she blushed and covered her face
"Don't hide from me."
"Well I'm far from perfect..."
"You are to me."
"Lindsey, don't you remember what I accused you off?" She said
"I forgive you."
"You are so perfect...I can't wait to join the rest of my family with their last name" Lindsey looked up at that
"You're saying yes?" Lindsey asked
"I'm saying yes..." she smiled
Lindsey cried happily, "Come here."
Stevie got off the bed and walked herself over to him
Lindsey kissed her hand
"Is that the best you can do?" The blonde nurse said from behind him, chuckling
"Physically, yes."
"I'm sure you can manage a kiss?" She said winking at Stevie
Lindsey smiled, reaching up for Stevie
Bending down to his level she smiled at him
Lindsey cupped her cheek and pulled her to him, kissing her tenderly
Stevie kissed him back, suddenly feeling tears on her cheeks
"Lindsey?" She pulled away
"I just love you so much..."
"I love you too!"
Within a few minuets there was a little voice behind
"Mommy?"
"Hi baby!" She said to Evie who stood in the doorway
"Hi mommy," she said shyly
"Whats wrong Evie?"
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, look who it is baby...!"
"Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Daddy!" Evie ran up to him
He handed Andrew to the nurse as Evie climbed on his lap
"Careful, baby," Lindsey winced
"Why is your face messy?" She touched his cheek
"Daddy had a little accident but I'm getting better," he answered
"I think I felt it daddy..."
"What?" Lindsey asked curiously
"A couple of days ago, I suddenly woke up and my chest hurt, and I just cried daddy..."
"Oh, sweet girl."
"I think I knew you got hurt..." she snuggled into him
"I do too."
"Why did I know though?"
"Because we have a deep connection."
"Because you are my daddy?" She looked at him like she was concentrating, causing him to smile
"Yes! Because I am your Daddy!" Lindsey said happily
David suddenly cried, knowing Stevie was in the room and not holding him
"Hey baby!" Stevie smiled as Anna brought him to her
Stevie took him and lifted him up
"Happy now mommy has you?"
David hugged her tightly around the neck, giving her his best sloppy kiss
"Was that a kiss for mommy?!"
"Mo...maaa" he got out
"Oh David!" Stevie cried and held him tightly
"Did he just say something?" Lindsey asked shocked
"He said Mama." Stevie gloated
Lindsey wheeled over to her, looking at David
"Say...dada..." he spoke in a childish voice
"Mo...ma" David repeated and laughed
"Say dada," Stevie encouraged him
"Mo...ma"
"We'll work on it."
"Where's the baby?" Evie asked
"He's over there" she pointed to the nurse, and looked at Lindsey, who looked a little disappointed
The nurse brought him over to Stevie, "Evie, this is Andrew...your baby brother."
"He's so tiny!" Evie said
"He was a little early."
"He's cute!" Stevie looked to Lindsey who still had a funny look on his face
"Are you okay, Lindsey?" She whispered
Lindsey just nodded
"Yeah, I think I'm going to go back to my room"
"Honey, stay with us, please."
He stayed where he was and watched his family
"When can we all go home?" Evie asked
"Well I will be home before daddy, I think"
"Can we stay here with him?"
"I'd rather you went home, Evie" Lindsey said
"Why?"
"A hospital isn't the place for kids"
"I want to stay here with you."
"Can she stay with me?" Lindsey asked the nurse
"Sure!"
"Okay come with me then, leave David with mama"
"Lindsey, why are you leaving?"
"I'm tired"
"Okay, I'll come see you later."
"Yeah" Lindsey took Evie and wheeled himself back to his room
Stevie sighed, wondering what was up with him
She would go speak to him later, but first she turned to the nurse
"Would Lindsey be able to be moved in here with us?"
"I'll see."
"I'd love that, thank you!"
"No promises."
"Could you go and ask now? Please?" Stevie begged
"I will," the nurse nodded and left
It didn't take long for her to return to the room, to give Stevie he answer
"Only for tonight."
Stevie could deal with that, it was better than nothing at all
"I'll go check with him to see if he is up to the move."
"Thank you so much!" Once again the nurse disappeared to speak with Lindsey
They pushed his bed in ten minutes later
"Hey baby" Stevie smiled
"Hey."
"Are you actually going to speak to me properly?" She asked
"Properly?"
"Yeah, your giving me short answers and talking to me like a stranger"
"I'm in pain, honey. I just want to rest and sleep. I'm sorry," Lindsey sighed
"Is it...is it because David won't call you daddy?"
"No, Stevie. I'm just in pain and don't feel like being drug around the hospital after I've had major surgery."
"I just...I wanted you here...would you have rather stayed put?"
"No, but you have to take into consideration my operation. I'm in a lot of pain."
"Alright...I'm sorry, I should never have asked" she said sadly
"I forgive you," Lindsey closed his eyes and tried to get some sleep, Evie sleeping at the foot of his bed
Stevie just watched him, wondering whether it was just the pain making him grouchy
"I'm sorry for bitching," Lindsey sighed
Stevie just shrugged and looked away, a tear rolling down her cheek
"When will Andrew get the tubes removed?"
"They will look again in a week"
"I feel so bad for him...that can't be comfortable."
"I hate it, when they put the tube up he started to choke..."
Lindsey closed his eyes, "I feel so responsible."
"Don't, I should never have said you were, that was horrible"
"I still believe it. I started the fight and I delivered him."
"You think you delivered him wrong?" Stevie asked
Lindsey nodded sadly, "I had no clue what I was doing."
"You got him out perfect! I couldn't have done it alone, he was the wrong way honey"
"Both of your lives were in my hands."
"And we are both okay! I should of never said that you killed him...I'm so sorry Lindsey! You walked out I front of a car because of me..."
"It wasn't your fault." Lindsey shook his head, "Nothing is your fault."
"Don't always take all the blame, Lindsey!" She said frustrated
"I love you enough to do it. You do nothing wrong in my eyes!"
"Baby, you almost died because of me? Do you not understand that?!"
"You didn't push me in front of that car! You didn't do anything!"
Getting up from the bed she walked over and took his face in her hands
"Stop thinking I'm perfect!"
"To me...you are."
"You.almost.died!" She was trying to get through to him
"You weren't concentrating, because you were thinking about what I said!" She said
Lindsey still wasn't having any of it.
"Why are you so fucking stubborn? I hate that about you..." she let go of his face shaking her head
"Come here," he patted the space beside him, "Bring Andrew and David."
Picking up the babies, she went and sat on Lindsey's bed
Lindsey had Stevie lay David on this other side as she laid on the opposite
"You still love me right?" He asked, feeling a little vulnerable
"I will always love you."
He snuggled David onto his chest, and tried to get some sleep
Andrew woke up soon after, needing a feeding and a changing
Stevie was sleeping, so Lindsey decided to try it, taking David off him and moving him gently to the bed her lifted Andrew
"Hey," Lindsey struggled, gently placing him on Stevie's bed and grabbing a diaper
Finishing his diaper Lindsey lifted him higher
"You daddy's boy? Yes you are!" He coed, he went to put him down when he doubled over in pain, suddenly seeing a lot of his gown turning red
"Stevie," Lindsey gasped, nudging her
"Hmm?" She mumbled
"Stevie, I ripped my stitches."
"Shit...what?" She suddenly shot up
"Help me."
Lindsey started to feel a little faint from losing blood once again
He eased himself onto the floor
"Lindsey!" She came rushing to him whilst waiting for a nurse
Lindsey held his stomach, his gown now soaked with blood.
"It's okay..." Stevie was internally panicking, but she pushed down on his wound, trying to add pressure
Lindsey gritted, "Shit!"
"I'm sorry...but there's so much blood..."
Lindsey began to feel numb, leaning against her as his eyes closed
"No! Keep your eyes focused on me baby! Don't close them, keep them open for me"
Nurses rushed in, getting him into a gurney and rushing him into surgery. It happened so quickly that Stevie didn't get a chance to even comfort him
"Mommy...where did daddy go?" Evie asked rubbing her eyes
"Baby he had to go back in for surgery," Stevie said
Evie started to cry
"Is he going to die...?"
"No! No he isn't!"
Rubbing her eyes she tried to stop her tears for her father, but she became frustrated when she couldn't
"He'll be back in a little while,"'Stevie held her in her lap
"I hate when daddy goes away from me!"
"I do too," Stevie kissed her head
They didn't get any news on Lindsey for hours
A nurse walked in to feed Andrew, "How is Lindsey?"
"I won't sugar coat it, it's not looking good"
Stevie made sure that the children were comfortable before following the nurse into the hallway, "What's going on?"
"He's lost an incredible amount of blood and we didn't realise that one of his ribs was half broken, and the moving about he's been doing has snapped the rest off and punctured his lung slightly"
"Is he gonna die?" Stevie trembled
"It's looking more likely than not that he won't pull through..."
"What can I do? Can I give blood?"
"No, you lost a lot yourself giving birth, you can't afford to lose anymore"
"Can you do a blood transfusion?! Something?!" She sobbed
"It's not the blood that's the issue here, it's the internal damage, he shouldn't of been moving as much as he was, and he certainly shouldn't of been picking a baby up"
"This is my fault! Can you please take me to him?!"
"He won't be responsive at all"
"I just want him."
Stevie was taken to Lindsey, just like his son he had tubes everywhere
"Oh baby," she covered her mouth, sobbing lightly. "You'll be okay," Stevie rubbed his chest
Lindsey didn't even move a finger, he was as still as anything, she thought he was doing alright
"I'll stay with you. Someone is calling Mom to stay with the kids, I won't leave you."
Pulling the chair up she sat down, clutching his hand in hers
She kissed his hand, "Please don't leave me."
She hated the beeps and sound of the respirator
"Lindsey, we just had a baby...you can't leave me alone."
There was no sigh whatsoever that he was going to answer her, she broke down, not coping very well with the events of the past few days
"I can't do this!" She cried
Somehow Evie had snuck past the nurse and found her way to Stevie
"Baby? What are you doing here?" Stevie quickly wiped her eyes
"I missed daddy"
"How did you find us?"
"I followed a nurse..."
"Come here. Let Daddy know that you are here."
Evie climbed into Stevie's lap, leaning over and placing her head on Lindsey's shoulder
"I'm here daddy..."
Evie may have been young...but she knew that this didn't look good and was out of her hands
"It's okay if you want to let go daddy...I know you hurt..."
Stevie immediately sobbed
Evie carefully moved the rest of her body onto the bed
"Tell him that you love him," Stevie said gently
"I love you so much daddy...you're my hero"
"Linds....let go." Stevie kissed his head
All of a sudden a long beep filled the room
Stevie sobbed, burying her head into his chest
"Has he gone mommy?"
Stevie nodded, "Yeah baby..."
Evie clutched onto Lindsey's neck as multiple nurses and doctors came running in
"Let him go peacefully." Stevie said
"I want to stay..." Evie said
"We will. We aren't leaving him..."
"We need to get to him" they said to Evie
"You can sit in my lap and we'll hold his hand," Stevie said
"No, I need to hold him, he needs to know he isn't alone"
"He does know. He knows that we are right here."
Evie finally got off and sat on Stevie, grabbing her fathers hand and holding it tight
"We love you, Lindsey."
"Why's isn't David and Andrew here?"
"They're too young to understand what's going on."
"They need to say bye to daddy!"
Stevie looked to the nurses to help, they immediately went to fetch them
They managed to wheel Andrews machines in to, placing him next to Lindsey's bed
"David can you say dada?" Stevie asked
"Ma...ma" he smiled
"No baby, please say it for Daddy."
"Da..." he looked like he was concentrating
"Good job!" Stevie kissed his head. "Can you give Daddy a kiss?"
She held David over him, and he kissed him sloppily
"Dada..." he gurgled out
Stevie kissed David's head, "Daddy loves you."
David sensed something was happening, and squealed, trying to clutch onto Lindsey's gown
"Baby, let go," Stevie pulled
He screamed bloody murder, doing anything to get back to Lindsey
"David, please," she tried to calm him
"Dada!" He kept repeating
Barbara came in. She saw Lindsey on the bed and Stevie looked like she was struggling to keep it together
"Tee...what happened?"
Stevie shook her head and placed David back on Lindsey's chest
"What's the matter with Lindsey...?"
"He died, Mom...."
Barbara had to steady herself
"What...?"
Stevie melted down completely
"Do something!" Barbara shouted at the doctors
"There's nothing we can do..."
"But, I spoke to him on the phone a few hours ago!"
"I'm sorry."
Walking over to Lindsey she stroked his curls
"Come on son...it's mom, don't leave us all!"
"My baby girl needs you, you can't leave her here all alone with the kids...I'm sorry for everything that I've said...please wake up."
Barbra pleaded with him
"We're going to have to ask you all to leave the room now..."
"No!" They all cried
Barbara held his hand
"Come on! Make my girl a Buckingham!"
It was all silent until Barbara cried
"He squeezed my hand!"
"He couldn't have, Mama...." Stevie shook her head
"He did! He squeezed it!" Barbara cried
"He's dead!" Stevie cried
"No! Come on Linds! Do it again...!"
Barbara felt his finger twitch
"Stevie, he's moving, I'm telling you!"
"Mom, please," she whimpered, shaking her head
"Come here!" She made Stevie replace her hand with her own
"Show Stevie, son!"
Lindsey twitched his thumb, barely noticeably
Stevie was so emotional that she couldn't feel it
"Mom why are you lying?! Do you like hurting me?! Is that it?!"
"No, I'm telling the truth" she cried
"I felt nothing!"
"Try again! Please, try again"
Stevie shook her head, "Mom...let him go."
"I can't! Not when I know he's still with us"
"He's not moving!"
"Lindsey...I'm begging you, show her"
Lindsey weakly squeezed Stevie's hand
"Oh my god..."
Stevie dropped to her knees beside the bed, "Baby..."
"He's still alive!" She shouted to the doctors
Everyone scrambled around turning on and resetting machines
Lindsey suddenly took a deep breath, and weakly brought his hand up to Davids bottom
"Lindsey!" Stevie kissed his lips
He mumbled from the back of his throat
"Don't speak, just rest!" She sniffled
Barbara placed her hands on Stevie's shoulders, I knew he was alive
"Thank you, Mom."
"Don't thank me" Evie suddenly saw him move to with her own eyes
"Daddy!" Evie cried, trying to climb to him
"Evie no!" Stevie tried to grab her but she was to fast
Evie curled next to him
Evie felt his hand rest on her leg, he couldn't lift it any higher
"Hi Daddy," she whispered, placing her tiny hand on his
He squeezed her very slightly in reply, causing her to smile and burrow into his side even more
"I love you. I'll stay with you."
Stevie couldn't believe how much love her daughter had for Lindsey, it was hard to believe she came from such a monster
Stevie kissed Lindsey once more, "Andrew is here too." She told him
His eyes very slightly twitched, trying to search out his third child
"He's across the room, baby. His things wouldn't fit over here."
It was apparent he was a little distressed at not being able to get to Andrew
"It's alright," hearing his heart rate rise on the monitor, "I'll bring him to you in a minute."
It slowed back down again and Stevie tried to figure a way to bring him to Lindsey
"It'll be alright," Stevie said
"Excuse me? How can I get his son to him?"
"I'm sure that we can arrange something," a few nurses began to move some machines
Within a few minuets Andrew was situated next to Lindsey, turning his head to look at his father
Stevie smiled softly, "He's looking at you, Lindsey."
Lindsey was moving his hand slightly, wanting to touch Andrew
Stevie picked up his hand and placed it on Andrew's belly
"You feel him hmm?" She asked
She saw Lindsey slowly brush his pointer finger back and forth on Andrew's stomach
"Is that daddy?" She cooed to the baby
Andrew began to fall asleep
"He loves you so much Linds"
She saw a tear escape out of Lindsey's eye
"Hey hey, don't cry baby..." she wiped his tear away
She saw his lips move slightly as if he was trying to say something
"What, sweetheart?" She put her ear right by his mouth
"Love..."he managed to word
"Love, what?"
"You..."
"Oh, I love you too, Lindsey!" She rubbed her cheek against his
She saw more tears slip from his eyes
"Stop crying honey..."
"I think he's had enough exertion," The doctor told Stevie
"Why is he so emotional?" She asked
"He's had a hard time."
"Linds, we need to go now..."
"You can stay, but I would suggest that the kids go home."
"Why?"
"Kids tend to get restless..."
"Trust me, they won't be restless around him, they could sit with him for hours"
"Alright."
Stevie settled herself down on the chair, neither of the kids wanted to come away from Lindsey
"Get some sleep, Lindsey. We'll be here."
Stevie woke up a good few hours later, turning to look at Lindsey to find him with his hand back on Andrews belly
Stevie smiled, placing her hand over his
He opened his eyes to look at her
"Good morning, baby."
He smiled, and mumbled, still unable to speak
"Shh, I have a feeling that today is going to be a good day."
He smiled again and turned on his side, bringing Andrew a little closer to him
"I love you. I'm going to get a coffee, okay?"
He nodded and watched as she left the room, staring at his newest child
Andrew stared over at him
Evie suddenly woke up by his side
"Morning daddy!"
Lindsey smiled softly at her
"Why can't you talk daddy?" She brought her face to his and rubbed noses with him
"Love...y-you," Lindsey said weakly
"I love you more, daddy..."
Lindsey kissed her head and closed his eyes
Stevie came back with coffee a short time later
"Are you alright?" Stevie rubbed his shoulder
He nodded gently, nuzzling into her arm
"Your nurse passed me in the hallway, she's bringing you some food later. I'll help you eat it," Stevie told him
He looked heartbroken as he realised he would need help just to eat
"I don't mind, we need you to get stronger for us!" Stevie kissed his hand
He nodded, and waited for his food
Stevie was very attentive to him, fussing over his gown and blankets
He tried to stand it but eventually ended up pushing her hand away
She looked offended, "Linds?"
He turned away from her
"Baby, did I do something?"
She could see as he shook his head
"Your food is here..."she told him
He still wouldn't look at her
"Baby..." she touched his shoulder
She took the tray of food from the nurse, "Evie, you want to help Daddy eat?"
"Yeah! Let's eat daddy!"
Lindsey laid on his back and let Stevie elevate his bed
"Don't make me do the choo choo train daddy!" Evie giggled
Lindsey smiled, "o-okay," he struggled
Evie grinned at her father and fed a spoon full of food to him
"Good job!" Stevie praised her
Eventually the whole bowl had been eaten and Evie was wiping the bits he had dribbled
"T-thank....you," Lindsey said
"You're welcome!" She hugged him round the neck
"Okay Evie. Let's give Daddy a rest."
"Do I have to?" Evie pouted
"I suppose not."
Evie stayed and just sat in front of Lindsey, waffling off about absolutely anything she could think of
David awoke and babbled into their conversation
Stevie laughed at how the kids were talking to Lindsey, but it was obvious he was upset that he couldn't answer them back
"I'll take you two to get something to eat. Let Daddy have some time with Andrew."
"Okay mommy" Evie gave Lindsey a kiss before climbing off the bed, Stevie picking David up and placing him on her hip
Stevie laid Andrew beside Lindsey and took the kids to the cafeteria
Lindsey sat where he was, moving his hand to rest on Andrew, soothing him and making him gurgle
He couldn't believe that he and Stevie finally had a child together! Of course he loved Evie and David, but Andrew was half of him and half of Stevie!
For that this baby would always hold a special place in his heart.
