Chapter 24

Stevie laid in the hospital bed with Lindsey, waiting for him to show any sign that he was going to be okay. It had been a gruesome forty eight hours.

She needed to see a doctor herself, but he was more important right now

Stevie kissed his cheek, adjusting his gown and blanket to make sure that he was comfortable, "I'm so sorry that I lost our baby, Lindsey," truly knowing in her heart that it was his

Placing her forehead to his temple she let some tears fall, holding tight onto his hand

Barbara quietly entered the room, bringing Stevie a change of clothes

"Hey, sweetheart...how you doing?"

"I don't know," shaking her head, "I don't really feel anything."

"Have you seen a doctor yet?"

"No, I don't want Lindsey to be alone."
He
"You could always ask if it's to late to do a paternity test" Barbara stroked her daughters hair

"I know that it's his, I can feel it."

"I know honey, but I think it would be nice for you to know for sure"

"It doesn't matter anymore."

"You know it does, now go and ask, I'll stay with Lindsey"

Stevie sat up at kissed Lindsey's forehead, fixing his blanket and turning to her mother, "Don't leave him."

"I would never"

Stevie walked out the room and to the nurses station

"Excuse me," Stevie said softly

"Yes, dear?" The friendly looking older nurse answered

"I need a paternity test, please..." she said awkwardly, not sure how to go about this situation

"Alright, my love, would you like to follow me?" Stevie followed her down to a little room

"I-I miscarried," Stevie said as she was the nurse turning on the ultrasound machine

"When?"

"Last night..."

"We should still be okay" the nurse squeezed her hand

Stevie laid back on the table and closed her eyes

Feeling the cool gel on her stomach, the nurse placed the transducer down, and moved it around

"Please don't make me do this," Stevie cried, "I already know they're gone."

"I need to know where they are, so I can place the needle into the placenta...I'm sorry honey!"

Stevie squeezed her eyes shut tightly, wanting Lindsey there to comfort her

"Okay, I found them..."

"I don't want to see."

"Are you sure? A lot of women say no, then regret it terribly" Stevie turned her head to the monitor, her eyes still tight

"It's alright," the nurse soothed

Stevie took the nurses hand, and finally opened her eyes

Seeing the tiny body on the screen, Stevie broke down

All she wanted was Lindsey to hold her tight, and tell her it would be okay

"Is there...definetely no heartbeat?" Stevie asked tearfully

"I'm sorry..."

Stevie covered her face and cried, she should have done what Lindsey had asked and left, she thought to herself

"I need to get to the placenta, you're going to feel a pinch," Pulling out a huge needle

Stevie nodded and gritted her teeth, as she felt the needle puncture her stomach

Almost thirty seconds passed before the needle came out, "I'm going to need some of the father's DNA."

"What do you need?"

"Blood, a hair, or saliva."

"He's staying here, at the hospital"

"That shouldn't be a problem then. I'll page someone for a blood sample. Do you have his consent?"

"Yes" was all Stevie said

"Okie dokie."

The nurse stepped away and paged a colleague to bring a blood sample from Lindsey

"We will have the results in a few days."

"Days? Can it not be faster than that, I don't know if he's going to last days..."

"I'm sorry, I can try to put a rush on it, but I can't promise anything."

"I'd be so thankful..."

"I promise to try. I will take it to the lab myself. And this appointment never happened okay? It's free of charge."

"What...? Are you sure?" Stevie asked surprised

"Yes, you've been through enough, honey."

"Thank you so much! That really means a lot to me"

"It's no problem, honey."

Making her way back to Lindsey, she found she couldn't stop crying

Crawling into bed with Lindsey, she snuggled up to him, kissing his face

"How did it go Tee?" Barbara asked carefully

"I don't want to talk about it."

"Okay sweetheart!"

"Can I have some time alone with him please?" Stevie asked quietly

"Of course." Barbara nodded and quietly left

"Hey, baby...I'm back" Stevie played with the hair on his chest

Laying her head on his chest she concentrated on his heartbeat

"I'm sorry I didn't listen to you..." she told him

"This is all my fault. If I hadn't jumped on his back...you wouldn't have been shot."

"I yelled at Evie too..." she added into the silence

"Please wake up."

Stevie found herself becoming distressed when he wouldn't

"Lindsey, I need to to be here with me.

Holding onto him tight, she ended up crying herself to sleep

Stevie awoke the next morning to Lindsey stroking her arm

Suddenly sitting up, she looked at him

Lindsey's ventilation tube was gone and he was softly smiling down at her

"How are you breathing so well?" Stevie questioned confused

She then noticed the oxygen tube under his nose

"How are you feeling?" She asked him, hugging him tightly

"I hurt," he said weakly, almost inaudible

"Sorry..." she stopped squeezing him

"It's not you."

"I'm so sorry, I got you shot..." Stevie cried

"None of this is your fault."

"It all is, if I wasn't such a whore..."

"Don't say that!" He tried to yell

Stevie cried into her hands, rocking back and forth

"It's true..."

"No," Lindsey shook his head, "I love you."

Before Stevie could say anything else,  there was a knock at the door

"Come in." Stevie said

It was the nurse she had spoken to the day before

"Could I have a word please?" She asked Stevie smiling slightly

"Yes," She nodded, kissing Lindsey and following the nurse into the hallway

Standing in the hall, she spoke

"It took some persuading, but I managed to get the results done over night..."

"And..." Stevie wrung her hands nervously

"It's a complete match...he is the father"

Stevie sighed in relief, "Thank you!" Hugging the nurse

"We also are ninety percent sure on the sex, is that something you want to know?"

"Yes," she nodded

"It was a girl..." the nurse said sadly

"Thank you," Stevie sniffled, returning to Lindsey

"Linds? I have something to tell you."

"Okay, baby?"

Stevie sat next to him and took his hand, "I lost the baby....she was yours."

Lindsey looked completely devastated, struggling to keep his emotions in

"I got a paternity test done, it was a match to you. I'm so sorry," Stevie held him

"Oh my god...this hurts..." he cried

"Please forgive me."

He didn't say anything to that

"You said she?" He questioned

"Yes. They were almost positive that they were a girl."

Lindsey sobbed hard, how could he of let this happen

"I love you. I'm sorry!" She cried

"Where's Evie? I need her..." Lindsey said sitting up straight

"Lay back down, baby! I'll go get her." Stevie rushed out

Stevie found the waiting room, and saw her mother

"Evie, Daddy wants to see you"

Evie immediately ran and jumped in her arms, "I want Daddy!"

Stevie walked back to Lindsey and placed Evie on the bed

"Daddy," she curled up to him, cry my softly

"Stevie, could you leave us alone please" he said without looking at her

"Yes," Stevie nodded and left to speak to her mother

"He hates me!" Stevie cried to Barbara

"What...what are you talking about?" Barbara asked bringing Stevie to her chest

"I think he blames me for everything."

"He doesn't, why would you think that?"

"He won't tell me he loves me! He won't accept my apology! He won't even look at me!"

"Why? What did you say?" Barbara placed a kiss to her head

"I asked him to forgive me and I've apologized many times! I told him I loved him! He ignores it!"

"He's probably just in pain Tee"

"Yeah...." Stevie looked down

"Baby, what aren't you telling me?"

"Nothing."

"I'm your mother, I know when something is going on"

"The baby was Lindsey's....a little girl."

"And you've told him?"

"Yes."

"I'm so sorry, you knew it was his..."

"I don't want to talk about this anymore."

"You can't just shut it out though, pretend it never happened."

"I'm not. I want to talk with Lindsey about it".

"Well, obviously that's working..."

Stevie stood up, "If you don't drop this then I'm going somewhere else."

"Stephanie Nicks, for once in your life, don't run away from your problems! Talk to me!" Barbara was angry

"Mother! Not now!"

"You need to! Your going to make yourself sick!"

"I don't want to talk right now."

"Fine then! Walk away, just like you always do!"

Stevie looked furious, turning and stomping away from her mother

"See! Your being a coward!" Barbara called

Before Stevie had even realised she had stormed back and slapped her own mother across the face

"Mommy..." Stevie said trembling, covering her mouth as she ran her fingers across Barbara's red cheek

Barbara stood still, shocked, clutching her burning face, her eyes filled with tears

"Mom, please forgive me. I didn't mean to-"

Without saying anything, Barbara picked up her purse and on shaky legs walked to the door

"Momma! I'm sorry!"

Stevie was heartbroken, her mother wasn't answering, walking out into the hallway she saw her father

"Daddy?" Stevie whimpered

He was about to embrace her when he saw Barbara's face

"Baby, what happened?" He held her red cheek

"Daddy, I didn't mean to hurt her- I lost my temper."

"You...you hit your own mother?"

"I didn't mean to!"

Jess brought Barbara into his arms

"I'm so disappointed in you Stephanie..."

"I'm sorry," Stevie cried

"I'm taking you home, Barb"

Stevie went into a daze, blacking out and then finding herself on the edge of the hospital roof

She didn't remember getting up there, she just knew she was now looking down at the cars below

"They don't need me," she cried

"I have nothing left anymore"

Hospital staff saw her on the cameras and security rushed to her

"Ma'am please step away from the ledge..." they carefully said

"I can't. They don't want me!"

"Who's they honey?"

"My family."

"I'm sure that isn't the case, just step away..."

"I want to die."

Downstairs, Lindsey was talking with Evie when a nurse suddenly burst in

"Sir, your fiancé is on the roof...I think she's going to jump..."

"What?" Lindsey sat up

"She's walked up onto the roof, and is standing on the edge"

"Take me to her!"

Lindsey was carefully put into a wheelchair, and taken to Stevie

Stevie had stepped up onto the ledge, staring down at the traffic 9 floors below

"Baby..." she heard from behind her

"Lindsey..." Stevie looked over her shoulder at him

"Get away from the edge Steph..."

She shook her head, "Everyone hates me."

"That's not true! Evie loves you more than anything"

"I hit my mother, my father is disappointed in me, you are angry at me, I yelled at Evie!"

"You hit your mom?"

Stevie nodded silently, taking a step closer to the edge

"Baby, stop! Who's going to look after Evie if you jump?"

"You."

"I'm not her father, Steph"

"Please Lindsey, just let me do this."

"No! Stevie, I'm not her father, if you go, she won't be allowed to stay with me, she'll go into care!"

"Get me the papers and I'll sign her over."

"It's not that easy!"

As Stevie was talking to Lindsey, security grabbed her and pulled her down

"No! Get off me!" She screamed, kicking around

They strapped her down to a gurney and transferred her to the psychiatric ward of the hospital

"Where are you taking me? Let me go!" She yelled

Lindsey's heart broke listening to her pleas. This was not his Stephanie, this girl truly needed help.
