Chapter 9

I tried rolling to the side, but as soon as I did, I felt like bursting into tears.

"Ugh! What the fuck...?" I squeezed my eyes for a second before opening them, still lying on my back. I was kind of confused; one moment I was feeling fine. In the next one I felt like my body was being torn in two parts. And then I was okay, again.

I became even more confused when I took in my surroundings; a room that was so white it made me sick- or maybe it was the smell of the room that was making me sick?

"Sally!" I jumped in my bed and snapped my head to the right, to see Briana and Carolyn, rushing toward me. "Are you okay? How are you feeling?"

I didn't respond; I just kept looking around myself, until I realized... "Am I at a hospital?"

"Oh my God!" Carrie whispered as she sat down on one of the two chairs next to my bed. "You lost your memory! See? I knew this cou-"

"Shut the fuck up, are you fucking mental?" Briana hissed angrily as she sat down next to her, and looked at me worriedly. "You do remember what happened, right, Sal?"

I sat up and looked around again, trying to remember what happened the previous day. Within seconds, pictures of that dark street, the scared woman and the man invaded my mind. Not to mention my 'bravery'.

"Oh my God," I mumbled, sitting further up in the bed, my eyes wide. That wasn't just a bad dream?!

"You had sex with Liam, didn't you?" Carolyn grinned mischievously at me, but it soon turned into a horrified frown when Briana started hitting her with her jacket.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" She snarled. "She's literally lying here with her hip bone and spine fractured! You think Liam would demolish her like that?!"

Carrie was quiet for a few seconds. "Yeah, you're right, I always imagined him as gentle and-"

"Wait, hold on," I finally spoke, my voice groggy. "I... What?"

I probably looked like a lost puppy, but the truth was, I was terrified. I jumped on a stranger's back in order to save a woman that I didn't even know, all because of being angry at a boy and having Red Bull. During all of that, I also managed to injure my body to the point where I had to be taken to a hospital.

Well, there's a Friday night that I'll make sure never repeats again.

Briana sighed, pulling me out of my thoughts, and I looked at her. "Your mum called me this morning, and told me that you're lying unconscious at the hospital. Just like that. She didn't even bother telling me why, just kept shouting 'it's all your fault' and similar shit. They even had to give her water and sugar when she saw me here."

Bri grimaced, and then shrugged. "She kind of hates me now."

"Anyway," Carolyn cut in. "We're waiting for an explanation."

"Yeah." Briana nodded. "What happened after I dropped you off? Didn't you go home?"

I didn't say anything for a few seconds, again, as I tried to find the right words. "Well, um..." I started after a minute. "I was walking down a street, and saw two people, a man and a woman... I think he was trying to do something, like steal from her, or whatever. And I just... Ran, and... Jumped on him."

Bri and Carrie first just stared at me, then looked at each other, and then back at me, their expressions going from blank to horrified.

"You what?" Carrie said quietly.

"I said, I ran and-"

"I heard you!" She hissed. "What were you thinking?!"

And then it began.

"He could have killed you!"

"Or worse, ra- ugh, attacked you!"

"You could have been lying at the mortuary or something right now!"

"All because of one damn energy drink!"

"Imagine carrying his ba-"

"Wait," Carolyn said, shutting Briana up. "How did you... How did you end up with a screwed up body?"

It took me a few seconds to process her question, and I made a mental note to ask if I'd had a concussion. "He fell on me."

"What do you mean, fell on you?" Carrie asked after a few moments of silence.

"He... Fell on his back, which I was on." I frowned at my dumb choice of words. "And then he just... Ran off."

I have no idea for how long the girls just sat there and gaped at me, but it ended when the door of my room opened. We all looked at it, and saw my parents walk in, looking stressed and scared, with another woman, who looked like she'd been crying eternity. I immediately recognized her; it was the woman I saved the previous evening. Oh boy.

"Oh God," The woman said, staring at me like I was Jesus or something. "That really is her, oh my God!"

As the words left her mouth, she turned to another man that I didn't notice walk in with my parents. It must have been her husband, since he looked middle-aged and hugged her back tightly. As she cried in his chest, he looked at me, the same way she did just a few seconds before.

I shifted in my bed; their presence was making me feel quite uncomfortable. As if not being able to tell that at all, Briana and Carolyn, the only people whom I actually wanted there, stood up.

"We're... Gonna leave..." Carolyn said in a rushed tone, tripping over her own feet.

"Yeah, I have to go to work and..." Briana started too but neither of them finished their sentences, as they both left after just smiling at me.

As soon as the door closed, the atmosphere changed completely; I felt incredibly uncomfortable. With my dad watching me sympathetically, my mum having a judgmental look in her eyes, and the man whom I didn't know was observing me like I was a reincarnation of Jesus... Well, I didn't like it, to say the least.

"What..." My mum started as she walked over to my bed, sitting on a chair on the side opposite of where Briana and Carolyn had been sitting. "... Were you thinking?"

I sighed as she took a breath to continue talking; here we go. "Do you have any idea what could have happened to you? You could have gotten killed, oh my God." My mum raised her arms in the air as she stood up, as if telling us she's giving up.

"Shane, could you, please?" She said as she walked to my dad, her hand covering her face.

My dad nodded and I rolled my eyes as he made his way toward me. He was never good at handling situations and giving inspiring speeches, but he was the only one who could replace mum when she was too shook up to handle it herself.

"Sally," He said through a sigh as he sat down. "Haven't we had this conversation before? You're not a child anymore, you're 19 and should know how to behave by now. If you ever see something like, like what you saw last night, don't try to stop it yourself. Call the police, whatever happens, just call the police. You wouldn't be lying here if you did that."

"I think..." I unglued my eyes from my dad's face, to look at the man who was still holding the woman from last night. Speaking of which, she finally let go of him and sniffled a few times, before looking at me with a small smile on her face. Before I could think of how to respond to that, the man spoke again.

"I think what you're forgetting is that, if she hadn't stopped it, my wife wouldn't be standing here either. She would probably be at the morgue or something."

At his words, his wife started crying again. Oh God, help me.

"So... Before you start treating her like she's done something wrong, I think you should keep in mind that she saved another person's life. I'm not telling you how to be parents, even though we have two kids and our son is about her age, but... Even though what she did was stupid, it's also something she should be praised for."

I smiled awkwardly, though my smile soon faded as the man's wife started crying even harder, turning around to her husband again. I really thought about listening to my dad, as I never, ever wanted to be in this situation again. Ever.

To my surprise, my dad smiled, and as he looked at my mum, I could see a hint of a smile on her lips too. He turned to me, and ruffled my hair while grinning. Great, I thought, now I probably look like more of an alien than before.

"That's out Sally. Our little Wonder Woman." I rolled my eyes an batted his hand away, making him chuckle. Just as I smiled too, I noticed the woman from the previous night walk toward me, and sit next to my dad. Things are about to become awkward on a whole new level.

"I have no idea how to express my gratitude, I seriously just..." She had to stop talking so she wouldn't burst into tears, again. "And I feel terrible that you're lying here because of me. If I could trade places with you, I swear I would."

"It's okay," I said, out of the blue, clearly shocking the woman. "I'm feeling fine, really. I'm probably gonna be able to go to school on Monday, too."

She smiled when I gave her a reassuring one. "That's not gonna take the guilt away, or how much your parents hate me right now, but..."

"Oh, no," My mum said hurriedly, walking to the foot of my bed. "We don't hate you at all, we're just... A teeny tiny bit angry at Sally."

"You have a beautiful name, you know." The woman's husband smiled at me. "I'm sure our son would fall in love with you, just like that."

As the two spouses looked at each other, they both nodded simultaneously in agreement. I'd probably be blushing madly if I were 13, but at 19, they were making me feel plain uncomfortable.

"Nice to know," I commented, luckily no one heard me.

"Um, you know..." The woman started hesitantly after a few seconds of silence. "We would love to have you over for dinner, right Geoff?" She stopped talking for a second to look at her husband, who started nodding frantically. "That's like, the least we could do, the absolute least, but I think it's a good start, yeah? And please, don't say no, I'll start crying again."

I grimaced at the woman's words, as she and everybody else laughed; she oddly reminded me of myself.

My parents were looking at each other, probably having one of their telepathic conversations. After a minute, my mum spoke. "That, um, that would be okay, I guess... We have time, and they said Sally would get released from the hospital tomorrow, so... Yeah, okay. Okay." She was never clumsy when she spoke, so I had no idea why she was talking like some sort of a klutz.

"That's amazing," The woman said with a grin as her husband, Geoff, started writing something down on a piece of paper. Probably their address. "So tomorrow's good?" She asked, and everyone nodded. Yay.

"Oh, and by the way, dear, my name is Karen," She turned to me and held her hand out, which I took awkwardly. "The woman whose life you saved and who got you here is Karen."

I smiled as she chuckled at herself, and within minutes, Karen and Geoff left.

"Nice people," I heard my dad say after they left.

I unbuckled my seat belt and tried carefully stepping out of my dad's car as I opened the door. Sadly, my spine decided it was a good time to start fucking with me. Again.

"Shit," I hissed, and my mum immediately sprinted over to me.

"Careful, honey, careful. With your mouth, too." I rolled my eyes; I knew she'd have to say something about my swearing.

She helped me walk over to the door of a pretty large house; two floors, a nice garden, a pretty big-looking backyard too. Just like any other suburban house.

My dad sighed as he rung the bell, and within seconds, the door was being opened by Geoff. He did quite look like he was expecting us; a neatly ironed white shirt, and black pants. Add a suit jacket, and he would pretty much look the way I want my husband to look on my wedding day.

"Good evening!" He said with a broad smile, giving my dad a firm handshake and my mum a hug. "We were actually kind of scared you wouldn't come."

"Oh, don't be silly," My mum said with an overly sweet smile, that didn't look fake for some reason. "We were quite eager to come here, weren't we, Sally?"

"Um... Absolutely." Maybe she was actually happy to be there.

"Hello!" I heard another familiar voice, and in the next second, Karen was walking through the hallway with a small girl in her arms. "I just had to wake Karlie up... She's been taking a nap. Say hi, Karlie!"

The girl frowned as she rubbed her eyes, and hid her head in her mother's neck, making both her and my mum go 'aw'. "She's still sleepy... Nice to see you there, Lois! You too, Shane!"

I took a step back as I observed the two families greeting each other for too fucking long. It's like best friends that haven't seen each other in years, and not strangers that met the previous day because the daughter of one of the families saved the wife of the other. I knew this would happen, I just knew it.

"Hello to you too, Sally! Don't be so shy, dear, we're normal, I promise!" Karen chuckled and I nodded a few times with a forced smile on my face. After hugging her and Geoff for an awkward few seconds, we finally stepped inside the house.

"Oh, don't bother taking your shoes off. Sally, you can go to the kitchen, it's that door on the left, right there. Our son should be there," Geoff said, a smile appearing on his face at the end of his sentence. When he said their son would fall in love with me, I hope he didn't actually want that to happen.

"Alright," I said, and started walking down the hallway, leaving the four grown ups talking cheerily behind me.

I slowly stepped through the first door on the left, to find myself in a living room-looking place. I thought this was where the kitchen should be?

Just as I was about to exit the room, I heard rattling dishes, and when I looked at where the sound was coming from, I was surprised to spot another door there. Like what the fuck, how is it that I didn't see those before?

With a slight frown, I stepped further inside, just as another person walked out of the other room, wearing Nike shorts and a white tanktop, and holding a chicken wing in his hand.

I don't think I've ever been closer to having a heart attack than when I looked up at the guy's face; he was also looking at me, and I swear our expressions portrayed the same amount of horror.

"No," My word came out as a quiet whine, as a grin started slowly forming on Liam's lips.

"Well, well, well," He said after a minute of silence, making shivers run down my spine. "You saved my mum's life? You're the hero she's been talking about non-stop?"

I couldn't even respond to that as I stared at his grinning face, too shocked to even start thinking about a reply.

"I see you two have met!" I jumped a little when I heard Geoff behind me. Wait, so this is their son? This is the person Geoff told me would fall in love with me, just like that?!

He walked over to stand behind his son, and put a hand on his shoulder, as the other three walked into the kitchen.

"We've actually-" I started, but was cut off by Liam.

"Hi," He said as he offered me his hand, and for a second I had no idea what the hell he was doing. "I'm Liam."

But then I realized; he wanted me to tell him my name.

I just started at him for a few seconds, before taking his hand. "Nice to meet you." I smiled forcefully, deciding I wasn't going to let him find out my name. Even though my parents were there, along with his who also knew my name. I don't know what I was fighting for; it was already a lost battle.

"Aren't you going to tell him your name, sweetheart?" My mum slid her hand over my back as she stood next to me to look at me, a smile on her face. Well thank you a whole fucking lot, mother.

I sighed, before letting the next couple of words tumble off my lips.

"I'm Sally."

As a priceless smile appeared on Liam's face when he finally got my name, I knew it was going to be one very long evening.
