[Chapter One] - [The Human]
Under any other circumstances, I think Bella Swan and I could have been friends. Sure, she's awkward and clumsy but I that if I could get her out of her shell, she could be a good friend. However, any thought of befriending the human flew out the window when I saw the looks she gave my husband and the looks he gave her as well.
The day we met Bella seemed like a normal day but something felt off from the very beginning. It started with Alice. I always enjoyed her quirky personality but something felt different about today. She seemed nervous and made a solid effort to avoid me. Then I noticed Edward acting strange, although, he claimed he was just in one of his moods which is a lie I could fall for any day with him.
It didn't click for me why they were acting strange until I noticed the oddly pale human. I was walking into the cafeteria with my arm linked around my husbands when I noticed her. Her scent stood out from the others and I knew she wasn't from around here.
She sat at the table not far from our own. Amongst her was a group of fairly popular students within our grade. I didn't know any of them personally but I have shared classes with them before.
"Who're they?" The new girl, who I later learned to be named Bella, asks not even trying to hide the fact that she was staring at me and Edward. I baked in the attention with a slightly arrogant smirk.
It wasn't hard to tell that Edward was one of the most liked out of our little family. Everyone felt too intimidated by Emmett or believed Jasper to be too weird. Rosalie also intimidated them not only on her own but with Emmett by her side. Alice's quirky attitude tended to throw people off while Edward was this large mystery to them. My mystery.
I always enjoyed listening to the teenagers gossip about us. I could hear the girls, and even some guys, crushing on my husband. My favorite thing to do was dangle Edward in front of them. I boasted about the fact that he's mine and they knew it.
"That's Edward and Nilsa Cullen." Jessica tells her. "They're both totally gorgeous, obviously. But she's super possessive and he hardly even looks at anyone other than her. So, don't even waste your time," Jessica advises as Edward takes a seat at the table. I plant myself in his lap and wrap an arm around his neck. One of his arms wraps around my waist while the other goes across my lap. I smirk at anyone who's staring at us as he naturally holds me close to him.
"I wasn't planning on it," Bella mutters but continues to glance towards us.
"What's wrong, my love?" I asks noticing a troubled look on Edward's face. I could also feel his hands dig into my skin, another sign of annoyance and frustration.
"I can't read her mind," Edward mutters but our whole table can hear him. I glance back towards the new girl. She glances towards us, or rather towards Edward, yet again. I growl under my breath and grab Edward's chin with my fingers and turn his head towards me.
I knew the girl was still watching us as I planted my lips against his. I kissed him dominantly, possessively. I wanted everyone, especially the new girl, to know that Edward Cullen is mine. I don't share anything, not even clothes let alone my husband.
"Don't worry about it, sweetie" I smile lightly dragging my fingertips over his jaw whilst staring into his golden eyes. "She's nothing but a human,"
Oh, how wrong I was.
All throughout lunch I felt as if I had to fight for Edwards attention, something I'm not used too. He continuously looked at Bella and she continued to glance back at him. It took every inch of my will power to restrain myself from marching over to the table to rip the girls head from her shoulders and bathe in her blood.
Edward, obviously having heard my thoughts, began to give me the attention I desired. However, it was too late. I already picked up on his fascination with the human and her curiousness with him. Try as he did, I ignored his affections and turned my attention to Rose, who was all too willing to strike up a conversation with me.
I ignored the subtle kisses Edward plants on my body. His cool lips would caress my shoulder or varies spots on my neck. His hand slipped up the back of my shirt and gently rubbed my back. Even his other hand tried to gain my attention by massaging my thigh. All attempts were futile as I continued to ignore him far too annoyed to make up just yet.
One glance at Alice and I knew it wasn't some mere fascination. She tried avoiding my gaze but when she failed I could see it in her eyes. I could see her mixed emotions, mainly the fear and sadness. I knew Alice had seen something about this human and my husband. I knew small glances from across the cafeteria were only the beginning.
What infuriated me further is the fact that Edward had Biology class with Bella right after lunch. Unfortunately, I did not share this class with them meaning I couldn't prevent the human from sitting beside Edward. The cherry on top of my fantastic day came when we all went home and Edward had a little chat with the family.
"You want to, what?" I ask slowly. I stand a few feet from Edward with my arms crossed. Nobody needed Jaspers ability to know my temper was rising and I was about to let loose. All the pent up anger and frustration was about to come undone.
"Just until I can get my thirst under control," Edward tries to reason. "It shouldn't be long, a few days maybe a week"
"A week!?" I snapped glaring at him. "You've been going to this school for almost three years and now you're having trouble with your thirst?" I growled. Edward is silent not wanting to continue this and further anger me but I didn't really care what he wanted at the moment. "This has to do with Bella, doesn't it?" I asks eerily calm. "Doesn't it!?" I practically scream causing a few of my family members to flinch.
"Yes," Edward responds.
"You listen, and you listen well, Edward Anthony Masen Jr." I growled marching up to him. "You take your week, do what you need to do, I won't stop you" I shake my head. "But when you come back, I want you to remember that you are my husband. Bella is just a human, she means nothing to any of us. I know you're curious about her because you can't read her mind, I know she's this big mystery to you but it is a mystery you will not solve, am I understood?" I ask daring him to defy me.
"I don't want anyone else, Nillie" Edward says reaching for me but I step back still too infuriated at him. His face falls slightly. "You're my wife, Nilsa. I won't leave you, I won't betray you. You need to trust me" Edward says sternly but there's a hence of desperation in his tone.
"I'll trust you when you can prove to me that you can be trusted," I tell him. "I don't need to be a mind reader to know what's going through your head when you're around her. They're certainly not innocent thoughts," I snapped. "Go to Denali, tell my sisters I miss and love them, get your head cleared and then come back to me. If whatever is starting to happen between you and this human continues, I swear Edward Cullen, I'll make your life a living hell." I promise before storming out of the room shoving my shoulder into his as I pass him.
I didn't have to turn back to know that Rose had followed me out of the parlor and into my bedroom. Edward was smart enough to pack some clothes before having the discussion. He knew the talk would anger me and I would refuse to let him into the room afterwards. I felt slightly disappointed because I was looking forward to denying him entry but after knowing someone for so long, you learn of their habits.
"I cannot believe him," I growled collapsing into a very comfortable chair in the corner by the windows and bookshelf. Rose closes the door behind her and sits in a chair adjacent from me. "You saw the looks they were giving each other, I'm not going crazy" I state but look towards her for some confirmation.
"The looks certainly we're subtle," Rose agrees. I growl gripping the arm rests. "I don't think you really have anything to worry about," Rose tells me. I glance towards her obviously wanting an explanation. "Bella's a human, Edward wouldn't be stupid enough to get involved with her. It's against the law and he's already married,"
My mind is over taken by thoughts. Only these thoughts weren't about Edward and the human, not exactly at least. Getting involved with a human is illegal in the vampire world and my mind went to the Volturi. I held back a whimper as I thought of the three kings.
"Shit, I'm so sorry, Nillie. I shouldn't have even brought it up," Rose says instantly. I had tried to hide the pain from my face but obviously I wasn't doing very well. I closed my eyes and scramble to collect myself but it's too late, my mind runs wild and I have no hope of taming it.
I vaguely hear Rose standing and leaving the room. I hardly notice Jasper picking me up from the chair and placing me in his lap. I cuddle close to him and he holds me tightly. I could feel him trying to control my emotions, trying to calm me down but it isn't so simple.
"It hurts," I sob wishing that Edward was here, despite being furious with him.
"I know, darlin'" Jasper whispers whilst slowly rocking me. I cried tearless sobs as the pain of the mating bond rips through my chest. The pain felt so intense I wondered how I would even get through it. This happened more often than I'd like to admit, each time it gets worse and worse.
My family, both the Denali and the Cullen's, have been a godsend. They pitied me, despite me telling them they shouldn't, but most of all they supported me. I knew I wasn't an easy person, I had obvious flaws and a broken past but not once did my family, either of them, send me away. Every time I fell, they would pick me back up and hug me tighter than ever before. I knew without them I wouldn't be able to handle this pain.
"Why does it have to be them, Jasper?" I whisper clinging to his shirt like a child. "Why couldn't it have been anyone else besides them?"
"I don't know, darlin', I don't know," He mutters into my hair. I knew I had to have been in his lap for at least a half an hour before I had the energy to talk. I knew it was a little while after that before Jasper could wrangle in my emotions and help me get in charge again. "No matter what happens, you still have a family," Jasper promises.
I didn't know if he was talking about Edward and Bella or my frequent episodes of excruciating pain, perhaps both, but I appreciated his words. I held onto him for most of the night simply too terrified of my own emotions to let go. Not to mention that Jasper simply is the best cuddler in the family.
Emmett had the best surprise hugs while Edward... well, he was good in other areas. Esme had the loving touch of a mother that both comforted me yet made me yearn for my real mother. I highly respected Carlisle but we often butted heads over certain aspects of my life, nonetheless I still loved him and everything he's done for me. Rosalie is, without a doubt, my favorite of my siblings. We both had similar deaths and views on humanity, although not identical. Alice, on the other hand, was harder for me to connect too. I felt protective of her and loved her personality but I never felt as if I could share everything with her. I always felt that she continuously hid things from me which created an invisible wall between us.
In short, I loved my family and everything they've done for me. I didn't know if I would ever be able to repay the favor but I would try. I just hope Edward will remain truthful and not screw everything up.
