Chapter One
It was hot, the sand burned under my bare feet, I don't remember how long I have been walking. His mind said it was here, I just couldn't find it. I looked around, nothing to be seen. I have this power, a power that I fear, a power that people can use if in the wrong hands. I can invade people's minds, find what I need by their brain wave and memory, or even kill them. I don't want to be like this anymore. The sand turned into grass, the sun wasn't as hot due to the cool breeze, I smelled rain. I was running but running from what? The ground was wet with red liquid, I know the color and smell, it was blood.
I darted upright from my bed; I was covered in sweat. I hate having flashbacks to those days.
"Ray, honey, time to get up, we have to get going." My mom's sweet voice came from behind my door. No matter what has happened, she loves me, like dad and my sister Abby.
"I'm coming mom." I said, I got up and changed into blue jean shorts, green tank top and white sneakers. I brushed my long messy brown hair
"Damn ouch." I said as I hit a huge knot, I quickly braided my hair and grabbed my green gym bag, putting it on. It had my phone, my charger, headphones and a book.
I ran into my dad as I exited my room, "Hello Sunshine Solider." My dad smiled and wrapped his arm around my shoulder going downstairs, my dad was an ex-marine ever since he lost his eye and one of his ears, he was home and always called me sunshine solider.
"Howdy Captain Dad." I smiled and hugged him around his waist.
A few hours later and after a breakfast my wonderful mom cooked us, we were on the road. I was riding with Abby in her red truck, listening to Panic at the disco, I looked out the window and smiled. A new start, that's what I needed.
"Hey, you excited ladybug?" She asked me, looking over at me. Her red hair in a messy bun, she always was dying her hair.
"Of course, butterfly, I get to help you make your pictures even better." I laughed, my sister was a photographer and she always asked me to help her with her pictures.
"I'm the one who takes the pictures, you are just the editor." She smirked; I rolled my eyes, I was very interested in photoshop and editing pictures, I also dabbled in drawing digital art, my parents bought me a digital drawing pad for my birthday, and it is one of my prize possessions
"Uh huh sure." We were silent, only the rushing wind from the open windows and the light sound of my music being up to high could be heard.
It was late afternoon when we arrived at our new cabin, it was miles away from my old house. The cabin was huge, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, two walk-in closets, a living room and a joined kitchen to have those dreamed dinner parties. A normal 21-year-old girls' life. I could work a job, maybe even go to college. I got out of the truck and felt something looking at me, looking into the dark woods, I saw something move.
"Rae! Let's go solider, unpack your bags." I looked away from the woods, the feeling was there and gone, must be nothing.
I looked around my room, it was themed as Paris, I looked on my bed and saw my wolf stuff animal, it was my calm plushie that I have had my whole life, I walked downstairs in my black jeans and my fall out boy shirt.
"Howdy Sunshine, what are you going to do today?" My dad asked me, mom and Abby were still sleeping, I was used to getting up early in the morning.
"Going to visit the town, maybe get a job or look for one." My dad's face quickly went from happy to concern.
"You um, sure about that one Ray? You can stay up here, explore the woods."
"No Dad, I want a normal life." I got a protein bar and a bottle of water, kissed his cheek and started walking down our huge driveway, we were on top of the hill, a couple of miles from the town. As I entered town, it was filled with so many people, I put my hands in my pockets and walked with my head down. I saw a help wanted sign at a restaurant window, Tille, I like that name. I walked into the restaurant, it had that warm and family owning business to it.
"Hello ma'am, would you like a booth or a table?" A young man came up to me from behind the register.
"Um, I am actually interested in the job wanted."
"Oh, it is waitressing job, I'll get Aunt Tille, please have a seat in the booth to your left." I nodded and walked to the booth, I looked out the window as a young woman came up to me, her raven hair was shoulder length, she was wearing a pink shirt, and light blue jeans with flip flops.
"Hiya, I'm Tille and I am the owner and best cook in the place, but don't tell my husband." She laughed and sat across from me, we smiled at each other.
"I'm Ray and I was wondering if I could get the job to be a waitress."
"Do you have any experience?"
"I do not, but I am willing to learn." She smiled at my answer.
"How old are you and why should I hire you?"
"I'm 21 and I think I could make a cheerful outcome to your company, I am determined, learn quickly and I can advertise your company with my technology skills." She looked at me, I could see she was thinking, her brown eyes full of wonder and something else, something wild.
"I like you, Ray, you are hired." I smiled and cheered.
"Thank you thank you! You won't regret it!" She smiled and held out her hand for a handshake, Oh shit. I couldn't deny my new bosses handshake to seal the deal, I reached out slowly, as a force of habit I had my pointer finger and middle finger on her wrist to feel her heartbeat. I felt my eyes roll into the back of my head, I saw a black figure in the distant it was very hazy, I couldn't tell what it was, past it was a memory of us shaking hands, I made my way past the memory as I reached out to the shadowy figure.
"Ray? Ray honey are you okay?" I was snapped out of it when she moved her hand.
"Um yeah, just excited and couldn't believe it was happening I guess." I laughed nervously. She nodded and motioned for me to follow her, we walked into a big kitchen area where a tall man, with brown hair and blue eyes was standing, he had a flannel shirt and blue jeans.
"Darling this is our new waitress Ray, Ray this is my husband Rick." He turned and smiled at me.
"A pleasure to meet you, I am happy to have you aboard." I nodded and walked past him following Tille.
"The boy you met was Shane, one of new members here. And this is my son, Alex." I looked at a man, who took my breath away, his eyes were light blue, lighter than his dad's, his hair was blacker than his mom's, he had a strong build to him as he was carrying a large load of dishes.
"U...umm he..hello." I stuttered, I haven't been around people my age for a long time, he looked to be in his twenties.
"Hi there, welcome aboard." His voice deep, his hair was slightly long, just above his ears and it covered the back of his neck, he held out his hand.
I slowly took it, I felt a slight warmth through my body, I saw in his mind, the same black figure behind the memory.
He looked at me, his eyes sparkling.
"I..I better go, I'll be able to start tomorrow Tille, see you at 8 am." I quickly walked out,
Okay, what just happened?
