Chapter 21
3 hours later...
Laura drags me downstairs and hugs me tight, probably scarring me in the process.
"Bye, Allison!" she yells cheerfully.
I wave goodbye as she walks out the front door. I shut the front door. It's 6:00, one hour before Laura's interview. I'm nervous for school tomorrow, I'm hoping they don't look up my records and my past relations. I also hope that Laura's word choices are eloquent enough so the FBI don't suspect anything. I run to the kitchen and make a pizza. Then, I run to my room and watch the news. Kennedy calls me. I answer.
"Hey, Kennedy!" I yell.
"OMG ALLI!" She yells in reply.
"Watch the news with me, come over!" I exclaim loudly.
"Okay, I don't know Laura's address," she mutters.
I chuckle. "6675 Barnyard Street."
"Wow!" Kennedy exclaims, "I'm dumb!"
Kennedy instantly hangs up without a warning, petrifying me and making me call her again but she laughed and hung up again.
"About the ISIS situation in Hungary, France and Germany...," the news lady starts just as Kennedy knocks on the door.
I sprint down to the door in a rush, opening it for her.
"THE NEWS!" Kennedy exclaims, following me as we sprint up the stairs.
"We are now visiting the very place where Dan Martinez used to work, the police station. We are now interviewing his old friend, Officer Laura Clark," the news lady says, "Now, Officer Clark, did you know that Dan's daughter was abused?
Laura pauses for a moment. "Well, I was sending something was a little odd between them, but I didn't know what. Allison was always reserved, even before her mother died. Also, I never really saw her."
"Why didn't you report it?" the news lady asked in shock.
"I was never over. Allison never told me anything, before Dan was caught by her best friend, Kennedy," Laura replies politely.
The news lady gasps. "Why didn't you ever spy on her?"
Laura takes a deep breath, obviously extremely irate by the news lady's actions. "I have the night shifts. I'm always on duty, or taking care of cases for people's safety. It's my duty to keep people safe."
The news lady says, "But this is your duty."
Laura snickers under her breath, "Maybe it was. Now, it certainly is."
"Who's her new legal guardian?" the news lady asks.
"Me," Laura mutters, "I am."
"Why so?" the news lady asks, trying to persuade Laura into following her lead.
Laura pauses, baffled by the news lady's choice of questions. They all seem to be pointing the finger at Laura.
"Oh, no," I mutter.
"Laura's being criticized," Kennedy mutters.
Our eyes shirt from the news lady, to each other, and then to Laura uncomfortably, as I take a bite of pizza. Kennedy does, too.
"Well, everything makes a little bit of sense. I think Allison wanted it," Laura mutters, holding her hand to her heart lovingly.
That's a good way to handle this situation. Laura's very eloquent in the way she speaks. She puts on her mask, making her seem more classy then she usually is. Laura is classy normally, but whenever she has her mask on, she says everything so lyrically like a poet. Maybe a nature poet, like Robert Frost.
Kennedy gasps as the news lady looks at Laura as weirdly as anybody has looked at me. The news lady looked her up and down and up and then back down.
"Are you okay?" Laura asks unsteadily.
"Yes," the news lady snickers, "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Sorry, ma'am, just wondering," Laura announces.
The news lady looks at her weirdly. "Shouldn't you go work on your next case?"
"Yes, ma'am, I better work on this case," Laura says politely.
"Alright then. We are on Channel 32, working in case 33, of Allison Martinez's abuse and thank you Laura for taking your time and letting us ask you questions," the news lady says, standing up from her seat, announcing it to the world.
Kennedy and I looked at the almost untouched pizza. We both took another bite. Kennedy turns off the television, laughing her head off.
"The apocalypse has come," Kennedy says to the pizza, "The new world for you guys is in our stomachs."
I laugh. "It's nice hosting a hang out! I haven't really done it in years... Well without sneaking it, of course."
Kennedy laughs. "I haven't seen you laugh sense you were nine."
"I know you're right," I mumble.
I feel more confident now, now that Kennedy can come over without climbing through my bedroom window. Boyfriends, I've heard they're magical. Ever since I got one, I've learned that they are. But, best friends are tons better. They will always be with you and stick by you no matter what. Always putting cucumbers on our eyes and guacamole, not avocados on our face. We bought guacamole with onions and put it on our faces, making us cry loudly, with Kennedy's mom walking into the room, shocked.
Kennedy takes a huge gulp of pizza, just as we hear Laura run into the house.
"Allison?" she asks as she runs into my room.
As soon as she sees Kennedy, her mouth drops open.
"And this must be your best friend?" Laura asks.
I nod uncomfortably. She shakes Kennedy's hand quickly before saying, "Thank you for saving Allison."
Kennedy says, "You're very welcome."
Kennedy bows, then falls down. Laura chuckles then leaves the room, leaving us just talking and wolfing down pizza.
