Chapter 20
I walk inside Laura's house.
"Allison?" Laura asks.
I pause for a moment before saying, "Hi."
Laura runs downstairs in her black pumps, making incredibly loud noises. "How was your date?"
I pause and shake my head. "It wasn't a date, perhaps."
Laura laughs and puts her hand on my shoulder. "Don't deny it, Allison."
I laugh in reply. "I think it was."
Laura drags me upstairs and shows me this big bedroom. "This is your room."
I shake my head. "I can just sleep on the couch, I don't need it."
Laura laughs then looks at me sternly. "This is yours. Make yourself at home."
I nod, grateful for her generosity and walk into my bedroom. I stare at it with awe, looking at the couch, the bed, the bathroom, and the television. It looks like a paradise! I know I don't need this much space and I probably won't use all of this space, but I'm glad she's letting me use it. The room smells like a mixture of Febreeze and bleach. I love the smell of cleaning products. It just makes me want to live here. Wait... I live here now.
I don't know what will happen with Father's house, but I'm hopeful that he'll be arrested. And, I don't know if I have to go to his trial, meet with the jury, and discuss things with the judge and all of that.
I get a text.
Kennedy: OMG! Alli! Look at the TV Channel 32!
Me: Ummm... Okay?
I look at the TV and turn it on. It automatically turns itself on to the news station, or channel 32.
The news lady says, "Father abuses daughter for more than a year..."
I text Kennedy.
Me: Oh I wasn't expecting this.
Kennedy: Well, your dad might get arrested. :-)
Me: I'm so embarrassed.
Kennedy: XD
Me: *rolls eyes*
I put down my phone.
"Dan Martinez waiting for trial," the lady on the news continues, "Let our news reporter in Houston, Texas explain this crisis."
I get a text from Ellie.
Ellie: R U WATCHING THIS?!
Me: Uh... yes.
I text Joe real quick.
Me: Goodness, Joe. I'm on television!
Joe: I know. I'm watching it now.
Just how?!
The news reporter from Houston shows up on the screen. "I am awaiting his trial, watching Dan Martinez get arrested right in front of my eyes."
I see Father, twisting, turning and fighting the police officers. I gasp in shock. It's taken them this long?! He shrieks with terror but also has an evil look on his face. I know he's faking that shriek.
"Tomorrow is school," I mutter anxiously, "What on Earth will happen to me?"
The man on the news announces, "We are looking for close relatives to Dan Martinez, currently, the only ones we have found are his wife, Karen Mitchell, who is currently deceased, and his daughter, Allison Martinez, who is the victim of the incident."
The lady on the news asks, "So, it would be inappropriate to ask the victim or would it get us what we need?"
The man nods. "Yes, Sandra, it might as well be. But, if we do chose to let her sit in on Dan's trial, she might be able to tell if he is lying."
Sandra nods in reply, "Well, Allison might be our only bet. We might as well use one of her closest friends. Or, one of Dan's closest friends. Like Officer Clark. She might know what's going on. She's on call for police duty tonight at 7, so we could interview her then. Brandon, what do you think on this opinion?"
Brandon pauses for a moment. "Well, Sandra, Officer Clark will be interviewed. But, about Allison, I think she needs another person with her. Even though, we should interview Dan's colleagues in a few days. We need to know how long Dan abused his daughter and what happened because of it. We need records. We need exact records. And Dan, I won't rely on him."
I see Father being pushed into a police car while another officer is putting him into handcuffs. Father squirms and looks into the cameras.
"YOU'RE FILMING THIS?!" he asks angrily.
Sandra sighs. "I'm so sorry, viewers."
Father's endless cursing is censored out of the news.
Brandon announces, "Thank you for watching News Hour 32, we will be back tonight."
Oh no, no, no... I shake my head in denial. "This can't be."
It takes me a moment to realize I'm still standing, so I take a seat on the couch. Then, I realize I still smell like hospital. I take off my shoes by the bathroom door. I walk into the bathroom. It's nice and large. I see a bath, a shower, a toilet, a cabinet, and a closet. I take a nice, warm, shower in peace, without any glasses crashing. I wash my hair and then walk out of the shower. I get dressed in a brand new set of clothes, then tie my hair in a ponytail. I hear a knock at my bedroom door. I open it. Laura stands there, looking into my eyes.
"Allison?" she asks, "Did you watch the news?"
I nod.
"I'm on call tonight. I have to go in a few hours. Is that alright?" Laura asks sweetly.
"Or course," I say in reply.
A smile forms on Laura's face. She walks into my room. "Everything alright?"
I nod slowly, smiling back at her. She leads me over to the couch, where we both sit down.
"Now," Laura starts, "I have a few questions for you."
I nod. "Okay. Shouldn't you wait until after the interview?"
Laura laughs. "You're probably right."
I laugh as well.
Laura asks, "When there's anything going on, will you tell me?"
I nod.
Laura says, "I know this sounds terrible, but pretty soon we gotta walk into your old house again."
I laugh. "It's not bad at all."
"Good."
