CHAPTER TEN

The two hunters get to where Sam is and they see an ambulance outside the gun store. The pair find Sam as fast as they can, and find out that the guy from his vision is dead. Only, he didn't shoot himself. He walked in front of a bus.

"I kept him out of the gun store." Sam says as Dean kneels down beside where he's sitting. "I thought he was okay. I thought he was passed it. At least... I should've stayed with him."

The three hunters start walking again, and Dean quickly points out the Impala when he sees it parked. "Thank God." He says as they walk over to it. "I'm sorry, Baby. I'll never leave you again."

"Unless you get Obi-Wan'd again." Nyx teases, and he looks at her.

"You're not funny."

"Comedy's subjective." She smiles, and he shakes his head at her.

"At least he left the keys in it."

"Yeah. Real samaritan, this guy." Sam says sarcastically.

"It looks like he can't work his mojo just by twitching his nose. He's got to use verbal commands." Dean says as he walks over to his brother and Nycole.

"The doctor had just gotten off his cellphone when he stepped in front of that bus." The younger boy sighs. "Andy must've called him or something."

"I don't know. Maybe."

"Beg your pardon?" Sam questions.

"I just don't know if this is our guy, Sam." Dean says.

"Dean, you had O.J. convicted before he got out of his white bronco, and you have doubts about this?"

"He doesn't seem like the stone-cold killer type. That's all." He says. "And O.J. was guilty."

"He's right. The guy might be a bit of a klepto, but I'm just not seeing murderer." Nyx tells him.

"Either way, how are we gonna track this guy down?" Sam asks.

"Not a problem." Dean then walks back over to the car.

"Not exactly an inconspicuous ride. Let's have a look." Dean says as he opens the back door of Andy's van.

It has some interesting stuff inside — a bed, a disco ball, beads hanging from the ceiling. It doesn't look like a murder's lair, or the home of anyone even remotely evil. Certainly not what Sam was expecting to find inside of Andy's van.

"This is— This is magnificent, that's what this is." Dean says, highly amused, and Nyx shakes her head at him. "Not exactly a serial killer's lair though. There's no clown paintings on the walls or scissors stuck in victims photos. I like the tiger." He points at the picture on the wall.

"Hegel? Kant? Wittgenstein?" Sam says as he looks at the many different books. "That's some pretty heavy reading."

"Yeah, and, uh..." He picks something up. "Moby Dick's bong." Dean says, and Nyx looks at it.

"Damn." She mumbles.

The hunters then go back to the Impala to wait for Andy to come back. The three of them are parked just around the corner, semi hiding from his view.

Dean, of course, got food first. "You know, one day I'd love to just sit down and eat something that I didn't have to microwave at a mini-mart." He says as he throws his trash in the backseat to the right of Nyx, behind his brother. "I miss your cooking." He reaches back and his fingers graze over Nyx's thigh.

The brunette smiles as she leans forward and wraps her arms around his shoulders, her head now resting against his. "I'll have to make something the next time we're in Mystic Falls." She tells him, and he smiles.

"Damn it, woman. You're not supposed to make me want to go back there." He says, and she chuckles.

"What I don't get is motive." Sam says suddenly, looking over papers for the case. He's not paying any attention to his brother and Nyx. "I mean, the doctor was squeaky clean. Why would anyone want to waste him?"

"If it is Andy." Dean says as Nyx sighs, sitting back in her seat properly.

"Dude, enough."

"What?"

"The doctor was mind controlled in front of a bus. Andy just happens to have the power of mind control. You do the math." Sam says, obviously getting annoyed with his brother.

"What's not adding up for me is why you're so quick to throw Andy under the bus." Nyx pauses for a second, and he looks at her. "No pun intended. I swear, I didn't do that on purpose."

He just shakes his head as he turns back around in his seat.

"I just don't think the guy has it in him, that's all." Dean tells him.

"Well, how the hell would you know? I mean, why are you bending over backwards defending him?" Sam questions.

"'Cause you're not right about this."

"About Andy?"

"Hey!" Someone slams their hand on the roof of the car, and Nyx sees Andy lean down at Sam's window. "You think I haven't seen you three? Why are you following me?" He asks, and she just looks at him.

"Well, we're lawyers. A relative of yours had—"

"Tell the truth." Andy cuts Sam off, his voice sounding a little different now.

"That's—"

"We hunt demons." Dean says, and Nyx puts her hand over her mouth so that she won't say anything.

"What?" Andy questions.

"Dean—"

"Demons and spirits. Things your worst nightmares wouldn't even touch." He cuts his brother off, and Sam looks back at Nyx. He's beyond confused as he glances between the two of them. "Sam, here's my brother, and that's my girl back there."

"Dean, shut up." Sam says as he looks back at Andy.

"I'm trying. I'm trying." He says, and Nyx pushes her hand harder over her mouth to keep quiet as she sinks into her seat. "He's psychic, like you. Well, not really like you. He thinks you're a murderer, and he's afraid he's gonna become one himself 'cause you're all part of something that's terrible. I hope to hell that he's wrong, but I'm starting to get a little scared that he might be right."

"Okay, you know what?" Andy looks between the three of them. "Just leave me alone, okay. Alright?"

"Alright." Dean sighs and puts his head in his hand as Sam gets out of the car.

Nyx takes a deep breath as she closes her eyes, still not removing her hand from her mouth.

"Thanks for the help." Dean says as he looks back at Nyx.

"My head hurts." She mumbles. "So does my lip. I think I cut it." She says as she moves her hand and checks for blood.

The two get out of the car and start walking over to Sam and Andy. "You can make people do things, can't you? You can tell them what to think?" Sam asks, holding his hand up to tell the other two to stay back. The mind control doesn't seem to work on him like it does on them.

"Okay, that's crazy." Andy says, clearly freaked out by Sam.

"It all started about a year ago, didn't it?" Sam asks. "After you turned twenty-two? Little stuff at first, then you got better at controlling it?"

"How do you know all this?"

"'Cause the same thing happened to me, Andy." He tells him. "My mom died in a fire too. I have abilities too. See, we're connected — you and me."

"No, just—" He stutters. "Just get out of here, alright!" He tries to get away from Sam.

"Why did you tell the doctor to walk in front of a bus?" Sam asks as he follows him; Dean and Nyx move a little closer.

"What?" Andy asks, confused, and then turns away from him.

"Why did you kill him?" He asks, looking back at Andy.

"I didn't." He insists, and Sam tilts his head to the side.

"Does that look similar to what happened in Michigan to you?" Nycole quietly asks Dean.

"I don't know, maybe." He says.

"It is." She says, and they both quickly run over to Sam as he turns.

Dean grabs his brother. "Sam? What is it?"

"I didn't do anything to him." Andy says as Dean helps his brother sit on the floor.

"A woman." Sam says as Andy and Nyx both kneel down. "A woman burning alive."

"What else did you get?" Dean asks.

"A gas station. A woman is gonna kill herself." He tells them.

"What does he mean, going to?" Andy questions.

"Shut up." Dean and Nyx snap at him.

"She gets triggered by a call on her cell." Sam says.

"When?" She asks him.

"I don't know." He says as he gets to his feet. "As long as we keep our eyes on this son of a bitch, he can't hurt her."

"I didn't hurt anybody." Andy defends himself.

"Not yet."

"Guys." Nyx gets their attention when she hears a siren. They all turn and see a firetruck driving by. "Come on, we gotta go." She quickly pulls Dean back toward the Impala, and they leave Sam with Andy.

They follow the firetruck and end up at a gas station, just like Sam said. Dean calls his brother after they see the woman's burned up body on the ground laying in front of a gas bump.

The couple get as much information as they can, and then head back to talk to Sam and Andy. They pull up and the other two walk over to the car. Dean starts getting out, and her phone rings.

"Go, I have to talk to my sister." Nyx tells him, and he nods as he goes to tell them what they found. "Hey. How are you doing?"

"Okay, I guess. How are you?" Elena asks.

"Still haven't really processed it yet. We have a pretty complicated case, and I'm using it as a distraction." She tells her.

"Is everything okay?"

"That remains to be seen." Nyx sighs. "How is everyone?"

"Everyone's pissed at Stefan, and Care's furious at Tyler." She tells her.

"At Tyler? Why?"

"He injected her with vervain so that she couldn't help us."

"He did what?" She questions as the boys all get in the car. Sam and Andy are in the backseat.

"He says he was trying to protect her — something about the sire bond."

"I'm seriously gonna have to kick his ass next time I see him. I don't give a damn about some sire bond." She says as Dean starts driving.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Elena asks.

"No." She snaps and then sighs as she puts her hand over her face. "I'm sorry, Elena. It, uh... It's all just a lot. I mean, Mikael's dead, Klaus is... And we're supposed to be able to trust Tyler. Now we can't trust him or Stefan. I mean..."

"I know." She says.

"Can I call you back later?" Nyx asks, and she agrees.

"What's going on?" Dean asks when she stuffs her phone back into her pocket, and she glances back at Andy. "Don't worry about him."

"The plan didn't work." She tells him.

"What plan?" Sam asks, she never told him what was going on in Mystic Falls.

"They had a way to kill Klaus — a White Oak stake. It's the only way to kill an original because it was carved from the same tree that the original witch used to create them."

"Well, what happened?" Dean asks.

"Mikael — Klaus' father— Er, I guess just Elijah and Rebekah's father..." She shakes her head. "Anyway, he had a stake — the only one that we know about because they torched the tree a thousand years ago... Mikael was going to use it to kill Klaus, but Stefan stopped Damon from using it. Damon said that he did it to regain his freedom from Klaus." She tells them.

"Wouldn't he have been freed from the compulsion after Klaus was dead? I thought an original's compulsion wears off after they die."

She shrugs. "I don't know, it doesn't make any sense."

"And what did Tyler do?" Sam asks.

"Sidelined Caroline. He vervained her so she couldn't help them."

"Because of the sire bond?"

"Don't know. Don't care."

"So, Klaus is still alive?" Dean asks, and she nods.

"And I'm still his blood bag." She tells him, and he glances at his girlfriend.

"Nobody's gonna hurt you, babe." He says as he leans over and rests his hand on her leg for a second. She just looks out the window at everything that's passing by.

It turns out that Andy was adopted and he has a twin brother that he didn't know about. And then this twin just so happens to be a guy that Andy actually knows. He used to work with him, but he didn't know that they were brothers before about an hour ago. He just showed up one day out of the blue and inserted himself into Andy's life, like they were already friends. He changed his name and never told Andy who he really was.

Sam had a vision of Andy's ex-girlfriend killing herself — jumping off a bridge. He said that it looked wrong, that she seemed like she was being controlled. The hunters, of course, assume that it's Andy's estranged twin brother. They now have a plan to try to stop him and save her.

Sam and Andy are saving the poor girl, and Dean and Nyx are going to watch from a distance. He has a sniper rifle, and he'll be ready in case they need any extra help. Nyx is basically just gonna watch through binoculars. She hates not being down there to help Sam, but it would be even worse if she and Dean get mind controlled by Andy's brother.

They make it to a good vantage point and look down to see what's happening. Sam got knocked out, and the girl climbed up onto the ledge of the bridge. Andy's now talking to his brother.

Dean then cocks the rifle, and Andy's brother turns around, almost like he heard it click. Nyx sees his mouth moving, but she has no idea what he's saying. Then the next thing she knows, Dean's turning to face her.

Nyx quickly takes a step back as he aims the rifle at her. "Dean." She holds her hands up in front of her, dropping the binoculars to the dirt. It seems Andy's brother doesn't need the same verbal commands that he does. "Hey, listen to me, Dean. Try to fight it."

"I am." He says through clenched teeth, as the rifle shakes in his hands. He's doing everything in his power to aim the rifle anywhere else, but he's not in control over his own body.

A gunshot rings out, and Nyx flinches as she screws her eyes shut, but she's not hit. Dean immediately lowers the gun, and they both look back over at Andy and his brother.

"Oh my God." Nyx mutters when she sees Andy holding a gun, and his brother's now on the ground.

"Baby." Dean suddenly pulls her to him and kisses the side of her head as he wraps his arms tightly around her, no longer holding the gun. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." His voice is low as he holds her tightly in his arms.

"Now I know what Elena and Stefan were going through in the gym." Nyx mumbles as she hugs him, her hands now balled up around the back of his shirt. "Mind control sucks."

"I thought I was gonna pull the trigger."

"Babe..." Nyx pulls back and looks up at him, he now has tears welled up in his eyes. "Hey, it's okay. Everything's okay now." She says as she reaches up wipes the tears from his cheeks.

"I almost—"

"But you didn't, Dean. You didn't." She shakes her head. "Baby, I'm okay. Our little gremlins are okay. We're all fine."

He leans down and kisses her, and she wraps her arms around his neck. "I'm sorry." He repeats as he hugs her. "I'm so sorry."

"It's not your fault, baby." She says, her voice low as she hugs him. "We're okay, and nothing's gonna change that." She tells him, and he buries his face in her neck. "We're all okay."

In the morning, Andy deals with the police who show up — he mind controls them into believing that his brother shot himself and they all watched it happen. His ex-girlfriend is in the back of an ambulance now, and she's going to be just fine.

Sam's sitting on the ground, and Dean's leaning against a wall close by. He has Nyx against him, with her back to his chest and his arms wrapped securely around her. Her head's resting on his shoulder and their fingers are intertwined. He leans down to kiss her cheek, and she smiles as she rests her head against his.

Andy walks over to them then, and Nyx lifts her head so that she can look at him. "She won't even look at me." He tells them, referring to his ex. He pretty clearly still has feelings for her.

"Yeah, she's pretty shaken up." Sam says.

"No, it's— This is different. This is, uh..." He stammers. "I never used my mind thing on her before- before last night. She's scared of me now."

Nyx offers him a sympathetic look as Dean pushes off the wall so they're standing up straight, but he doesn't let go of her. What happened last night bothers him more than it does her, and he's still a little rattled by the image of her standing in front of him in fear of what he would do.

"Andy, I hate to do this, but, uh... We have to get out of here." Sam tells him. "Here. I wrote down my cell. You don't have to be alone in this, alright." He hands Andy a piece of paper. "If anything comes up, you can call me."

"Hey, uh..." Nyx starts, and Andy looks over at her. "I don't want to say thank you, because that doesn't really feel right, considering..." She looks back toward where he shot his brother last night. "But you saved my life and my babies, so, uh..."

"Yeah." He nods.

Dean lets go of her, but his hand finds hers again as they start walking toward the car.

"Wh— What am I supposed to do now?" Andy asks, and they all look back at him.

"Be good, Andy." Dean tells him. "Or we'll be back."

"Looks like I was right." Sam says after they start walking again.

"About what?"

"Andy. He's a killer after all."

"No, he's a hero." Dean refutes. "He saved his girlfriend's life. He saved Nycole's life. Hell, he saved mine. If I done anything to her, I'd have just taken myself out right after. I can't—"

"Yeah, let's not talk about this anymore." She cuts him off, wrapping her arms around his torso as they keep walking. "Bad, bad, all bad."

"Bottom line, last night he wasted somebody." Sam argues.

"Yeah, but he's not a foaming-at-the-mouth psycho. He was just— He was pushed into that." His brother tells him.

"Webber was pushed too. In his own way. Max Miller was pushed. Hell, I was pushed by Jessica's death."

"What's your point, Sam?" He asks, and they stop walking.

"Right circumstances, everyone's capable of murder. Everyone. Maybe that's what the demon is doing — pushing us. Finding ways to break us." He says, and Nyx sighs.

"Sam, we don't know what the demon wants, okay?" His brother says. "Quit worrying about it." He pulls Nyx with him as he starts walking.

"You know, I heard you before, Dean." Sam says. "When Andy made you tell the truth. You're just as scared of this as I am."

"That was mind control." Dean argues. "It's like being roofied, man. That doesn't count."

"What?"

"No. No, I'm calling do-over."

"What are you, seven?" Sam questions.

"Doesn't matter. We just got to keep doing what we're doing, find that evil son of a bitch, and kill it."

"Yeah, I guess."

"Can we just get in the damn car please?" Nyx asks.

"You're driving." Dean tosses the keys to his brother as his phone starts ringing.

He tells them that Ellen wants them back at the bar. He gets in the backseat with Nyx, and that's where Sam takes them.

"So, uh, you want to tell me about this last hunt of yours?" Ellen asks after sending Jo to the back. She and Carter are behind the bar, both facing them.

"Nope. Not really. No offense. Just kind of a family thing." Dean says as he looks at her, raising his beer to his lips.

"Not anymore. I got this stuff from Ash." She tosses some papers on the counter in front of them; it's the same information that he gave them the last time they were there. "Andrew Gallagher's house burned down on his six-month birthday, just like your house. You think it was the demon both times, don't you? You think it went after Gallagher's family?"

"Yeah, we think so." Sam tells her.

"Sam." Dean warns.

"Why?" Ellen asks.

"None of your business."

"You mind your tongue with me, boy. This isn't just your war. This is war." She says, and Nyx reaches over and rests her hand on Dean's leg, knowing that he's going to get mad. "Something big and bad is coming, and it's coming fast, and their side holds all the cards. Now, at best, all we got is us — together. No secrets or half-truths here."

"We're trying to look out for you guys." Carter says, and Nyx looks at him.

"There are people out there like Andy Gallagher..." Sam says. "Like me... And, um... We all have some kind of ability."

"Ability?" Ellen asks.

"Yeah. A psychic ability." He tells her, and his brother shakes his head.

Nyx squeezes Dean's leg, and he looks at her for a second.

"Me, I have, um..." Sam continues. "I have visions... Premonitions. I don't know. It's different for everybody. The demon said he had plans for people like us."

"What kind of plans?" Carter asks, and Dean leans toward Nycole.

"You trust this guy?" He whispers in her ear.

"Yes, I do." She says and then kisses his cheek, hoping he'll relax a little.

"We don't really know for sure." Sam answers Carter.

"These people out there, these psychics, are they dangerous?" Ellen asks.

"No." Dean says as he turns back to look at her. "Not all of them."

"But some are." Sam says. "Some are very dangerous."

"How many of them are there?" Ellen looks between the three of them.

"We've been able to track a clear pattern so far." Dean tells her. "They've all had house fires on the night of the kid's six-month birthday."

"That's not true." Sam says, and they all look at him.

"What?" Nyx asks, confused.

"Webber or Ansem Weems—" Andy's twin brother. "—or whatever his name is... I looked at his files, and there was no house fire. There's nothing out of the ordinary." He says as Jo walks behind the bar.

"Which breaks the pattern." Carter says.

"So, if there's any others like him, there would be nothing in the system, no way to track them all down." Ellen says.

"And so who knows how many of them are really out there." Nyx says, and Dean looks at her.

"Jo, honey."

"Yeah?" She asks.

"You better break out the Whiskey instead."
