Chapter 34

"Saffanah, there is something we must tell you, honey," Diana said gently. Rook sat at the edge of the bed, laying comfortably down. Jeremy was sitting on the right side of Saffanah while Diana was on the otherside. Saffanah cocked her head.
               "What is it?" she asked.
"Well. The job is secured now," said Jeremy. "And there is something that you're going to have to give up..., when we're going to be moving."
"What is it? Is it Bunny? Or Teddy? Or Rexy?" said Saffanah, motioning to her stuffed animals in the corner of her room.
"Ah no. You'll be able to bring them with you, don't worry," Jeremy told her. She smiled happily.
"Yay. Did you hear that Rook? We'll be able to bring Teddy, Bunny and Rexy with us!" exclaimed Saffanah, talking to Rook. Rook glanced up and smiled. He twitched his tail.
"That's great," he told her. She ran her fingers through his soft fur. He let her, purring softly to tell her that he liked it.
"Mmmm, about that," Jeremy said slowly. He glanced at Diana for help. She nodded that he go on.
"Well..., Rook won't be able to come with us," blurted Jeremy. Rook's ears pricked. He frowned and he stared at Jeremy. His mouth was agape slightly. Had he heard right?
"W-what?" he stammered, confused. Saffanah's eyes went wide.
"What?!" She burst out, pushing her mother's hand away.
"I'm sorry honey," sighed Jeremy. "I understand that you're upset but-"
"Why can't we bring him?! I'm not going if Rook's not going!" cried Saffanah. Rook agreed. He would gladly live with Saffanah in the house alone. Domino would come and visit them sometimes.
"I'm sorry dear, cats aren't allowed where we are going to live and I don't think Rook is going to appreciate the long flight," explained Diana.
"I don't care. Then I'm not going," said Saffanah.
"We're going, we can't change that," said Jeremy. "I'm sorry honey. I really am. Rook is part of this family."
"Yeah, so we're going to leave him?" snapped Saffanah, almost in tears. Rook frowned, he dug his claws into the blanket. He wanted to rush to Domino's and tell him all about it. He didn't want to be left behind. He couldn't be left behind. This was his family. How could they leave him?
"I'm so sorry honey," sighed Diana. "The housing area we're living in have a strict rule for pets."
"No. No. I'm not leaving Rook. I don't want to go," said Saffanah firmly. Jeremy cast Diana a look. Rook glared at them, feeling just as defiant as Saffanah. If they were going, he was going with them. He didn't know where, but he didn't care. As long as he was with them.
"Honey, we've got to go. It's a job of a lifetime, plus, everything has been planned," Jeremy said firmly.
"Except the part that we take him with us!" exclaimed Saffanah angrily.
"Sorry honey," said Jeremy. "I really really am."
"Yeah we're really sorry. But we're going to find Rook the best home possible. And we can come visit him," promised Diana.
"No," cried Saffanah, in tears. Rook slipped under her arm and cuddled nearer to her. She gripped him, keeping him close. "We can't leave him. We can't leave him. No."
"I'm so sorry honey," said Diana softly. "So sorry." She attempted to give Saffanah a hug but Saffanah pushed her away.
"I don't want to talk to you. Go away!" screamed Saffanah. Jeremy tried to talk to her but she yelled over him. Finally, Diana and Jeremy retreated from her room, closing her door behind them gently. Saffanah cried into Rook's fur. He let her, feeling her love. He wanted to stay with her forever. He would follow them. Wherever they were going, he was going to follow them. He had to. He couldn't leave Saffanah. What was she going to do without him?
"I'm never going to leave you," Saffanah said. An empty promise.
