Chapter 32

"Guess what?!" yelled Jeremy, bursting into the house. Rook jolted awake. He was asleep on the first step of the stairs. He shook himself and trotted towards the front door. Saffanah, who had been drawing on the dinner table, jumped off the chair and rushed to her father. Diana glanced up from her book on the couch.
"What?" cried Saffanah, rushing into her father's arms.
"Did you get it?" Diana asked excitedly, her eyes sparkling. Jeremy picked Saffanah off the ground and grinned. Rook listened, interested. This seemed like very big news.
"Yes! Yes!" exclaimed Jeremy. "Yes, I got it! I got the promotion!" Diana jumped off the couch and kissed Jeremy. Jeremy then lift Saffanah up in the air and they spun. Saffanah threw her head back and raised her hands. She let out a happy whoop. Rook smiled, his tail held high.
"Oh my gosh! I'm so proud of you. I'm- I knew you'd get it!" Diana smiled and hugged Saffanah and Jeremy.
"I rushed back as soon as I got the news! It's going to be great. I promise you. We're going to have a great house. There will be a big garden. We will even have a nice little driveway and we can decorate it with whatever you guys one. We'll even have a pool!" Jeremy said. Saffanah cheered.
"Yay! A pool! I can swim with Rook now!" cried Saffanah.
"We need to celebrate!" cried Diana.
"Yes, how about we go to our favourite restaurant," suggested Jeremy, winking.
"Yes! Yes! Yes!" shouted Saffanah. The family turned around and walked out of the house, hands linked and laughing happily. Rook watched, tilting his head. He was happy to see his family like that. It hurt him slightly that he couldn't go, or that they didn't say goodbye.
"Bye, have fun," Rook called behind them, but, of course, they didn't hear him. Rook padded into the kitchen and started at the hard bits that were his dinner. He sighed. He wanted to try more. He wanted to eat human food. It smelled delicious. He wanted to try something warm, juicy and tasty, like a mouse. He didn't want to have these hard bits of food anymore. It was time that he ate something good. With a small smile, he trotted out of the house and headed for Domino's house. When he reached, Domino was in the attic, cleaning himself.
"Hey," said Domino as Rook slipped inside.
"Hey, you hungry?" asked Rook. Domino's ears perked up.
"Yes, always," smiled Domino, looking up.
"Then let's find food," said Rook.
"What do you mean?" frowned Domino. "I thought, when you asked me that question, that you already had something in mind. Like the food at your house."
"The food at my house? Please, I hate it," huffed Rook.
"At least it isn't multicoloured," sighed Domino.
"Do you want to find good food with me or not?" asked Rook.
            "how and where?" answered Domino.
            "Dumpster?" suggested Rook. "Hunting?"
"Since when can we hunt?" exclaimed Domino in exasperation. "And the dumpsters are like the most dangerous places in the world. There are stray dogs and cat gangs. Not the dumpsters."
"Then can we raid your kitchen?" asked Rook. Domino sighed.
"Sure, but only if you managed to pry open the fridge or the snack cupboard," Domino said. "I've been trying for months."
"Let's do it!" grinned Rook. Together, they made their way to the kitchen. Domino's family was gone, along with the dog. Rook leapt onto the counter and Domino cringed.
"We aren't allowed on there," he said. Rook made a face.
"There's nobody here to stop us," Rook said pointedly. He sniffed about. "MMmm, smells like good food."
"Yeah and it's not ours," added Domino.
"Come on, get up here," said Rook. With a small shake of the head, Domino leapt onto the counter. They sniffed around and Domino showed Rook the snack cupboard.
"I've seen many snacks come out of here," said Domino. "How are we going to open it?"
"Maybe it's a bit like the cage at the farm," Rook said thoughtfully.
"Yes!" exclaimed Domino. "Maybe. Go on, try and open it." Rook stared at it for another moment then pawed at the metal thing sticking out of the wood. The cupboard door moved but it did not open.
"Maybe...," Rook pushed his paw down, the metal bit did not move. He sighed. He tried fiddling with it. Finally, Rook managed to snap back the metal thing. The door swung open, ajar. Domino stared, his mouth wide open, his eyes sparkling.
"Oh my gosh, the moment I've been waiting for my whole life. The snack cupboard is open! Let's feast!" exclaimed Domino. Rook took in the delicious smell of food. They started to pull out packets of food, some of it tumbled out onto the ground. Rook and Domino leapt down and started licking up the crumbs of cookies, small cakes, popcorn and cereal. Rook had never tasted anything quite like it. The tastes burst into his mouth. It was crunchy but easy to chew. Everything had a different and unique taste.
"Wow!" said Rook. The two cats pilaged the cupboard, digging up as much food as they could. Some packets fell onto the ground and food tumbled out of it. Other packets were closed and no matter what the two cats did, there was no opening the packets. Finally, Rook was stuffed and Domino was laying on the ground, burping.
"I'm full but I can't seem to stop," said Rook, taking a bite of a potato chip. Suddenly, there was a click. Rook stopped and leapt to his feet. He listened hard. Domino did the same. The cats stared at the front door. They heard the faint sound of crying and the loud steps of a four-legged animal. There was some muffled talking. Rook and Domino shot each other looks.
"They're back," Rook said unnecessarily. "Let's get out of here." They didn't argue. The shot upstairs to the attic. Rook slipped out and after him went Domino. As they balanced on the wooden beam, they heard the family enter the house.
"Oh my God! Phil! The kitchen!" came a loud pitched voice.
"What is it honey? I'm trying to-" Phil said. "WHAT THE HE-" Rook and Domino were already leaping over the fence and rushing back to Rook's house.
"Wow," laughed Rook, collapsing on the ground outside his house. "That was fun."
"I know," smiled Domino. "I hope I don't get in trouble."
"What are they going to do?" asked Rook. "They didn't see us do it, so they don't know that it was us. Plus, they think we don't understand what they say. They won't even bother scolding you." Domino nodded in agreement. The two best friends lay on the grass, breathing heavily and digesting all the food they had had. Rook couldn't help but smile. His life was great.
 Nothing could go wrong.
