Chapter 13

Rook padded downstairs beside Saffanah for breakfast. Jeremy and Diana were at the table eating breakfast. It was a Sunday and Jeremy did not have work. Saffanah rushed to give Jeremy a hug while Diana gave her a peck on the head. Jeremy sipped a cup of coffee while Diana had prepared a bowl of milk and cereal for Saffanah. Diana was sipping from a hot cup of tea. Rook brushed against Diana's leg in good morning while Jeremy scratched him on the ear. Rook trotted to the kitchen and lapped up his food. He took a few drops of water then padded back into the living room. He sat on the sofa, staring in front of him but still listening to the conversation of the family.
"Saffanah," Jeremy was saying. "I've got very very good news."
"What is it?" asked Saffana eagerly. Diana chuckled.
"I've gotten promoted in my job," announced Jeremy.
"What does that mean?" asked Saffanah.
"It means that now, I'm more important in my job and we will get more money so we will go on better holidays. And not just that, we might get to move to London!" Jeremy exclaimed. "How great is that?"
"London?" cried Saffanah. "Yay!" Rook pricked his ears as he heard some scratching at the door. Swiftly, he slipped off the couch and towards the cat flap. He pushed it and stepped outside. He almost had a heart attack. Standing on the doorstep was Missing tail cat. Rook squeaked and jumped back. He hit his head on the door. Missing tail cat hissed. There were loud footsteps and Rook felt warm hands grab him. He knew them as Jeremy's. He could have yelled in relief. Jeremy put him down on the ground gently.
            "Clumsy cat," he laughed.
"Rook!" cooed Saffanah. Jeremy tickled Rook under the chin then walked back to the table. Rook shook himself. He had to warn Domino. Domino could be next. He was safe as long as he stayed inside with his family but if he attempted to go outside, he was scared that Missing tail cat might kill him. He couldn't believe Missing tail cat had followed them all the way back. Domino would freak out. Rook paced around, thinking hard.
"He looks so thoughtful!" laughed Diana.
"He's probably thinking about what's going to be for dinner," nodded Jeremy. Rook wasn't listening. Missing tail cat was outside, waiting to kill him. His whole house could be surrounded for all he knew. There was a small tap of claws outside. Rook felt shivers down his spine.
"Get out here Rook," came Missing tail cat's chilling voice. Rook stopped in his track and almost froze in fright. What was taking over him? He shook himself. He wouldn't be scared. He wouldn't let Missing tail cat know he was afraid. He was safe. He had Jeremy and Diana with him. Even Saffanah. Nothing could possibly happen.
"Come on scaredy cat," Missing tail cat's voice came once more. Rook didn't get scared this time. He was glad Missing tail cat couldn't come in. "I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to talk." Rook scoffed. As if. There was a pause.
"Aw come on kid. I can't kill you. Your humans are here. I'm not going to risk it. Just poke your head out. Or just talk to me from the other side of the flap," Missing tail cat said. Rook sighed. He didn't want to get hurt but the curiosity still overpowered him. He padded to the flap.
"What do you want?" he demanded.
"Just wanted to talk to you about yesterday," Missing tail cat said. "I-I need your help." Rook's eyes almost popped out. Did Missing tail cat really think he was that stupid?
              "Ha, get out," Rook snapped.
"I'm not kidding ok? Yesterday, those two men came into the stable and they took Linda, Mochi and Snap," Missing tail cat said.
               "Wow. Leave. Now."
"Please. I need you to help me. They're being kept in the barn. The- the slaughter barn. They're going to die. I don't want them to die. Do you?"
"Um, the world would be just fine without them. We'd be just fine without them. Thank you very much but now kindly leave." Rook almost rolled his eyes at Missing tail cat's stupid request.
"You can't just let them die!" wailed Missing tail cat.
"If I recall, you were about to watch us die by their claws just yesterday," retorted Rook.
"We weren't going to kill you. Just harm you," Missing tail cat justified.
"Mhmmm. Totally," Rook said unbelievingly. "Leave or I'm going to let my humans know you're here." Missing tail cat snickered.
"Look, I'll give you what you want in return," Missing tail cat said.
              "And what is that?"
               "Information. About the Clans."
"The Clans? I don't care about them," scoffed Rook.
"But you said that was where you cam from."
               "The forest. Not the Clans."
"Yes, the forest is owned by the Clans. You can't come from the forest and not be part of the Clans," Missing tail cat explained frustratedly. "You even said it yourself, you're WindClan." Rook rolled his eyes.
"If you hadn't realised, I live with humans. I'm not part of a Clan," Rook answered.
"Yes but I saw the way you ran yesterday. As swiftly as a WindClan cat, there's no mistaking it," Missing tail cat answered smoothly.
"I'm not helping you. It's final. How do I know this is not all a trick? Even if it isn't, you tried to kill me. And I don't care about the Clans. I may dream of where I came from sometimes, but in all honesty, I don't care. I have a good life. I have a good family. Where I came from does not matter," Rook replied firmly and calmly. He meant every word.
"Oh but it does," Missing tail cat said slyly. "Because somewhere in that forest. In WindClan. There are cats mourning for you. Cats that miss you. Cats that don't know that you're a kittypet." Rook wrinkled his nose. Kittypet didn't sound like a nice word.
             "Kittypet?" he growled.
"Yes. A human pet," Missing tail cat sneered. "And don't you want to meet your mother? Father? Brothers? Sisters?"
"No," replied Rook flatly. "Leave." With that, swivelled around and trotted to the couch. He leapt onto it and curled into a ball. He closed his eyes and let himself doze off. He ignored the angry scratching of Missing tail cat. He ignored it when Missing tail cat started yelling insults. He even ignored Jeremy when Jeremy swung open the door and shooed Missing tail cat away.
