Chapter 2
Oddly enough; with a snap of the fingers, the first week of senior year turns out to be complete. Friday morning, Leighton exits her house to find Harper waiting in her car, which is parked at the end of the driveway. Leighton settles comfortably into the passenger seat of Harper's car. Then carefully, Harper proceeds to back the car out of the driveway and onto the street.
"Tonight is the big exciting diner outing. Do you believe Maeve will finally give Matt a chance?" Harper half asks.
"Why would I give Matt a chance?" Maeve inquires, from the backseat.
"Uh maybe,...you know....because Matt is obviously into you" Harper expresses.
"And has been into you for a while" Leighton adds.
"I don't think there has been much evidence to support this theory" Maeve decides.
"Well, Matt seemed excited to agree to tonight's outing. Probably because he is looking forward to seeing you and spending time with you". Harper turns the steering wheel. "I guess Lee and I shouldn't be surprised if you and Matt attend prom together".
"Us, Lee and Zander. Than you and...do you have an eye on anyone?" Maeve half asks.
"As of yet, no one has made the cut". Harper turns the steering wheel again and parks in the main parking lot of the school by the main entrance.
"There's time, it's only the beginning of the year". Maeve opens the door. "Its not like you'll be in the supportive friend role forever". Maeve departs the car, closing the door behind herself.
"You okay?" Leighton inquires, noticing Harper's expression. "Maeve didn't-".
"I know what Maeve meant. We'd better get going. We don't want to be late to class". Harper departs the car, closes the door. She begins to walk away.
Leighton is the last to exit the car. Now she ventures across the parking lot, spotting Matt and Zander conversing by the front door.
"So M, she said to meet at the diner around six" Matt informs, while she ventures closer.
"Sounds good to me," Leighton replies.
"Me too," Zander agrees.
"Is M seeing anyone? I'm just curious because I feel that I don't hide how I feel about her. She doesn't seem interested" Matt explains.
"You know Maeve. She has a lot on her mind" Leighton replies.
"Girls are like that. Besides I'm sure you all are already creating your prom plans" Zander teases, gaining an eye roll in reponse.
There is a moment of silence.
"I just don't know how to make it clearer" Matt states.
"That's why I told you to follow my guide" Zander advises him.
"Oh, Zander is your love tour guide. Are you sure that's a good idea?" Leighton half asks, catching Zander's eye.
"Call me desperate" Matt replies, jokingly.
"My advice for the record was good. Just ask her out, point blank" Zander informs.
"That could work" Leighton states, positively.
"That advice worked successful for me" Zander informs Matt.
"Oh yeah, that's right. You two dated. What happened there? Not many people know the details of the breakup story" Matt explains.
"Long story short. Zander screwed up and broke my trust" Leighton expresses, avoiding eye contact. "There's the bell. I'll see you in class".
Leighton ventures away into the school. She runs her hand through her hair as she walks down the hallway, proceeding to block out a sudden painful memory. She reaches her homeroom and claims an empty desk in the back row of the room. She manages to maintain focus throughout the class. Even when her mind continually drifts to flashbacks of her and Zander.
"Hey Lee, I didn't mean to put you in awkward position with Zander this morning" Matt apologizes as they both make their way into the cafeteria.
"Its fine. There isn't anything between us" Leighton replies. "Old history".
"Really? You seemed weird when you left us" Matt half asks.
"I'm fine, really" Leighton tells him.
"You know Zander isn't with anyone. At least no one, he has informed me about. Either way, he hasn't been with anyone in a serious way since you. Maybe I'm not supposed to tell you any of this because of guy code and everything. But I thought you should know" Matt explains.
"So, are you going to ask Maeve out tonight?" Leighton asks, changing the subject. "I think you and Maeve would be a really good fit together".
"I'll ask her, if the moment is right" Matt answers.
"Hey," Harper greets, joining them.
"I bet Harper would agree, that you and M would be prefect together" Leighton tells him.
"Uh yeah. Lee is right. You two would be prefect together" Harper expresses.
"All I'll say is that I'll consider asking Maeve". Matt grabs a green tray out of the pile. "I'll see you two later,".
The pair of friends exchange a look.
"Seems like we'll have to do some matchmaking tonight" Leighton presumes.
"And Maeve can thank us at her wedding" Harper replies.
Now chatter circulates around the table, regrading the impending outing. The girls each take their seats.
"We'll meet around six" Maeve checks.
"Sounds good. I can pick Lee up on my way" Harper offers.
"Why not have Zander pick up Lee? He lives closer, anyways. What do you think Lee?" Matt half asks.
"I'm fine with that. Whatever Zander wants to do" Leighton answers, shrugging.
"Yeah, sure. I'll come around five fortyish" Zander tells her.
"Okay," Leighton replies.
Halfway through the lunch period, Harper departs the table. Soon after, Leighton follows after her. She ends up finding Harper, sitting on the floor in front of her locker.
"You know Maeve didn't mean to offend you this morning. You know how excited she gets about the possibility of matchmaking" Leighton reminds.
Harper shrugs. "I know I'm not the extrovert when it comes to dating. But I just thought by now I'd have someone".
"You'll find someone. Just takes time" Leighton assures. "Besides I'm not very extrovert when it comes to the dating world".
"That's true. You haven't really seemed to be with anyone, aside from Zander" Harper replies.
Leighton rolls her eyes. "I guess that true".
"I didn't mean to complain. I just feel like I'm always waiting" Harper replies. "Like I'm glad for you and M when you two have someone. I'm totally supportive. Just curious when it'll be my turn".
"You'll have your turn and we'll be just as supportive as you have" Leighton assures her.
At the end of the school day, Leighton arrives home. There happens to be a little more than a three hour time gap until the diner outing. Leighton heads upstairs. Later she decides to wear a plain attire; a purple sweater, a lavender skirt with gray hearts all over it, a pair of black leggings underneath it and a pair of black boots. Soon enough, Leighton answers a knock at the front door to find Zander standing on the landing.
"Good evening Lee". Zander wears a plain red long-sleeved shirt, a pair of jeans and a pair of sneakers.
"Hey Zander. Ready to go?" Leighton half asks.
"Yeah. You ready?" Zander replies.
"Yeah,". Leighton closes and locks the door.
Now Harper enters the diner, finding Maeve and Matt already sitting at the table.
"Lee texted. Her and Zander are on their way". Harper places the strap of her purse on the back of the chair and sits down.
"That's good. Give them a chance to reconnect" Maeve comments.
"Why are you so determined to get them back together?" Harper asks.
"They belong together, even if they can't see the obvious fact themselves. Also, kind of seems like they still desire each other" Maeve collects a French fry from the plate in front of her. "Like a gravitational pull kind of thing".
"Maeve has a point. They both aren't dating anyone" Matt begins.
"That we know of" Harper points out.
"Don't you want Lee to be happy? Why are you so against this?". Maeve pauses and picks up her half filled water glass. "Do you have an attraction to Zander?".
"Of course, I want Lee happy. I don't have an attraction to Zander" Harper answers.
"My matchmaking skills are in Lee's best interest" Maeve informs, gaining an eye roll from Harper. "You're just jealous because you have no one to put yourself out there".
Then the diner door opens, Leighton and Zander join their friends.
"Hey guys. What's going on?" Zander asks as they reach the table.
"Nothing to exciting" Matt answers, moving his chair closer to Maeve.
"Maeve is going on about how she'll succeed in reuniting Lee and yourself" Harper summarizes, tired of the subject.
Zander and Leighton exchange a look.
"Sorry M. But Lee and I don't have any plans of getting back together anytime soon. We are long over" Zander explains.
"Yeah M. I think you'll have to redirect your matchmaking skills to someone else's love life. Why don't you try helping Harper find someone" Leighton suggests.
"Harper would be a hard candidate because she won't put herself out their for anyone" Maeve replies.
"I'd put myself out there" Harper disagrees.
"No you won't. But I'll help you if you want" Maeve replies.
"Never mind, all set" Harper decides, sternly.
"M, c'mon. Try helping her" Leighton tells her.
"Okay fine. Give me your character trait list of your ideal guy and I'll see what I can do" Maeve informs Harper.
The rest of the friend dinner is filled with reminisced memories and inside jokes. Finally, Zander drops Leighton back home. He walks her to the door. Zander runs a hand through his hair and shakes his head.
"So, what is going on between Matt and Maeve?" Zack asks.
"It was pretty obvious, right?" Leighton asks, cracking an amused smile. "Instead of worrying about our romantic reunion, Maeve should be-".
"Giving Matt a chance" Zack completes.
"Yeah," Leighton agrees. "Besides, I mean.... we're long over. We've been long over for a while". She pulled open the glass door and pauses. "We are over, right? Matt said you aren't with anyone and I'm not currently with anyone. We aren't missing some weird sign, are we?".
"No Lee. I'm not with anyone and that isn't because of you. I just don't think I'm the good in a relationship type. I don't know about the whole sign thing. But you should be open to someone else. I shouldn't be the one to wreck your opinion on future dating" Zander explains, before departing her company for the evening.
