Chapter 1

A dark blue Subaru outback pulls in and parks in the main entrance of the local park. A young brunette girl Leighton Reed exits the car. She happens to be dressed in a long-sleeved dark red hand knit sweater a pair of faded jeans and a pair of sneakers. Her hair is arranged into a loose braid. She walks over to her friend Zander Stewart, who resides by the edge of lake. She crosses her arms as she nears him.

"Hey Zander. I got your text. Why'd you want to meet here?" Leighton half asks, curious.

"I just wanted to see you. Give you a pre senior year present". Zander pulls out a small blue jewelry box out of his gray worn-out athletics sweatshirt.

Then Leighton takes the box and lifts the lid, to find a silver infinity bracelet.

"Zander, wow..." Leighton states, unsure how to feel.

"Lee, you are my best friend and you'll always be important to me. I know after everything after last year, between us. Well, I believe it will be good a senior year" Zander explains. "I know you have to get to Maeve's. So, I don't want to keep you".

"Oh, okay. Thanks for the gift" Leighton tells him, before returning to her car.

"It's nothing. See you Lee". Zander walks away.

When she arrives, she finds her friends residing in the living room. She closes the front door, sets her backpack on the hall tree and joins them in the living room. On the antique coffee table is a bright yellow bowl of buttered popcorn, a selection of candies and a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Harper picks up a short stack of DVDs from a section of her large blue Prada purse.

"I brought a selection of movies. Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club and Say Anything" Harper informs them.

Leighton turns her head to the side. "So, we're beginning our senior year in the 80's".

"I tried to and failed to explain to Harper, that she happens to be the only one of our trio who is obsessed with the 80's" Maeve informs, while Harper rolls her eyes.

"Be stuck in modern times ladies. But for the record, Breakfast Club is still the best 80's movie ever created" Harper half defends.

"If it'll make you happy, we'll watch Breakfast Club" Leighton tells Harper.

Happily, Harper jumps up and down. She claps her hands.

"You aiding her addiction isn't helpful" Maeve comments.

"Coming from someone who only will listen to Taylor Swift" Leighton points out.

"Fine, point taken". Maeve pauses and collects the popcorn bowl. "So, do anything exciting before coming here?".

"Not really. Saw Zander" Leighton answers.

"Zander. Zander Stewart" Meave checks, gaining a nod in response. "What'd he desire?".

Harper pauses from setting up the movie, returns to her seat on the couch and inquires, "Did he finally admit it?".

"If so, its about time" Maeve adds.

"He just stated that it'll be a good senior year. He gave me a gift. An infinity bracelet" Leighton answers.

"That's all that occurred. The full honest truth" Harper understands.

"And as for your position in his life is as his best friend. That is really all he mentioned" Maeve gathers.

"Yeah. Why would he have anything else to say?" Leighton inquires, shrugging. Secretly, she dreads and is fully aware where this conservation is headed.

"Granted; with what I'm about to suggest fits for all of us. You and Zander have known each other for a long time. Pretty much since elementary school" Maeve explains.

"And an infinity bracelet,... has to mean more" Harper presumes.

"It could just be a gift for senior year. It could mean that I'm family. I practically am" Leighton suggests, presuming the girls weren't buying her explanation.

The movie is mainly watched in silence, with some minor chatter. The conversations generally revolve around joyful remembrance. Soon enough, the three girls are all sound asleep. Leighton is lying under blankets on the couch, while her friends are both snuggled in sleeping bags on the light gray carpeted floor. Hours later, a loud alarm proceeds to wake them up. Maeve is the first awake. She ventures to the kitchen and collects a bottle of champagne from the fridge. She returns to the living room, lightly tapping the side of the glass bottle.

"Senior year has begun girls" Maeve announces as her friends both slowly awake. The bottle is set on the coffee table. She disappears back to the kitchen and returns with a couple of glasses. She fills each glass.

"Champagne on a school day. Isn't that inappropriate behavior?" Harper asks, jokingly as she takes a glass.

"Oh, shut it. Just drink". Meave lifts her glass. "To senior year,".

About an hour and a half later, the trio of girls enter the lobby. Leighton spots Zander standing against the white wall, conversing with another friend of theirs. Matt Killion greets them as they join them. Maeve suggests to them having dinner at the local diner later in the week to ring in the start of the senior year.

"That sounds like a good way to ring in senior year," Matt agrees. "Just text me the details and I'll be there". A couple minutes later, he heads to his homeroom class.

A typical day of classes proceed like usual. Chatter amongst fellow classmates fill the hallways and now the cafeteria atmosphere. Leighton joins her friends. Maeve nudges her in the arm as she sits down.

"Has anything else occurred between you and Zander?" Maeve inquires, curious.

"No. I don't expect it to May" Leighton replies as she opens the carton of milk on her tray.

"Lee," Maeve begins.

"May, just let it go" Leighton demands, annoyed.

"You two okay?" Matt asks, noticing the look on Leighton's face.

"Fine. Nothing worth filling you in on" Leighton answers, just before Zander takes a seat at the  table.

Though Leighton happened to be annoyed with Maeve, there was a gnawing curiosity in the back of her mind about herself and Zander. Even she had to admit it to herself. That a piece of her wondered if Zander and herself could be something more to each other again.

"Even though Maeve is so concerned with you and Zander being a thing. Does she notice or is she blind to the fact that Matt is in love with her?" Harper asks, later.

"I think Maeve is too determined to reach her goal of me admitting that Zander could mean something more to me" Leighton expresses, shutting her locker door.

"Well, he did mean something to you, once. Do you feel something for him? Again. You can tell me. I won't say anything to Maeve" Harper half jokes.

"I kind of have a feeling that the bracelet could mean something more. But I know Zander and I feel if there were another meaning, that he'd tell me" Leighton explains.

"Are you going to ask him about it?" Harper asks.

"Unless there is a reason to. I don't think I'll bother him with it" Leighton answers, while they walk down the hallway back to the cafeteria.

Later, that evening, Leighton collects a dark blue and sparkly gold starred journal out of the top drawer of the dresser. She returns to her bed, after grabbing a pen. She dates the page and writes a quicky time capsule like summary of the first day of senior year. After a short time of writing, she retires to bed.
