Chapter 10
Song - Closer (ft. Halsey) by The Chainsmokers
[Fate be Told - Chapter 10]
I sucked in a sharp breath when I felt the stinging of rubbing alcohol coming in contact with the cuts on my cheeks. I closed my eyes tightly, wincing. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, threatening to fall due to the pain my whole body was feeling. Blood started touching my tongue as I bit down on my bottom lip.
My fingers balled into fists as I gripped the bottom hemline of Nixon's shirt that I was wearing. I released a cry of pain. The doctor, who I learned was named Kate, stared at me with a sympathetic look. "I know it hurts, Luna," she assured me, "but the pain will go away soon. I promise."
I gritted my teeth but nodded. She cleaned up the dry blood around my nose. Once she was done, she took off her latex gloves and threw them away in the garbage can by the small bed I was sitting on. She turned to look at me. "You should probably get some rest," Kate suggested before walking over to the door. "Beta Reese will help you to your house."
As if on queue, Reese came walking into the room after knocking on the door. He immediately walked over to me and lifted me up bridal style. I shifted uncomfortably in his arms, not enjoying the feeling of being in the arms of someone other than my mate.
"Thank you, Kate." I gave her a small smile and wave as Reese exited the house.
"The pleasure is mine, Luna," she replied before adding, "And I suggest not pulling what you did earlier, again." I chuckled.
"No promises." A smile broke out on her face as she released a laugh.
"I like you. You'd make a great Luna. I sure hope Alpha realizes that he's got one unique mate. You're the first one in this pack to ever challenge him to a fight and not submit within a minute of it starting," she said. "You've got a lot of balls. More than any other wolf I've met." I felt my cheeks flame up and my smile grew. I replied with a 'thank you' and she nodded before shutting the front door to her house.
Carrying me, Reese began making his way over to Nixon's house silently and stiffly. When we reached the front door, he gently placed me down on my feet, still keeping his arm around me to steady me, and unlocked the door. Then I was back in his arms as he brought me over to the couch and sat me on the soft cushions.
"Thank you," I said and he nodded.
"Alpha won't be back until tomorrow," he responded as he turned to leave, but my big mouth opened up before he could leave the room.
"What's his deal?" I blurted out without much thought. Reese froze in his spot and slightly turned his head so that I could only see the side of his pale face. His brown eyes stared at the wall for a few seconds, not sure whether or not he should answer.
He sighed and ran his hand over his face before his eyes met my expectant ones. "I don't if I should tell you," he finally said with a frown, "It's not really my place to tell..."
I crossed my arms across my chest and pursed my lips. "Well why not? He's obviously not going to tell me."
He suppressed a loud sigh before fully turning to me. "You'll find out soon. Just not now." And with that, he disappeared out of the room, leaving me all alone in Nixon's large house. My mind was fogged up as I tried processing what Reese had said.
It's not my place to tell...
You'll find out soon...
Just not now...
I sat there, staring at the ceiling. Well shit... It must be pretty bad by the way Reese was looking at me. He must be a lot closer to Nixon than I had expected. Like they have a brotherly bond, more than I could ever understand.
What the hell happened to Nixon?

My whole body ached and jolts of pain shot through my body every time I shifted. It was around 11:00 p.m. and the whole living room was dark besides the light coming from the T.V. in front of me. I surfed through the channels, trying to find something to watch. With no luck, I angrily turned off the T.V. and chucked the remote at the coffee table in front of me.
Darkness filled the room, the only light coming from the moon outside. The curtains for the window were pulled back, allowing me to see outside. Slowly getting up, ignoring the sharp pain in my head, I limped over to the window. I slid open the window, allowing the cool breeze of the night kiss my skin.
Leaning against the window frame, I stared up at the large, full moon. It was so bright and beautiful. I've always enjoyed full moons. My eyes closed as I felt the breeze dance across my face. The smell of fresh pine trees filled my nose and I breathed it in, sighing in content even though my body was in pain. My messy hair swayed lightly as the breeze blew through it and I smiled.
Nature always seemed to calm me down whenever I was struggling with something or if I was in pain. Most girls would eat ice cream, but I'll be outside eating a packet of Oreos.
A sound off in the distance had shivers crawling up my spine as I became alert. Goosebumps formed on my legs and arms, the air suddenly becoming ice cold. Howling, which soon turned to growling and barking, echoed through the air. It sounded as if it was nearby.
I unconsciously took a step back, fear seeping through me as I stared at the dark forest ahead of me. The owner of the howling sounded like they were angry and sad. The hair at the nape of my neck poked out as I continued to feel fear. My hands reached out and gripped onto the curtains in front of me. It didn't take much thought to close the window. When I turned around, I became more aware of how dark it was in the room and it created an unsettling feel in my stomach.
Walking over to the couch, I wrapped myself up in the blanket around my shaking form and plopped down on the soft cushions. I grabbed all of the pillows from the couch and placed them around me, building a weak "shield-like wall", thinking that it'll protect me if something were to come and attack me.
The howling continued for hours and I tried my hardest to block it out but I couldn't. The pain I felt towards the creature lingered as well. 'You feel that too?' Artemis asked. The sound of her voice calmed me down a little.
'Yeah,' I responded, 'but why?'
Artemis was quiet for a couple seconds as if she was trying to figure that out herself. 'I'm not really sure...' she finally replied. I couldn't help but wonder.

I didn't get any sleep. Whenever I tried, so many things flooded through my mind, not allowing me to clear my mind in order to sleep. And with that howling, it never stopped either until sunrise. Whoever that was, was obviously depressed and didn't care about sleep.
My eyes drooped as I released a yawn. I walked into the kitchen, wrapped in the blanket, in search of food. I went over to the fridge and pulled open the door while licking my lips. My eyes zeroed in on the packages of Pepper-jack cheese and eggs. I pulled out the items along with other ingredients to make scrambled eggs.
After making the scrambled eggs, I put some onto a plate and poured myself a cup of orange juice. I carry my food over to the counter and sit on one of the blue, high chairs. I begin eating, shoveling forkfuls of eggs into my mouth, relishing their salty flavor.
I was about halfway done with my meal when I heard the front door open and close. My heart began to pound rapidly as the scent of my mate filled the air. I immediately stopped chewing and froze in my spot when I heard the sound of footsteps coming closer to the kitchen. I swallowed roughly and placed my fork on my plate.
My breath hitched when the footsteps ceased. I stared down at the floor as I felt his presence. I began playing with my fingers as I felt his gaze burning holes in the back of my head.
"Look at me," he commanded in an authoritative whisper. I nervously bit my lip as I continued to stare at the floor. My mind was telling me to listen and look up since he was most certainly an alpha, but my body wouldn't listen. I was scared that if I looked up, I'd give into him and I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of having control over me.
He took a step towards me and repeated the three words again, "Look at me." It wasn't at stern as the first time but it still held power, as if he was ordering me around. As I sat on the stool, my feet barely touching the floor, I began nervously rubbing my toe nail against the bottom of my other foot.
"Trinity," my heart skipped a beat when I heard my name roll off his tongue, "please look at me." I closed my eyes tightly as I could feel myself giving in. He sounded sad and his voice was softer than before.
I slowly moved my eyes up to his and my eyes widened when I saw the bruises on his face. I did that to him? To my very own mate? I felt a pain inside of my stomach as I stared at the scars. Shouldn't they have healed by now since we have enhanced healing?
His eyes wandered over my face and body. He growled lowly when he saw what he did to me. 'His wolf regrets fighting you,' Artemis told me.
'I regret it too....' I whimpered.
His eyes searched mine as we stood there in complete silence. My wolf urged me to move towards him and show him how sorry I was for inflicting pain upon him. Even though he was the one who made me want to do it, I should have never challenged him. I was just so caught up in my anger that I didn't realize what the outcome would be.
I don't know whether or not he's going to change or if he's going to continue being an ass towards me. I'm just hoping that he notices that I'm not what he expected me to be. That he get's to know me first before making any more judgmental comments about me.
He moved towards me and wrapped his arms around my small frame, embracing me into a tight hug. My cheeks heated up as I felt the heat and electric shocks that emitted from him when our bodies came in contact with each other. Artemis purred as she enjoyed the feeling of our mate's arms around us, making us feel protected. "I'm so sorry...." he whispered.
He was going to continue, but I pressed my index finger to his lips, "Me too."

After our little moment, the old Nixon unfortunately came back. He immediately pulled away as if I was fire, scorching his perfect skin. He stiffly scratched the back of his neck and told me he had to catch up on pack work before disappearing down the hallway.
I stood in the empty kitchen for what seemed like forever, staring down the dark hallway where Nixon's figure disappeared. My mind was trying to wrap around the event that just took place. Nixon showed a sign of affection, but then acted as if he regretted ever doing it by leaving me without many words.
I clenched my jaw while angrily placing my dishes in the sink, not even bothering to wash them. Then I began making my way to my bedroom. As I passed a door, the smell of my mate filled my nose. I turned to face the door. The sudden urge to ask him about yesterday consumed me by taking over my whole body, making me knock on the door.
Heavy footsteps reached the door and the door knob twisted as Nixon opened the door. I tilted my head back to look at him in the eyes and he stared down at me expectantly. "What do you want?" he asked.
I bit my lip and he narrowed his eyes at my mouth. "Don't do that," he ordered. I rose an eyebrow in confusion but shrugged, not really caring at the moment. "Why are you here?"
I glanced down at my feet nervously before looking back at him with more confidence. "I want to know what happened yesterday," I replied. He stiffened and his eyes darkened. He sighed and gestured me to come in. When I stepped in, I looked around, taking in everything.
The furniture was made from a dark redwood that matched the floor which had a red rug placed in the center. Bookshelves lined one side of the room and a giant window was placed on the other side. A large desk was placed in front of it which had a lamp and a pile of scattered papers and books on top. A black leather chair stood behind it along with some other drawers. A couple of leather chairs sat in front of the desk.
I heard him close the door behind me. "What do you want to know?" he asked as he looked at me in the eyes, his green irises not looking away.
I swallowed, "Why were you acting so weird after we...um fought?" Nixon glanced down at the ground. Then he lifted his hand and ran it down his face. He licked his lips before looking at me again.
"It was nothing." he answered.
"Bullshit!" I shouted. Nixon rolled his eyes at me.
"It's none of your business anyways. So just let it go." He snapped. I clenched my jaw as my fingers balled into fists. I restrained myself from marching up to him and punching him in the face.
"It is too my damn business. I'm your mate and anything that concerns you, concerns me whether you like it or not. You may not care about me and I may or may not care about you either, but deal with it. The moon goddess thought it would be funny to pair us two together and there must be a reason for it unless she made a mistake."
Nixon's lips parted slightly before he clenched his jaw. "It's best if you didn't know," he whispered, "It will only make things more complicated." I blinked a couple times before turning towards the door.
"I'm not going to pry into your business, but I just want you to know that even though we're not like how mates are suppose to be, I'm still your mate and I deserve to know," I said before leaving the room.
