II

As I did all those years ago I sat at the edge of the cliff in honor of Lisa. The memory of her still haunts me, and that I didn't save her. For six years I've dealt with the guilt I've inflicted upon myself, as well as raising Jessica. I still think of Lisa everytime I see or talk to Jess, and it pains me. I try to think of Jess and know that I have her with me and that Lisa isn't coming back, but I can't help but feel grief around her. She can tell something is up, but I refuse to talk about it. If I ever told her that she had a twin that I failed to protect it would kill me to see her reaction alone.

Jess and I just travel around, we don't bother trying to find home, it doesn't exist in this world, or any world for that fact. Though I always make it a tradition to come back here on the day of everything, my mother, my father, my sister. Jess knows it's her birthday, but I always take off alone, I don't want her to have to see the graves. Some savage dug up their actually bodies, so now I've combined what's left in one hole, where they can be joined together forever.

So much has happened, I wonder what would have happened if I even had one of them still with me. As I hang my head over the cliff I think if the memories, the short time I had with Lisa. For all I know, she's still out there somewhere, alive and well. "Zack, why do you come here every year? I'm not a child anymore, and I follow you every year. So why don't you stop pretending like you don't notice I hide here and just talk to me." Jess's voice startled me.

"Jess, you shouldn't be out here, daylight should be coming soon and no one can be outside during the sun hours." I remained with my back turned to her.

"Zack! I'm done playing games! Why do you hate me so much!" She screamed.

"How on earth could you think I hate you!" I shot up and turned to her. " You're the only thing in this world I care about and no matter what happens you're my little sister. I could never hate you." I hugged her.

As she started shedding a few tears I gripped her tighter. She never actually came out and said anything like that before, have I been shutting her out that bad that she believes I hate her? Without another word I started walking with her back towards the old bunker, I can't break the vow I made all those years ago, but maybe I can show her our old home.

The walk to the house put pain in my heart, I remember this as if it were only yesterday. I could even find the exact rock that I tripped over, I was so angry from all the memories flooding back at me all at once, I picked up the large rock as did my best to chuck it, though it was kind of heavy and didn't go very far. I kicked it with all of my might, in the end it cost me even more loss of pride added on to all of those years ago.

I hadn't even been to the old bunker since that night, I imagine it's all charred and by now, probably in shambles from scavengers. The thought of returning was killing me from the inside out, how would I take it when I'd see so many things that reminded me of my past. Stopping in my tracks I froze, just a few feet away was the entrance to the bunker. Panic was surging throughout my body, I stood in the exact spot the hooded figure who took Lisa stood. And just next to me Jess looked out towards the hill, I'm not sure if she remembers or not, but it's killing me just being here. "Zack, where are we?" Jess looked at me.

Without a word, I slowly went for the hidden door of the bunker, still open from all those years ago. Walking down the stairs, with every step tears were attempting to well up in my eyes, The walls were scorched but everything still seemed to be here. Charred curtains still dangled showing how we separated the bunker into rooms. Random pieces of fabric and cloth lined the floors as I walked through the rubble. "Zack," I could almost hear the echo of my mother's voice.

I could hear Jess behind me, swallowing all the pain I turned to her. "Why are we in here? It looks like someone should be coming back soon, or it could be a trap. The door was open, why would it be open if it wasn't one, we have to get out of here." Jess started panicking.

About to burst out of the door, I grabbed her hand and pulled her towards me. "Jess, no one lives here and no one will. Six years ago there was a fire that burnt pretty much everything in here, everyone knows where this is and because of that no one is coming. Also there were stories of a child being stolen from the family that used to live here. I used to know that family," It hurt to lie, but I couldn't tell her the truth. "I once was a friend to the boy who lived here, the night his little sister was born, his mother died. A year after on the night of his mother's death, his father committed suicide leaving the boy alone with his sister. The younger sister was taken, but she had a twin who he was able to save. I don't know what happened to him after that. They kind of just disappeared."

"And why do you come back here every year on this day?" I hated Jess's curious side at times.

Man did I just give in to a mouth full, what on earth am I going to say now? "I pay my respects."

"But why on my birthday every year?" I think Jess was starting to understand the truth, it scared me that she could possibly find the truth.

"He promised me one year he'd meet me on that cliff on this day, he never has and I honestly think he may be dead." Part of me did die that day, that part of me went with Lisa and I don't think it will return.

"Than why do you still come back?" I could tell her curiousness and probable belief that I was lying subsiding.

"The only thing that you can rarely find these days, hope." I answered.

Instantly a small memory appeared in my head, one that made me question every decision I ever made. "We'll get the other one eventually boy, and you can't stop us." The warning from the hooded figure. They'd come back and take Jess from me. I couldn't let that happen.

"Jess we have to leave now." I ordered.

"It's almost the sun hours, how can we? We'd die if we tried to go too far." Crap, she did have a point.

"Jess no questioning what I say from this point on, I need you to listen to everything I say. It's never been more important." Jess looked scared.

I grabbed her hand and we started running towards the door. I could feel the sun hours were going to be coming near. Though if I remember correctly, there's a little building just down the hill and a mile away, we may be able to hide in there for the time being. The stars were starting to loose their luster as I knew our time was limited. Walking slowly to observe my surrounding I looked out at the hill. This was our only chance and if anything happened or slowed us down we're screwed. "Jess, down this hill and about a mile straight, there will be a building. If for any reason I don't make it, hide in there and don't come out, don't even let anyone in no matter how panicked they may be. And if I die, once nightfall hit run as far away from here as you can and don't ever return." Jess had upgraded to full on terrified.

"What are you doing? Why would you not come back?"

"Come on, not time for questions, start running." I grabbed her hand again and started charging down the hill. Echos of the hooded figures voice lingered around me, with every second they were calling my name.

Zack.

It was putting me in a panic, I constantly kept looking back at Jes to make sure she was still behind me, that it was still her holding my hand.

Zack.

Every ounce of myself was flipping out, and just my luck, I tripped on another rock. Both Jess and I went rolling down that hill. Tumbling so fast it's almost as if we just fell of a short cliff. As we finally stopped, two solitary hooded figure stood over us, "Hello Zack, we did say we would be back for her didn't we?" One of them spoke.

Swinging my body around I tried to trip the hooded figures, but I went straight through them. It was as if they weren't there. I read about them before, holograms I believe they're called. A trick while someone else does the dirty work. "ZACK!" Jess screamed.

Turning to her, two different hooded figured were holding her, one of them was trying to cover her mouth. "Let her go!" I shouted.

As one of them covered her mouth with some sort of wet cloth, I watched as Jess's whole being just went limp and fell into the hooded figures. "Goodbye Zack, we did say we'd get her too. And now you've failed with protecting your whole family. Your parents would be so ashamed, gave their lives and all you did is fail with their legacy." They gloated.

Trying to get up to reach Jess in time my foot buckled under me, major pains ran through my whole leg. And just like before, they were gone with a bolt of light, and I had failed to protect everything I've ever loved. Jess was gone as well and now I'm alone in the world.

I laid there on the ground and just cried, who cares if I'm a guy, I have feelings too.
