Chapter 28
As the cooling fog dissipated the lab began heating up like a preheating oven, a sweltering oppressive heat sweat quickly forming on my skin trying to cool me down. Sand began to form in the air as light shone from inside the darkened cell a mass that looked more like cracking lava. The earth beneath our feet shook violently causing me to fall as dust and debris showered down from above.
"KILL THEM, KILL THEM ALL!" Dr. Cunning screamed as the sand picked up into a vortex, the last thing I saw as the sand blinded me was a bought of flame rushing towards me completely consuming the mad doctor in it's path. When the sand cleared I was crouched on the ground sunlight shining down from above Danny was laying on the ground alive but barely conscious while Rameses was crumpled on the ground next to me but still alive. Pine trees surrounded us like towering sentinels, I stood picking Rameses up and noticing that we seemed to be on a rocky ridge standing watch high above a town in the valley below.
"RUN! YOU NEED TO RUN!" Seth screamed in my head.
"What about Jasper!" I asked.
"Your wisp is no more, that foolish warlock used the chaos magic he stole from you to turn your wisp into a flame wraith. The last time an attempt was made to create one that was barely a quarter of the size of this one it caused the Chicago fire." Seth replied tense and on edge.
I was about to retort when a massive boom shook the world bringing my attention to the mountain I could see across the valley. On the mountain side was a massive building that was consumed as flames rocketed high into the sky in an explosive blast sending rock and stone flying in every direction. Molten rock began oozing out of what was left of the building like a festering wound rolling down the slope in coils of magma.
"How do we stop it?" I asked
"That's nothing he's just clearing his throat he hasn't even begun to sing. You need to go!" Seth snapped fear lacing his tone.
"If you're so afraid why haven't teleported us yet?" I retorted.
"I can't take you any farther than this the flame wraith is pulling on the temporary bond trying to get to you as soon as I try to take you further away he will piggyback on the magic and then you'll be dead for sure." Seth told me after a few moments.
"So he's just going to follow us?" I asked.
"Only until the bond ends but it won't get that far other stronger witches will come to destroy him before he can do too much more damage." Seth replied.
"Is there a way to save him?" I asked being met by silence.
"Is there a way to save him?" I asked again slowly and firmly.
"Yes and no." Seth replied.
"How?" I demanded.
"Flame wraiths in old days could have their power bound by becoming a witches familiar and having their power sealed into a container a lamp a lantern as long as it was fire proof, but you can't do that." Seth told me.
"What do you mean I can't?" I asked crossly as with each moment fire spread through the forest that surrounded the demolished buildings on a devastating march towards the town.
"You already have a familiar, there is a reason witches only have one true familiar which for you is Rameses and have temporary bonds with others. The human mind can only safely handle one other mind linked to it in the past witches who took multiple familiars almost always went insane as their minds were torn apart being dragged in different directions by their familiars. It was only in rare cases where the familiars were similar and got along that this madness wasn't debilitating or dangerous. Rameses and Jasper are two very different things a creature and a spirit one of fire and one of electricity let alone those two don't get along." Seth warned.
"Rameses?" I asked causing him to look up at me with tired eyes.
"There's a way we can save Jasper but it means I have to make him my familiar. If you say no I will not blame you or hold it against you." I told Rameses since Seth had been speaking only to me he had no idea about the cost and I wasn't about to enlighten him. I wanted an honest answer from him.
"Save Jasper." Rameses croaked in my mind his mind determined and steadfast.
"Alright, Danny take care of Rameses while I'm gone ok. I'll be back." I told them handing Rameses over to Danny before turning away hoping I wasn't lying to them.
"You truly are chaotic. Well it would be far from the first time my follower was mad as a hatter." Seth chuckled as sand began to swirl and the next moment I was at the edge of the town the forest fire spreading as firefighters tried to tame it. I heard them yell as I ran into the fiery forest trees falling as their anchors were burned through.
"So, how do I make him my familiar then?" I asked since with Rameses it was blood and a new name but Rameses was a spirit Jasper was a creature and a flame wraith so there was probably a difference.
"Well the ritual is even simpler than binding Rameses to you since the temporary bond is already in place." All you need to do is get him to take enough of a form that you can splash some blood on him, after that comes the hard part you have to endure. Unlike a spirit a creature has their own magic so you have to endure while his magic becomes a part of yours and contain it, chain it with your own and that's if he accepts you. if he doesn't or you falter he will burn through you like a wildfire, I doubt there would even be bones left." Seth replied as the flames danced around me.
"How do I find him?" I asked jumping out of the way as a tree fell where I had just been the smoke burning my lungs.
"He's here you have to draw him in." Seth told me.
"JASPER, JASPER I"M HERE!" I called out cupping my hands to make my voice carry over the crackling and hissing of the fire. When there was no response I flared my magic remembering what Seth had said about Jasper following me. The reaction was instant as the flames closed in reaching closer to me as it turned a flickering blue. I quickly pressed on the cut I had used to summon Seth opening it back up as it bled again.
"Jasper It's me Morgan." I called out hoping he would listen.
"Morgan. Not safe, not safe, Cunning." Jasper's voice muttered as it seemed to come from every direction.
"Dr. Cunning is dead we're all ok Danny, Rameses and I we are all okay." I consoled holding my hands out hoping it would give him a focal point
"Jasper do you want to be my familiar?" I asked causing the flames in front of me to consolidate into a human form and reached out his flickering hands. I took a step forward placing my hands in his gritting my teeth as the fire burned my hands. I knew the moment my blood went up in flames as Jasper dissipated into flames again swirling like a tornado around me as flames burn deep marks into my skin, but that was secondary to the burning pain that was coursing through every fiber of me like fire racing through my veins and arteries trying to only leave ashes in it's wake. I held firm barely remaining standing trying to concentrate on my own magic that seemed to be burning away as it touched Jasper's.
"Mine, only mine." Jasper's voice whispered in my mind as his magic began to attack my bond with Rameses.
"No not yours we are partners and friends a witch and their familiar. You are mine but so is Rameses and I'm not letting go." I told him sternly my magic moving to create chains that wrapped around his magic pulling it away from my bond with Rameses. Jasper recoiled as my magic finally withstood his, confusion racing through his mind before it turned into rolling waves of anger.
"Rameses always gets everything and he destroys it all!" Jasper screamed in my mind as flashes of images raced past at breakneck speed. A little girl scared and alone on grimy streets, two girls dead side by side on tables cut open on display, a woman's body at the bottom of a well her white hair matted and red eyes staring up lifelessly. With each image grief and sadness rang like a gong but under it was guilt like a sour tone.
"Rameses regrets what happened, and as painful as it was you can't let it keep you from living now." I consoled gaining the upper hand as Jasper's magic was wrapped in my own and the burning went from painful to a gentle warmth with each inch I won. It was when I had taken full control of all the magic in my body that I realized that Jasper's magic continued all around me in a swirling vortex of emotions.
"You can't take all of that energy into yourself, you're not strong enough. You need to seal it in a container until you are strong enough." Seth's voice came across as a whisper through the crackle and hiss of flames. Jasper's flames had burned through the strap that had kept my bag tied to me with the lantern laying on the ground within my reach.
"Jasper you need to go back in the lantern." I called out holding the lantern up with it's door open, Jasper obeyed immediately blue flames flying into the lantern at breakneck speed leaving behind calmer red flames. As I thought the lantern would break from the sheer amount off flame going into it the door snapped shut with an audible click Seth's magic moving through me to the door which was melting shut as electricity carved hieroglyphs into the metal.
"Morgan stand up there is one more thing that needs to be done." Seth told me as I fell to one knee, he couldn't seriously want me to go after my dad right now!
"No child, the fire still needs to be stopped all you need do is stand and raise your hands to the sky. I will handle the rest." Seth chuckled, I did as he asked letting him have full control too tired to be bothered. Storm clouds quickly formed blotting out the sunlight before unleashing a thunderous downpour quenching the flames around me. Seth used my body to walk over to the downed tree that had nearly crushed me before laying down on my back beside it.
"Rest child, no harm will come to you here." Seth whispered as I felt lighter like I had before Seth's possession, I couldn't keep my eyes open as Rameses emotions of comfort brushed against my mind like a cat's purr and Jasper's reassurances thrummed like a hearth fire.
