Chapter 22

With the bond established there wasn't much of a difference between communicating with Jasper and Rameses they could even talk to each other which I quickly learned wasn't exactly a good thing as the two had broken out into three fights before Jasper's alcohol arrived. It would be dead calm in the room and the next second one would leap at the other in attack. Thankfully once Jasper had regained his strength he was quick to leave the tension in the room lessening with his departure.

Jasper had said he would take a week to make sure the police couldn't follow him back and thought Danny had gone west on a train. That had been four days ago, four days of Danny healing and my running errands alone since neither Rameses nor Danny could really leave the hotel room. I had tried several times to turn Rameses back to his smaller cat form only to be unable too, every time it was as if I was running into a wall.

Similarly Rameses had been colder than usual, for the short time I had known him he had almost always been monotone a spoke sparingly but now I was lucky if I got a one word answer. He also seemed to be keeping his emotions from me which before I would get flashes of emotion from his but now it was more like TV static. In contrast Jasper had been sending feelings of reassurance regularly, one of the differences between the bond with Jasper and the bond with Rameses turned out to be that outside of a certain distance maybe a couple blocks I couldn't speak telepathically with Jasper only being able to send and receive emotions as far as I knew.

Aside from a couple of ribs that Danny was sure Cas had broken on his left side Danny was back to full health to the point where he was a bit frustrated having to be cooped up in the hotel room. Yesterday I had bought him a laptop in the hopes of keeping him entertained mostly so Rameses didn't kill him given how irritable he was right now having nearly bitten Danny several times that I had seen. At the same time I had bought myself a phone and laptop as well as a phone for Danny and set up a phone bill to automatically bill my card, at the very least if we got separated we could contact each other.

I had done a second run for groceries today since as it turned out feeding a grown man, myself, and a giant cat took a lot of food. I mostly focused on non-perishables in case Jasper came back early and we could get moving, it was a bit nerve wracking not knowing where Cas was or when she might show up. I really shouldn't be worried since she would probably be following Jasper and not me but it bugged me nonetheless. Most of my time in the hotel room was spent reading while Danny watched TV and Rameses laid on the floor, I was trying to learn as much about magic as I could I didn't want to get caught flat-footed the next time Cas showed up.

The book Seth had given me in the diner had turned out to be my dad's journal from his younger years which had proven to be easier to learn from that most of the books aunt Maya had got for me. I had learned how to make soft stone turn to sand and dust mostly sandstone which was common here but I was still having trouble with tougher stone and larger rocks. Another thing I had learned was how to insight others to violence it was honestly simple the way he explained it in his journal by becoming stressed and fearful the emotion would leak out causing others to become tense and fearful but they wouldn't know why. This would then cause them to start fights, he called it the natural human reaction to unknown fear.

It was strange reading about magic from my dad's point of view it was more like hearing about it from someone my age rather than my dad lecturing me from beyond the grave. He talked about his father my grandfather with his pride and attitude and about his mother who doted on him. Then there was aunt Maya he called her vindictive and envious but still seemed to care about her. He mentioned several times he tried to reach out but there was never any mention of the outcome, he always got distracted by something else a lesson from his father or whatever new gift his mother had gotten him.

Halfway through there was a mention of Setehk and it coincided with my dad getting a spirit familiar of his own that he named Wapasha. Apparently Setehk had not been pleased and rather disliked Wapasha who turned out to be a spirit from the Victorian age. Aside from the one mention I had yet to come across another it was almost as if Setehk had nothing to do with his life.

It was while I was reading the journal that Rameses temper finally broke as Danny passed a bit too close accidentally stepping on Rameses swishing tail. It hadn't been the first time this had happened but usually it led to a quiet growl and an apology from Danny, this time though was different. Rameses jumped up swiping at Danny with a roar as Danny lurched backwards falling onto the bed as Rameses was about to continue his attack.

"ENOUGH!" I yelled, Rameses froze in place one paw raised to strike Danny claws on full display. Rameses lowered his paw and sat back down but I could still feel his anger rolling off him in waves the first time I had felt emotions from him since Jasper set out. It was a swirling mix of anger and resentment and strangly enough guilt.

"You have been sulking and irritable for days. You won't talk to anyone and I've had enough of it. What is going on with you?" I asked firmly trying not to be angry since that wouldn't help anything.

"I'm going to go get ice." Danny muttered before quickly going for the door.

"It doesn't matter." Rameses spat laying back down as Danny made himself scarce.

"Doesn't matter? you just nearly tore Danny apart because he stepped on your tail." I retorted in disbelief.

"Rameses you are my familiar that means we have to work together and we can't do that if you are going to be attacking people. So if we are going to find a solution to whatever is bothering you, you need to tell me what the problem is. How else am I supposed to know where to start to fix the problem." I told him after he went silent and turned his head away.

"You want to know what the problem is. Jasper! Jasper is the problem!" Rameses roared looking me in the eye as he stood up his hackles raised.

"Jasper? Jasper hasn't even been here the past couple of days and I can't hear him so I highly doubt you can." I told him annoyed.

"You made Jasper your familiar without even asking me!" Rameses hissed sadness and betrayal mixing in with his already tumultuous emotions.

"I didn't realize I needed your permission." I replied trying to keep my voice level keeping anger and annoyance out of it. I probably should have asked him I just didn't think it was necessary since it was a temporary bond but I could see why it would upset him.

"Morgan I am your familiar I will be by your side for your entire life. You made me your familiar even though I told you to leave it alone, now you've made Jasper your familiar even though you know he and I don't get along. Now I don't even have the fact that he doesn't want to upset you to keep him from bothering me." Rameses told me his voice ragged and upset.

"What has he been saying?" I asked, I had left them talking telepathically alone because they were private conversations but I wouldn't let Jasper hurt or bully Rameses right in front of me especially when it caused this.

"It doesn't matter." Rameses said quickly meaning whatever had been said wasn't something he wanted to talk about.

"Rameses, I am sorry that I made you my familiar against your will and you're right I should have asked and I should have realized that my life isn't just mine anymore. I will try to remember that my choices affect you too in the future." I told him as I tried to wrap my arms around him in a hug, Rameses placed a paw on my back as his body started shaking.

I thought something was wrong until I remembered cats can't cry so big cats probably couldn't either, I felt it in our bond as the wall between us melted away and the feeling of reaching for comfort hit me like a sledgehammer. There wasn't much I could do when he was this big so I tried to change him back to a small cat again, this time there was none of the previous resistance as he shrunk back down to his previously small form.

"Rameses, I promise you that I will not make Jasper my permanent familiar without you being okay with it. I will find a different spell to track Jasper by the time the temporary bond ends and I promise to ask you about important decisions like this in the future." I told Rameses as I hugged him to me and just let him silently and tearlessly cry. I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked back to see Danny who tilted his head asking if there was anything he could do I hadn't even realized he had come back. I gave him a silent no at which he nodded and quietly climbed onto his bed with his laptop.
