Chapter 15
"Girls why don't you take these bags to your room and put it all away. In the morning we will begin your training." Aunt Maya told us once we had gotten back to the hotel as if what had happened at the will reading hadn't. At the very least aunt Maya could give some sort of explanation or excuse, instead she wanted to ignore it completely. Aunt Maya had already pulled the shopping bags with the supplies we had gotten and left them on the floor.
Sorcha looked like she was about to argue before turning on her heels and making a miffed retreat to our shared room. I quickly grabbed as many bags as I could before following her with Rameses dragging along one as well, I went after Sorcha since it was better to come up with a plan of action before we talked to aunt Maya. By the time I got to our room Sorcha was angrily taking stuff out of her suitcase and throwing it into her purse that aunt Maya had bought for her, I had a leather messenger that was from the same stall.
The bags were called dark scale bags, the outside of the bags looked normal and even the inner lining looked normal. The lining though was held on by clasps and when pulled back revealed a sparling array of dark crystals that interlinked like the scales of a snake. Once the lining was pulled back anything that wasn't living or had a soul could be stored in the bag which could hold as much as needed. The way the saleswoman had described it and aunt Maya had confirmed, you could pack a whole house's worth of items and still have room for the house as well.
I set Jasper's lantern on the dresser and unclasped the door to which Jasper shot out of it zooming about the room like a kid on a sugar rush. Finally the little ball of fire zoomed over to the bed where he transformed back into a human form and landed on the bed with a bounce.
"I didn't realize just how little room there is in that thing." Jasper said as he stretched.
"We can figure out something else if it's too uncomfortable?" I asked as I set my bag on the bed and set it up to move my stuff out of my trunk, Rameses jumped up beside the bag and stretched before laying down.
"Nah it's fine. Just maybe in the future I shouldn't stay in there for such a long time without getting to stretch." Jasper replied as I started moving things being careful to keep things organized in different crystals each changing color as things were stored in them. A couple of things I put in the none scaled pockets of the messenger bag so they were easier to get a hold of than what was stored in the crystal scales.
"Please tell me your sister isn't going to do something stupid." Rameses told me telepathically looking towards where Sorcha had moved on to stuffing her half of the supplies we had gotten into her bag.
"I-I really don't know, I wish I did." I replied grabbing my own bags of supplies as well to pack them away. We had gotten an array of things at the market candles, dried herbs, and crystals some of the stand out things though were two daggers although aunt Maya had made sure that we were aware that one was called an athame that could never touch blood. I should stock up on headache medicine, I could already feel the start of a stress headache.
Rameses jumped down from the bed and padded towards the bathroom, a couple of minutes of rustling later he came trotting back with something in his mouth. With a couple long strides he dropped a small pill bottle onto the bed next to my bag, I quickly downed a couple aspirin and continued packing.
As soon as Sorcha finished packing she went into the bathroom the door slamming behind her causing even Jasper to jolt up from where he had been reclining on the bed. Why couldn't thing be calm again like before the will reading. I started packing the many books as the shower turned on unfortunately there were a lot of them. At the end when I tried to put the scroll into the crystals I couldn't, guess it must be either alive or it had a soul in it either way it went into the normal bag along with another book for beginners. I put Rameses' harness into the front pocket of the bag and hooked Jasper's lantern onto the bag as well.
Sorcha came out of the bathroom in new pajamas and a towel wrapped around her hair, I was about to ask her what she thought about dad's warning but I didn't get a chance as she stormed out of the room grabbing her purse with her egg sitting inside on top of the cloth lining.
"This can't be good." Rameses said a loud jumping down from the bed again while Jasper turned into a wisp and went back into his lantern. I quickly hauled my bag over my shoulder leaving the lantern unlatched but closed. I could already hear Sorcha arguing with aunt Maya as I went into the main room with Rameses right beside me.
"Sorcha calm down so we can talk about this like rational adults." Mom placated standing beside aunt Maya across from Sorcha neither party could be called anything but angry.
"No Maya doesn't even want to talk about what happened but dad said not to trust her told her to leave us alone. So why should we trust you?" Sorcha yelled as I went over to stand beside her.
"I will not be spoken to like this and especially not by my own niece, you need to respect your elders girl." Aunt Maya spat back.
"Dad said you tried to kill him!" Sorcha screamed in anger only making me tense up more, every muscle in my body might as well have been a bowstring pulled taut.
"WHAT!" Mom yelled in surprise as my heart was beating like a snare drum in my ears I don't know what to do I just want them to stop.
"Morgan, you need to calm down." Rameses told me reaching up my leg and side to be picked up. I did as he asked where he quickly rolled onto his back so I was cradling him and began batting at my hair. It was easier to focus on Rameses rather than my family fighting.
"Morgan, don't you want to know too?" Sorcha asked bringing my attention back to the argument that had consumed the room.
"It doesn't matter. The past is the past." Aunt Maya interjected.
"Of course it matters, you tried to kill my husband. You probably told Set what he was going to do because of your stupid jealousy. Now you want to be around my daughters, I knew trusting you was a terrible idea!" Mom screamed making aunt Maya flinch.
"Why won't you just tell us what happened?!" Sorcha asked putting a hand on my shoulder as I started edging my way out of the argument, apparently I wasn't allowed to.
"Alright that's enough you lot are stressing all of us out!" Jasper yelled zooming out of the lantern and transforming to stand in between us and aunt Maya.
"Who are you?!" Aunt Maya interrogated while mom seemed unsure.
"This is Jasper he's a will o wisp. Don't change the subject." Sorcha retorted.
"So you decided to stowaway an unknown wisp do you realize how much danger you have put us all in? What if he was sent by Set." Aunt Maya asked angrily pointing accusingly at Jasper.
"I follow no gods, I'm not an idiot!" Jasper growled his hair catching alight in anger.
"I trust him more than I trust you right now." Sorcha told aunt Maya who's expression flashed with a brief look of pain before hardening in anger again.
"You were a fool to show yourself wisp, I won't let you hurt my family!" Aunt Maya yelled reaching into her own scale bag. Who knows what she had in there or what she might have that could hurt Jasper. The world seemed to slow as my chest was tightening and I could feel my eyes stinging but that was secondary I had to make this stop before someone got hurt.
"ENOUGH!!!" I screamed, silence reigned for only a moment before the building began to rumble with an eirrie groan as the floor shook underfoot. It almost felt like I was on a ship with how it was swaying something was very wrong. I didn't have much time to consider it as the floor beneath us cracked and gave way like an eggshell.
