Chapter Two
(Your POV)
I woke up at 4:30 in the morning. I don't know why. I groaned and stopped my softly playing music, sitting up in the process.
Where am I?
I looked to my left and saw Max sleeping soundly, snuggling with his stuffed brown bear.
Oh. Right. Camp.
I stepped closer and listened to his snoring.
Yep. He's not waking up for at least a couple hours.
I walked back to my bed and crouched down, searching through my backpack for clothes. I got my other pair of black jeans, a different t-shirt, and put my hoodie back on. It seemed a bit cold the night prior, so I concluded that it'd be colder this early in the morning.
I quietly unzipped the tent and stepped out, zipping it back up. It was dark, but my eyes adjusted eventually. I looked up at the stars and calmed down a bit. After relaxing, I sat back at the picnic table I sat at last night, getting a perfect view of the moonlight reflecting off of the lake water.
(Max's POV)
I woke up from loud footsteps crunching the grass outside. Rolling over on my side, I saw a figure walking past the tent. Curiosity got me, so I rubbed my eyes, got up, and silently followed the figure outside.
After my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I saw that it was (Y/N). She sat down at the same picnic table that she sat at yesterday, staring at the lake. She looked so... calm. I walked over, and she must've heard me because she turned in my direction, the same dumb expression on her face. Ugh, when will she ever show any emotion? "Hey, asshole," I started. "What're you-"
"Could you not?" she interrupted me, a tiny hint of irritation in her voice.
Huh, that's a start.
"Huh? Not what?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Could you not... curse in front of me that much? I, uh... I-I don't really like it." she briefly explained, trying to stay stern and failing miserably.
"Why the fuck not?" She flinched.
"J-Just... please, don't..." she managed to say.
She stuttered again... I guess it's a triggering thing.
There was a brief pause. "Tch. Fine, whatever." I said at last.
Wait. Did I just. What. Even. Did I just agree not to curse???
She looked down. "Thanks.."
"Uh, yeah." We both just stood there awkwardly. "Soo... did you even change your clothes from yesterday?" I asked with a snarky grin plastered on my face.
"Yes." she responded, unphased.
"Doesn't really look like it." I pushed.
She sighed. "One, I wear this hoodie almost all of the time. Two, yesterday's jeans were ripped, today's are not. And three," she pulled down the front of her hoodie to show the shirt underneath. "my shirt yesterday was red, this is orange." She let go of her hoodie and looked back at the lake.
I started looking at the lake, too, and felt a chilly breeze pass by that made me shiver.
Shit, I forgot my hoodie...
(Y/N) looked at me for a few seconds before taking her hoodie off and setting it in front of me on the table. I hesitated. "Uh, you're smaller than me."
"It's a couple sizes too big. I like wearing oversized stuff." she admitted. I wasn't going to take it, but it was freezing, so I gave in. It ended up being the perfect size for me, and it was warm. It kinda... smelled like her? It smelled nice.. Wait. What the hell?
I could feel some heat rise to my cheeks. (Y/N) noticed. "Hey, do you have a cold or something? Your face is red." She then put the back of her hand on my forehead to check the tempurature.
I didn't realize until now, but her eyes aren't half-open anymore. They're open all the way, but they still look dull.
Yes, it's possible to get some emotion out of her! Wait... she still has her hand on my forehead...
"H-Hey! Get off!" I exclaimed, backing up so she couldn't reach me.
"Hm?" She tilted her head, confused. "Well you must have a cold. Your face looks like a cherry."
I never thought I'd meet someone that can say that sentence with a dead serious face.
"N-Nah, I just.. just don't touch me, okay?"
WHY THE HELL AM I STUTTERING?!
"Understood." (Y/N) responded as she nodded. I let a breath go that I didn't know I was holding in. (Y/N) rested her head on the table, her arms forming a boundary around her head.
I hesitated before I sat across from her. I rested my head on my hands, with my elbows on the table, looking out at the lake.
No wonder she comes here. I didn't realize how cool it looks until now..
After a little while of admiring the lake, I heard light snoring. I looked at (Y/N). She was sleeping. She looked so much calmer than before, she always seems somewhat tense. I saw her shivering slightly in her sleep, so I took her hoodie off of me and placed it on her like a blanket. Then, I picked her up on my back, making sure the hoodie wouldn't fall off, and started walking back to the tent.
WHAT AM I DOING WHAT AM I DOING WHAT AM I DOING WHAT AM I DOING WHAT I AM I DOING WHAT AM I DOING-
Before I knew it, I was back at the tent. I opened the flaps, zipping them back up after, and gently placed (Y/N) on her bed. After pulling the covers over her, I went to my own bed and eventually fell asleep.
What the actual hell did I just do?!
(Your POV)
I woke up at 6:45. I started freaking out when I couldn't feel my hoodie sleeves on me. I looked all over the bed, but my hoodie was nowhere to be found. Then, I heard rustling in the other bed.
Max is awake.
Frick.
I looked over at Max, putting on my usual expression. He rubbed his eyes sleepily before asking, "Why are you making a bunch of fu- uhh... a bunch of noise?" he asked, slightly irritated.
Suddenly, I remembered that i gave my hoodie to him. But he didn't have it on. "Uhm... do you know, by any chance, where my hoodie is? I, uh.. kinda need it." I said, trying to sound serious and failing miserably.
Max tilted his head and squinted his eyes. "And why do you need it?" he inquired sternly.
I quickly put my arms behind my back. "I've just... had it for a very long time, a-and..." I trailed off as I didn't know what to say.
Come ON! I always know what to say! Don't show weakness!
I looked at him nervously as he gave me a look of, 'I don't believe you.' I mean, I wasn't lying, it was just a little part of the truth..
Oh, god...
(Max's POV)
I stared at her, my eyes saying that I didn't believe her. For once, she looked nervous, but her eyes were giving the same dull look, just opened a little more. "Why did you put your arms behind you back so quickly?" I inquired, squinting my eyes even more.
"I-I, uh..." she trailed off again. This is the first time that she doesn't know what to say. She's obviously hiding something.
We just met yesterday. If I try to pry it out of her now, she won't trust anyone here, and I won't be able to find out more.
I paused for a moment before letting it go. "Tch, fine. Your hoodie is in your backpack, I put it there after you fell asleep and I carri- u-uh... David carried you back here." I explained, lying at the end. She let out a sigh and nodded. I looked away to grab Mr. Honeynuts, and when I looked back, she already had her hoodie on. "How did you..?" I trailed off, not believing that she could put something on so fast. She just shrugged.
"BREAKFAST TIME! EVERYONE WAKE UP!" the cheery idiot yelled. I groaned.
"You gotta go to the mess hall, the big cabin that smells like shi- uh.. smells really bad."I explained.
Why am I still not cursing?!
She nodded. "Uh, since you already got dressed earlier, could you leave so I can?" I asked. She nodded again, and left with her hands in her hoodie pocket. Once I got dressed, I walked to the mess hall and the smiling idiot was there.
"Gooood morning Max! Hope you have a great day today!" he cheered.
"Yeah, yeah, sure. Where's the new kid?" I asked, trying to ignore his happiness.
"You mean (Y/N)?"
"Yeah, her."
"Um, I think she went to the picnic table by the lake." David explained.
Of course.
I groaned. "Thanks, I guess." I started walking to the picnic table and saw (Y/N) poking her 'breakfast' with a plastic fork. "Yeah, I don't think it's edible either." I said once I reached her. She turned her head to me. "Hey, I need you to meet some people." I said before grabbing her arm and starting to bring her to the mess hall. She quickly grabbed her food before she was out of reach and started walking with me. Well, it's not like she had a choice.
When we reached the mess hall, I brought her to my usual table to meet the two tolerable idiots. "Nikki! Neil! This is the new kid." I told them. They turned their heads toward us. Nikki looked happy, but Neil looked confused, for some reason.
"Hi! I'm Nikki! What's your name?" Nikki asked (Y/N) cheerfully. There was a brief pause.
"...(Y/N).." (Y/N) answered quietly, looking down slightly.
"Uh, Max?" Neil started. I turned to him and hummed in response. "Why are you holding onto her arm?" I looked down and realized that I hadn't let go of her arm yet. I felt my face heat up slightly as I quickly let go.
"Uh, I-I was bringing her here, so..." I trailed off. Nikki looked at me and did a stupid grin. "Uh, I'm gonna get a tray!" I said quickly, trying to change the subject.
"Suuure you are." Nikki responded, still with that dumb grin.
"Well what else would I be doing?!" I raised my voice and angrily stomped to where the trays were.
Ugh, Nikki can be so annoying...
I grabbed a tray and started walking back to the table. Before I got there, I saw Nikki talking nonstop to (Y/N). (Y/N) suddenly slammed her head on the table, and Nikki stopped talking. That made me chuckle. I walked over. "Ya okay? Is Nikki being annoying?" I asked with a smirk before sitting down. (Y/N) nodded, her head still on the table. I laughed and sat down. All four of us were talking. Well, (Y/N) was barely talking, but at least she was trying.
This summer is going to be interesting with her around.
