Chapter 14

We walk for only about three minutes when the snow starts. Three more minutes later and the ice joins in. Neve beams like a little girl who just got her favorite toy in the whole world for Christmas as she dances in the snow.

"This is so much fun!" She exclaims gleefully, twirling in circles like a little girl.

Suddenly, her happy attitude changes to a sad one and she looks at the ground, "If only Frost were here. She'd love this."

Kin smiles softly and gives her a quick hug, "I'm sure Frost will be fine." She says cheerfully.

Neve sniffs sadly and we keep walking.

We walk in silence for a couple of minutes before I get an idea.

"You want to go up ahead with me Neve?" I offer, cocking my head at her.

She smiles excitedly, "We can?"

I shrug, "Well, the obstacle ahead will probably need you so it couldn't hurt, right?"

Anemos opens his mouth to protest but I cut him off with a wave of my hand, "And, if we do need help, we'll come right back."

I look pointedly from the wind boy to the hopeful Neve.

After a minute Anemos sighs in defeat, gesturing for me and Neve to go ahead.

I smile at the ice elementalist and she hurries over, beaming, before jumping onto my back, her hands clamped firmly onto my shoulder.

I look back over at her, "You ready?" I ask with a mischievous smirk.

Neve suddenly looks uncertain but before she can say anything I dart forward. We shoot down the path, the farther down we go the colder it gets. My feet crunch satisfyingly on the snow and the crisp wintery air blows around us. I put on a burst of speed until it gets so cold I have to stop.

The minute I do I feel Neve stop moving in slow motion.

She gasps, "Oh my gosh Blitz! You had to do that to catch Zap?"

I nod as I let her down off me.

"Whoaa!" I say, steadying the girl as she sways dizzily.

I laugh, "A little jet lag?"

Neve rolls her eyes at me, "That's not how it works!"

"That's how it works to me!"

"Really?"

I smirk at her, "Yep!"

Suddenly a frigid breeze rolls over us and I shiver, covering myself with my arms as goosebumps pop up along my arms, legs, and face.

Neve's smile slips off her face and she bites her lip, watching me, "I'm so dumb! We should have brought Ignis!"

I shake my head firmly, feeling my fingers already start to go numb, "I'm fine. Let's just go."

Neve looks uncertain for a minute but then her face clears up and she nods. She jumps on my back again and we dart through the snow. My feet break through the surface of the fresh, clean snow. So pure and white. It actually hurts my eyes to look at it.

Running definitely helps me warm up, but soon my lungs are searing with each freezing breath I take, not to mention the burning in my limbs and the pain in my side until, once again, I have to stop.

Neve jumps off my back and squints around and I stand beside her, squeezing my eyes shut every time a cold breeze rolls over us, shivering so hard it hurts.

I start to think about death by freezing. That can happen, right? Your inside's slowly freeze until you can feel no more. I wonder how painful it would be. It couldn't be as bad as starvation, right? Or drowning? Maybe it is, I don't know, I've never froze to death before. I wonder if anyone would miss me. Would I be able to see them? I wonder how sad Dad would be. Would he have a funeral? Who would he invite? I don't really have any friends other than the Snow Ferrets.

For the first time this whole game I realize how dangerous it is. People have died in the past, but the people who are filming don't make a huge deal about it so the audience doesn't really realize that the elementalist is gone. The team with the fallen teammate continue after they have a quick funeral. They continue with a missing teammate. I wonder if anyone watching would miss me. Probably not. Do they even know my name? There's only four teams left, I don't know, maybe they do.

"BLITZ!"

I snap out of it and find myself laying in the snow, Neve terrified face in front of mine. I blink a couple of times before my brain registers the tiny white ferret beside her.

Then the pain hits me.

I groan in agony as every inch on my skin feels like it's on fire.

Neve's face breaks into relief and she starts explaining to me, "I was looking around for Frost when you fell. You fell into the snow and I heard a squeak." Neve chuckles, "Frost was there the whole time! And then I picked you up and ran as fast as I could back." She shakes her head, "You wouldn't have made it if it weren't for Ignis. She had run ahead of the others because they couldn't stand the cold. She met us halfway and started warming you up the rest of the way."

Neve starts to get teary, "It was so scary Blitz, I thought I had lost you!" She gives a wet laugh. She wipes away a small tear off her cheek.

"I thought I had lost you." She whispers. The pain over my body becomes too great and before I can respond I pass out again.

A man sneaks out of a building, closing the door quietly behind him. He's outside now, the moon shining bright in the dark, illuminating the street. He runs along it, not a living thing in sight, until he reaches a car. He jumps inside and races down the street.

Everything blurs and a new picture appears, later. The same man is talking quietly to another, their backs hunched over. A woman suddenly bursts through a door in the wall, her features angry. She shouts something at the man from earlier, pointing to the other man and then gesturing to the world. The man she's yelling at watches her stonily before his hand shoots out in front of him. A high-pitched scream rings out and when I look again, the woman is dead on the ground, her face horrified, a metal spear sticking through her head, blood pouring out. I scream as loud as I can.

She's dead....she's dead....she's been murdered in cold blood....she's dead

"BLITZ BLITZ!!! SNAP OUT OF IT!!! BLITZ!!!" A voice cries in anguish. I realize I'm screaming and I open my eyes to find Terro watching me with wide eyes. "Blitz! You're okay, it was just a dream! Just a dream!"

I am barely listening. What did I just see? It was to realistic to be a dream.....right? I try to remember what I saw but it's quickly slipping away from me. A man....murdered a woman....

"Blitz?"

I look up at Terro. He is watching me nervously.

"Are you okay?" He asks somewhat warily. I realize I'm breathing hard and sweating horribly, my hair everywhere.

I must look like a mess. Why do I suddenly feel so self-conscious?

I take a deep breath, "Yeah, yeah I'm sorry. What's happening?"

Terro looks relieved to see I'm fine and starts to explain, but he watches me closely the whole time. Apparently the others had gone and left Terro to watch over me while they went into the metal path.

"They've been gone for a while." Terro says, frowning, "They could be back any-"

"HEY!"

I roll my eyes with a smile as I hear Nero's boisterous voice reach me. Minutes later everyone is crowding around me and Kin is telling me and Terro excitedly what happened.

"We walked for forever until we came upon a giant locked door! But it was locked and had a keyhole, so I made a key out of metal, unlocked the door, and found Key!" She exclaims, beaming. Apparently her ferret's name is Key.

I smile at her happiness.

"Are you well enough to go to the last path?" Anemos asks me.

I sit up and move around to see if I am well enough before turning to him and nodding.

And that is how I found myself twenty minutes later deep underground in a tunnel that Terro is making as we go.

"Umm....is this stable?" Anemos asks nervously, pushing his glasses up on his nose as he looks around.

Terro shrugs, "It should be."

Anemos lets out a nervous squeak and rushes closer to Terro. We wander underground for about thirty minutes before we find it. An earth ferret.

Terro quickly collects him and we start running back, our feet crunching on the dirt, the smell of soil everywhere. So this is what it's like to be a mole.

I shudder. Very nerve-wracking. The whole thing could collapse on you at any moment!

I decide to go ahead and, with a salute at to the rest of my group, dart ahead, the annoyed shouts disappearing behind me. I laugh and speed it up.

I reach the end of the tunnel and sit down. As I wait for the others I subconsciously bounce my foot and tap my knee.

After ten minutes I sigh in frustration. Five more and I decide to go look for them, but just as I'm about to shoot off Nero bursts out of the tunnel, breathing heavily, dirt all over him. I topple backwards with a shout of surprise.

"GIANT MOLE!" He gasps before collapsing on the ground. My eyes widen and I quickly dart back down the tunnel, hoping everyone is okay. My heart speeds up as growling sounds reach my ears.

Two minutes later and I reach the earth mole. It's huge eyes popping and its nose twitching makes it the most adorable monster I've ever seen.

The huge beast is chasing the rest of my group. Neve and Ignis are shooting ice and fire at it over their shoulders at it, but it doesn't seem to be doing much damage as the attacks are weak out of fear.

I know what I have to do.

I get into a fighting stance and take a deep breath, trying to calm my beating heart.

I can do this. I can do this.

I glare at the rapidly approaching mole as the others run past me, shooting exhausted and nervous looks at me. I give them an encouraging smile before turning back to the beast.

It is now about thirty feet away, give or take a couple, and I can already feel my hair get staticky while my fingers tingle.

Three.

It's about twenty-five feet away now.

Two.

Twenty feet.

One!

I unleash the lightning building in my hand with such force I actually fly back a couple of feet, slamming into a wall and sliding to the ground with a groan. The mole crashes to the ground with a quick spasm, it's burnt fur filling the air with it's putrid smell.

The whole tunnel starts shaking and I look up, terrified. Dirt starts falling from the ceiling and I leap to my feet. I am drained from that attack so I am forced to run at normal speed, much to my dismay, out of the tunnel. Ignis, Neve, Anemos, Terro, and Kin are all gone, probably made it out.

I run as hard as my legs will take, not looking back. Dust fills the air as my feet pound painfully hard on the ground. My animal instinct takes over and I feel myself move faster, running away from the danger, adrenaline taking over..

My lungs get clogged with dust and my hair flies around me wildly. The exit, a bright circle of light, bounces into view and I launch myself forward as a huge rock falls from the ceiling. I leap under it, rolling to a stop while cutting myself on some rocks, and stumble to my feet again.

A small rock breaks off the ceiling and gashes my cheek, reminding me to run toward the exit once more. I am about three feet away when I leap forward again, just barely making it out before the whole thing collapses. I roll over and over as momentum takes over before I finally stop, the blood on my cheek smearing as more comes out.

Hands are all around me, helping me. Something that stings is applied to my cheek wound and I can feel bandages being placed on my multiple cuts and scratches, but all I can think of is the fact that we did it again.

We made it through another round in the Harmony Games.
