Chapter 21 - The Final Lap
The engine roared to life as the lights went out, and the entire pit lane seemed to hold its breath. The M3 shot off the line with a smooth surge, its wheels gripping the asphalt as Erin slammed the accelerator. The GT-R beside her roared to life just as quickly, Logan's car snapping ahead in the blink of an eye, but Erin wasn't far behind.
As they came into the first corner, Erin's eyes narrowed, calculating the line. She had a lot to prove today, not just to Logan, but to herself. The track was a different beast than the streets; every decision had to be precise, every turn a perfect balance between power and control.
Logan led for the first few hundred meters, his GT-R hugging the apex of the corners like it was built for them. But Erin had her own tricks. She knew the M3's strengths, its quick handling, and its ability to cut through corners with finesse. She dove into the next turn with precision, pushing the car closer to his rear bumper.
"Come on, M3. Hold tight," Erin muttered, gripping the wheel.
On the straight, she gained ground, pulling up next to Logan, feeling the power of the engine beneath her as the M3 surged forward. The GT-R's engine was powerful, but Erin knew the M3 could hold its own with proper line management. The cars raced side by side, each one inching ahead and falling back, neither gaining an advantage. The crowd on the sidelines cheered as the two competitors traded positions again and again, the race a blur of speed and skill.
Logan shot through the next series of bends with ease, but Erin wasn't giving up. With a flick of the wheel, she dove in just as the track opened up. For a split second, she took the lead. She could feel the exhilaration in her chest as her tyres bit the track, but Logan wasn't finished yet.
On the third lap, as the race neared the final stretch, Logan made his move. Erin took the corner at speed, almost perfect, except Logan wasn't where she expected him to be.
In a calculated, ruthless manoeuvre, Logan shot to the inside, cutting across her line.
Erin's eyes widened as Logan's rear fender nearly brushed her front bumper. She had no choice but to back off, slamming the brakes just enough to avoid a collision. Her car swerved, the tyres losing grip for just a moment, and in that split second, Logan took the opportunity to surge ahead.
"Damn it," Erin cursed under her breath, her fingers tightening around the wheel. She pushed the gas pedal harder, but it was too late. Logan had made his move, and he wasn't letting go.
As they powered down the straight, Erin tried to catch up, weaving through the corners with all the skill she had, but the damage was done. Logan's GT-R, built for track dominance, pulled away with each passing second, leaving Erin with no time to recover.
Crossing the finish line, Logan's car was ahead by a fraction of a second. The roar of the crowd echoed around them, but Erin couldn't hear it. All she could hear was the beating of her own heart. She had come so close.
Logan slowed as he crossed the line, giving her a victorious glance in his rearview mirror. He flashed a grin, his smirk still there, but it was tinged with the satisfaction of a hard-won victory.
Erin's car coasted to a stop just after the line, and she let out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. She took off her helmet, her hands shaking, but her expression was a mixture of frustration and pride.
She hadn't won, but damn, she had pushed him.
The crew quickly approached, Dax and Rev both jogging over to her as she stepped out of the M3. Dax's expression was unreadable, but Rev was the first to speak. "Erin..." He trailed off, trying to find the words. "You killed it out there. Seriously."
Erin took a deep breath, wiping the sweat from her brow. "Yeah, I didn't win, but I gave him a hell of a run."
Logan pulled his GT-R into the pit area, sliding to a smooth stop before stepping out of the car. He looked back at Erin, raising a hand as if to offer some kind of respect.
"I'll give you that," Logan called over, walking toward her with his usual swagger. "You pushed me harder than I thought you would. But in the end, you just couldn't match the edge."
Erin wiped a loose strand of hair from her face and straightened, meeting his gaze with quiet defiance. "I didn't lose. Not by a long shot."
Logan chuckled, a cocky glint in his eye. "Sure you did. But next time... who knows? Maybe you'll have a chance." He clapped her on the shoulder as he walked past, but Erin didn't flinch.
"Yeah," Erin said quietly to herself. "Next time."
Rev put a hand on her back as they watched Logan walk away. "You gave him a hell of a race. That was no fluke."
Dax nodded in agreement. "You showed him what you're made of, Ace. That's what matters."
Erin smiled weakly, still feeling the sting of defeat, but the adrenaline hadn't worn off. She had done something most people wouldn't dare do. She had taken on Logan in a track race and nearly beaten him. That was something to be proud of.
"I'm not done yet," she said, her voice steady. "This isn't over. We'll get him next time."
The crew exchanged looks. They knew this race was only the beginning.
