Chapter 20 - The Final Hour
Race day had arrived.
The atmosphere was electric, filled with the hum of engines warming up, tyres being prepped, and the low murmur of spectators in the stands. Erin stood in the pit garage, the faint smell of fuel and rubber lingering in the air. The sun had just begun to climb, casting long shadows over the track as the crew got everything in place.
Erin's M3 was under wraps, hidden behind the garage's closed doors, away from prying eyes. There was a strict rule about no reveals until the last minute, and it wasn't just about the surprise. It was about keeping everything quiet until the race began.
The crew was in their usual pre-race state of nervous energy, but Erin had a focused, calm demeanour, her thoughts on nothing but the track ahead.
Dax adjusted his gloves, his eyes scanning over the setup, making sure everything was in order. Rev paced back and forth, occasionally glancing at the clock, muttering under his breath. Jinx was huddled with a tablet, going over final adjustments on the car's systems.
"Yo, you good?" Erin asked Rev, her voice cutting through the tension.
Jesse barely looked up from the screen of his phone. "Yeah. I'm just... I don't know. I've got a bad feeling."
"About what?"
Rev stopped pacing, turning to look at her, a frown on his face. "About Logan's car. I don't know, Erin. I've been hearing rumours. It's supposed to be insane. And the thing is..." He trailed off, glancing at the garage door. "It's not just power, y'know? It's built to dominate on a track, too."
Erin's brows furrowed, but she remained calm. "We knew this wasn't gonna be easy. We've worked too hard to back down now."
Rev shook his head, anxiety creeping into his voice. "It's not about backing down. I'm just saying... his setup is going to be a hell of a challenge."
Just as he finished speaking, the sound of an engine revving filled the air, and the pit lane erupted in a series of excited shouts. The massive doors of the adjacent garage started to open, revealing a sleek, menacing shape.
The crowd began to murmur as a low rumble echoed through the pit area. Erin, Dax, and Rev all turned, eyes immediately locking onto the car as it rolled out into the sunlight.
Logan's car.
The beast on four wheels was nothing like what they expected. A blacked-out Nissan GT-R R35, its aggressive lines and wide-body stance sent a chill through the pit. It looked like a machine built for destruction, not just speed.
Logan stood beside the car, leaning against the hood with a smirk, his arms crossed. The car's sleek, carbon-fibre details were a direct contrast to the typical street cars in the pit. This was something built with nothing but track performance in mind. The custom aero, the massive rear wing, and the wide fenders screamed speed—this was a machine that could eat up a track without breaking a sweat.
Rev's face paled as he stared at the GT-R. "That thing..." He gulped, his eyes wide. "It's... insane."
Dax, standing beside him, didn't speak, but his jaw tightened. Erin could feel the shift in energy. Rev's worries had become more than just a gut feeling. This car... was a monster.
Erin remained calm, walking up to the pit wall and crossing her arms as she observed Logan's car. "I knew it was gonna be bad, but damn. He really went all out."
"He's got a ridiculous edge," Rev muttered, a hint of panic in his voice. "We've got the power, but I don't know if we've got the handling to keep up."
Erin turned to face her team, her expression unwavering. "We've got more than power. We've got precision. And we've worked on the M3 to be as ready as we can. Don't forget what this car's capable of."
Jinx stepped forward, tapping his tablet one last time. "I did everything I could to fine-tune her. The aero's solid, the suspension's locked down, and we've got the braking power to make up for the straights."
The tension in the garage was palpable, but Erin stood tall. The M3 was her work of art, her creation. Every corner of it was set up for the track, not the street, not some rogue race through downtown. The GT-R had power and handling, but Erin knew her car had the edge where it counted.
With a deep breath, Erin turned her attention back to the track. Logan had raised the bar, but she wasn't backing down. This race wasn't just about beating him, it was about showing herself, her crew, and everyone who'd ever doubted her that she was here to win.
But doing this. Racing again. It was the one thing she had sworn to Jamie she would never do again. And Dax knew about that promise.
The crowd started to gather at the starting line, a low hum of excitement spreading across the air. The announcement came through, the track official calling out the race conditions, the cars readying themselves. Logan's confident smirk was visible even from here, but Erin didn't flinch.
This wasn't a street race. This was a showdown.
"Let's do this," she said, as her crew made their final checks.
Dax nodded, clapping her on the back. "You've got this, Erin. Show him what we've built. This has nothing to do with anything else, just you."
Even side glancing at him, Erin knew what he was referring to without even having to say a word... or a name.
Rev still looked unsure, but when Erin met his gaze, she saw the hesitation in his eyes, and then, slowly, a small nod. "Alright," Rev muttered. "Let's see what happens."
Erin climbed into the M3, strapping herself in, her heartbeat steady despite the storm of adrenaline swirling inside her. She glanced at her crew one last time.
"Stay sharp," she said to them through her helmet, voice low.
As the starting lights began to flicker on the starting grid, she knew one thing for certain: this was going to be a race for the ages.
