Volleyball
CHAPTER 58
TRIS POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's been a stressful week and I'm still holding a grudge. Tobias needs to learn that when I say that nobody should know, that nobody should know.
Today's back to school. Gross. I'm currently at Tori's getting ready and since Tori always has to be there early, that means I have to go early too. Yay.
I get there at 7 and just organize my locker while I'm waiting for the first few people to begin to arrive. I take out all the stupid papers they gave us and just throw it out and put my books leaning against one another on my shelves.
I have a back appointment with Colby today and I'm honestly a little nervous because it hasn't been feeling very well the last few days and considering that it's been a couple weeks since the last real beating, I mean it should be better.
I hear a squeal behind me and Christina comes running up to me, beginning to open her locker.
"What is it this time?" I sigh, rolling my eyes.
"We have an assembly today, so shortened classes! Yayayay! Less gym time for me!" Christina yells jumping up and down.
"Finally less Jeanine," I mutter and literally two seconds later, guess who passes by? Jeanine, of course giving me a dirty look. Oops. Whatever.
I quickly make my way to homeroom before announcements begin and play on my phone ignoring everyone as they file in.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Tobias sit down next to me and he turns to look at me. I turn in the other direction and I hear him sigh.
"So I take it that you're single now, huh babe," I hear that evil voice purr to the right side of me.
Without thinking, I stand up and face Lauren.
"I think you should walk away," I growl.
She smirks. "You're really going to let her talk to me like this," Lauren asks looking down at Tobias.
Tobias looks up at the both of us confused and then looks behind him for the help of Zeke.
"He is dating someone," I say through clenched teeth to Lauren.
"Who? You! That's funny that you think he likes you for you. He just can't break up with you now that he knows you're story and everyone else does too," Lauren glares at me.
"That is a lie," I say quietly.
"Oh I don't think so."
I feel my hands clench into fists and I punch her right in the gut. She falls to her knees but quickly stands back up and swings on me which I narrowly avoid. She runs at me, but Tobias grabs her around the waist and drags her up the aisle of seats and pushes her into Eric saying, "I believe this is yours."
I sit back down as the teacher walks in and Tobias walks in front of my desk and stares into my eyes for a moment before asking, "are you alright?"
I just nod and he sits back down next to me.
We get dismissed to block 1 which is art with Tori. We sketch animals into scratch paper and soon enough it is math with Jeneane. Tobias, Christina, and I walk down the halls Christina babbling on about who knows what. Just as we make the left turn, Christina makes a right turn.
"What are you doing? Math is this way," I say confused.
"Oh, I know," she says brightly.
"Okay, well then how come you're going that way instead of this way?" I ask slowly.
"Oh because! My schedule got changed. I have algebra 1 block 3 now. Block 2 I have science or something," Christina explains.
"Christina, algebra 1 is a 9th grade class..... We are in the 11th grade...." I trail off not knowing what to say.
"Yeah, turns out I never learned any math at all. Ha funny I know. I copied off Will in 9th grade, Marlene in 10th grade, and you for the first part of the year until we got moved away from each other and Jeanine realized I knew nothing. It's really funny! Bye!" She skips off and I shake my head.
Tobias and I walk in just as the bell rings and Jeneane starts lecturing about sequences and expressions and I doodle on the paper until the door bursts open and Zeke runs in.
I stifle a laugh. He's really late. Jeanine is going to kill him.
"Mr. Pedrad. How nice of you to join us. Would you like to tell everyone why you are 19 minutes late?" Jeanine asks with a snarl.
"Ummmm.... Ummmmmm... Ummmm..." Zeke looks around the room trying to think of an excuse or remember what he was doing when class started.
"Mr. Pedrad! If you do not have a valid explanation I might just have to write you up!" Jeanine yells.
"No! I remember! I remember."
"Well, we're waiting."
"Someone told me to go to Hell. I couldn't find it at first. But, now I'm here," Zeke clasps his hands together.
The entire class roars with laughter and Jeanine angrily grabs Zeke by the arm and drags him out into the hallway.
They walk in a few minutes later, Zeke red-faced, but winks when he sees us.
Soon after that, the bell rings and I make my way towards the door but Jeanine stops me, calling my name.
"Yes?" I ask nervously.
"I just want to offer you my sympathy. I had no idea that what going on and I just want to let you know that if you can't complete the homework, then that is alright. Just do what you feel up too."
"Okay, thank you, Mrs. Matthews," I say and quickly walk out of that classroom. As if she's being nice for real.
I find Tobias waiting outside the door for me and he straightens as I walk out.
"Tris, when are you going to stop ignoring me?" He asks.
"When you stop sharing my secrets with the rest of the world," I say simply.
I walk into science and Mr. Matthews greets everyone and starts talking about DNA and I basically tune him out and the next thing I know, the bell is ringing, signaling that we can move into our next class.
I walk into gym and wait for everyone to change. I'm still out of gym so I can't do anything but keep track of and write the scores on the movable chalk board.
"Everyone out of the locker rooms! I'm splitting everyone up." Amat yells and everyone jogs out.
"Now, Four, Will, Peter, Zeke, Caleb, Lynn, Shauna, Abby, and Clarissa. You're all going outside to play capture the flag. Split up into two teams. Be ready when Coach Max comes out. The rest of you! Split up into two teams and blondie, you're going to be in here with me keeping score. Everyone move now!" Amar commands.
The teams are Christina, Marlene, Uriah, Edward, and Myrna against Eric, Lauren, Drew, Molly, and Al.
"We are going to be playing volleyball. Here everyone take a ball and begin bumping it to yourself." Amar sets up the net and I write Home and Guest on the chalkboard.
Eventually, they start playing the game, but honestly everyone was terrible.
"Stop, stop, stop! You're all awful. Get in partnerships and actually figure out how to hit the ball and get it over the net." Amar yells.
I turn to the board and begin to draw a flower. It's turning out pretty well, when suddenly I feel something hard hit my back.
I let out a strangled gasp and turn around to see Eric smirking and then shrugging his shoulders as if it was an accident.
"Tris! Are you okay?" Christina asks, worry in her eyes.
"I'm fine," I lie.
Eric put a lot of force into that throw and it hit right where it was sore. I ignore the throbbing pain and turn back to the board, so nobody can see me bite my lip in pain. I begin to add on to the flower when again another volleyball hits with such force, you would think it got shot out of a cannon.
I resist the urge to cry out in pain. I whirl around to see everybody high-fiving Al. Al! Out of all the people!
"That was not an accident!" I hear Christina begin screaming at Al and all he does is roll his eyes and walk away. That stupid idiot. That's all I can say. Amar walks back into the gym and looks towards the chalkboard.
"Blondie! Erase that flower right now! This is no art class!" He yells.
I sigh and turn to the board to erase my amazing flower.
Just as I am about to face everybody once again, another ball hits my back in one of the most sensitive spots. A searing pain rips through my entire body and I hear a whimper escape through my sealed lips. A laugh runs through the guest team or well I should really just say Eric and his minions. Why are they doing this to me?
I hear Amar begin yelling at them about how it isn't polite to throw things at people and I see Christina rush to my side.
"I can't believe them!" Christina yells.
"Does it hurt, Tris?" Marlene asks jogging over.
"I'm fine," I say as a dizzy spell takes ahold of me and pulls me to the left, towards the board.
"You're so not okay! Sit down!" Christina screams.
"Chris, I'm fine. Stop yelling," I say quietly.
I grab onto chalkboard to steady myself and Christina and Marlene start whispers things to each other and Uriah runs over and tells them something which they both agree too.
Marlene and Uriah each take one of my arms and begin to lead me to the bleachers.
But, of course not before someone throws another ball at me. This time, though, it's smaller and way harder.
I feel another searing pain run through my body as my knees collapse on me.
"Lauren! That wasn't even a volleyball, that was a softball! What the heck!" Christina screeches.
Marlene had grabbed me before I had fallen completely and I feel her and Uriah supporting me now.
"Make it stop...." I hear myself moan.
"What do we do!" Marlene asks Uriah frantically.
I feel myself begin to retreat into the darkness and I hear three words that shouldn't have been said. Especially the third word.
"Just get Tobias....."
