Chapter 24: Code Black

Richard knew he had to tell them. Vanellope already had known he was human—but what this was, was new information. Plus, Surge didn't know either things. All he knew was the lie that Richard is from a made up game. Richard swallowed hard, opened his mouth... and nothing came out. He just stood there, wordless, and looking like an idiot as Surge and Vanellope watched him, waiting for him to say anything.

"Uhhh..." Vanellope blinked. "Are you going to say something?"

Richard cleared his throat. "Where are Rancis, Swizzle, and Gloyd?" he asked, steeling himself. Those were the only ones he wanted to tell—for now—not Surge, who could supposedly end him with a thought. He remembered how some people here didn't like the story of Kid Powers as Rancis told him, although, Surge and Vanellope already had a possible idea, since 'Kid Powers' was on the tunnel entryway.

"Richard, you know this. You cannot go to them now. The Arcade is running," Surge said.

Richard let out an exasperated grunt. "Drat, I forgot about that..." He covered his face, nerves tightening in his chest. He had a lot of stress at the moment. He knows that the game characters did not like the idea of Kid Powers, and the fact that he is literally him, would not end well, or, at least he thought it wouldn't end well. He lowered his hands from his eyes, and glanced at the two who were eying him. "Guys... This... I'm..."

Surge blinked, waiting.

Richard drew a shuddering breath. "Okay... I'm... not actually a video-game character. Well—I am one, but I wasn't always. I was human. I—" He trailed off, seeing Surge's eyes widen in shock. "I got... accidentally sent here. Then I went back, found out I'm Kid Powers, and... I don't know. I'm actually  so lost." He sank his gaze to the station floor. "I wanna go visit racers." He turned to leave—only to have Surge yank him back by the arm.

"Wait! You can't go in there now as I said," Surge warned, voice low. "They're in their game. You do not want to cause glitches, do you?"

Richard sighed and straightened his shirt. "Right. I forgot... Again..."

Surge picked up his clipboard and pen off of the ground, clicking the tip open of the pen. He jotted something down. "Okay, go sit on a bench," he instructed, nodding toward a nearby seat in the station, "While I-," He glanced up at the Kid Powers's entrance. "Figure... out what to do with this, and you..."

Richard flopped onto the station bench and exhaled a heavy, tired sigh. His hands rubbed across his face as though he could wipe away the chaos in his head. Memories from his old life flickered, then vanished like illusions. How could he even begin to explain this to his boyfriends—is he really saying that now?—Especially when Kid Powers was so deeply unpopular around here with the other characters. He didn't want to freak them out.

And he couldn't help but remember Vanellope's reaction of him searching fro him on the internet.. She definitely wouldn't-

Suddenly, there was sound beside Richard that cut him off from his thoughts. He turned his head, and saw that Vanellope was sitting beside him.

"Oh... hey," Richard mumbled.

"Hi," Vanellope responded softly. She softly twiddled her hoodie strings, then glanced up at Richard. "So... uh... you're..."

Richard slumped against the bench. "I don't even know. Everything feels... warped." he mumbled. "Nothing feels normal anymore... I don't feel real,"

"It's okay," she murmured, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You'll figure it out."

Richard gently looked up from his hands, and looked over at Vanellope. "You don't hate me now? I thought you would have—"

Vanellope shook her head, smiling. "You helped me feel seen on our way here yesterday... I'd be a terrible friend if I treated you differently now. You helped me out by making feel better about my decision of leaving here years ago,"

Richard blinked, feeling warm at that. He looked forward for a moment, then back at the tiny ex-racer. "I... about Kid Powers making all game characters alive... I... that wasn't me," he noticed Vanellope looking at him. Richard let out another sigh. "It was a virus... that was created alongside me... that was the issue. That thing was what caused it..."

Vanellope's eyebrows arched. "A virus?"

Richard nodded. "Danger Kid... that's it's name. Apparently a prototype version of me that never made the cut. It's completely ruthless..." Richard blinked.

"Huh..." Vanellope said, looking intrigued. "A prototype of you... So... So... what was the entire thing about you being a human?"

Richard shook his head. "Vanellope I don't really know... I... I was some form of an experiment. Well, was supposed to be one. The first A.I being to be in the real world or whatever. Well, it worked, but something apparently happened to my brain in the process and my memories got all jumbled. No idea why though,"

'Something about me being exposed to humanity...' Richard mumbled to himself, remembering what Danger Kid had said.

Richard noticed Surge going around, checking all of the game entrances. "What's he-... didn't he do that already?"

Vanellope nodded. "Yeah, I think he has anxiety," she softly laughed. "Turbo does that to you," she shook her head. "Ever since he just never stops checking the gates. Sometimes he pretends he doesn't know what's he doing, but trust me... if someone is an actual threat, he'd know,"

Surge continued to do his rounds, but as he circled back around towards the two, they could hear him mumbling something. "Something isn't right..." He twirled his pen in his fingers.

"What's wrong blue-light?" Vanellope asked.

Surge looked down the station. "You don't... feel that weird feeling...?" Surge gritted his teeth. "Something feels like bad code..."

Vanellope blinked, her eyes glanced at Kid Powers entrances.

"And it's surprisingly not that..." Surge mumbled.

Richard looked at Surge, then at the entrance to his game. Then... he too got a weird feeling. Something didn't feel... right. He blinked, looking around the station. He and Surge were doing the same thing.

Vanellope looked incredibly confused looking back at Surge and Richard, "Okay... what are you two weirdos doing-?" She blinked. "Why are you both acting weird?"

Richard glanced over to one of the entrances, and saw a shadowy figure slither into the entrance. Glancing upward to read the name, it was Sugar Rush. "No..." Richard muttered to himself. He killed it didn't he? Why was it back?

Richard patted his pants, and felt around his pocket. He still had the antivirus flash with him. He grasped his pocket, and suddenly sprung up from the station bench.

"Woah! Richard? Where you are going?" Vanellope gasped out, surprised from how suddenly Richard got up.

Surge noticed, ran up to Richard, holding him in place. "I told you, you cannot go to Sugar Rush right now... you'd put yourself and the racers in danger!"

"But... something went inside the entrance! I think it was a virus!" Richard yelled.

Surge, still holding his arm, sighed, "I know something is weird in the air right now, there is bad code around... but you're sure you're not just saying that to get to your partners?"

Richard wriggled out of Surge's gasp, and ran up to the entrance to the candy game.

"Richard, wait!" Surge jogged up to him, passing him, then up to the gateway. He took out his pen, pressed something, and a mechanical piece shot out from the top.

Richard stopped. "What is that?"

Surge stepped into threshold of the Sugar Rush entrance, aiming the pen in the air. There was a buzzing sound coming from the writing utensil.

Richard folded his arms. "What is that? The pen version of a sonic screwdriver?"

Surge lowered his arms, then pen turned off, and the buzzing stopped. There was a click sound, and the pen started to make a alarm sound, just, not too loud.

Warning... Warning... Deadly Virus Detected... Located In.., Sugar Rush...

"What..." Vanellope's eyes widen in shock.

Richard face fell into a scowl. That thing didn't die... or, there was another version.

Surge slowly lowered the pen. "Vanellope? Richard? Help me evacuate Sugar Rush... we have a Code Black..."

Richard pushed past Surge, and ran deeper into the entrance.

"Richard wait!" Surge yelled. "Don't go in there alone! We don't know what this virus is capable of! So far it's looking worse then Turbo!"

But Surge's words meant nothing now. Richard didn't want his three partners in any danger.

"How is he going to run all the way?!" Surge yelled, watching Richard run deeper in.

Richard's mind went blank. There was two methods to go into Sugar Rush, the train, or the rainbow road. But he decided to run all the way, he forgot about the train. As he was running, something changed in his mind. As he was running down the tunnel, he felt his body got lighter, and faster. His body felt as if it was floating.

But he tried to push it all aside, he just wanted to get outside in the game. He flew out of the entrance, into the candy landscape of Sugar Rush, but then he realized he couldn't stop. It was at that moment, Richard regained control of his emotions and mind, and slowed himself to a sudden stop. He looked down, and noticed that he was in the air. He let out a breathless sound, and his eyes darted all around. "I'm..." He blinked. "I'm flying?!"

Then it finally settled in. "Holy SHIT!" He yelled. "I'm fucking flying!!!" Then suddenly, he lost his balance, and dipped downward. "Eeaah?!" He screeched out. He tried to hover back up, but he couldn't, and he slammed onto the ground, and gram cracker dust flew all over.

Richard coughed as he stood up, then wiped crumbs from his mouth, and licked his lips. "At least it tastes good." He wheezed, then scanned the sky—and froze. A shadowy figure loomed above, drifting away into the distance. It was flying through the air, heading to who knows where.

Richard, now knowing he has powers as the game character he is, he crouched down, and felt a build up within his body. He closed his eyes, soaking in the energy, then took off into the air, heading towards the anomaly, into the cotton candy clouds.
