Chapter 24
"Harry, just give up now, I'm kicking your ass." I laughed, blowing my hair out of my face.
"Are you kidding? I'm almost in second place!" He exclaimed, jerking his controller.
"Suck on that!" I shouted, crossing the finish line and throwing my hands up in victory.
"Dammit."
I set the controller down and turned off the game. Liam was out at dinner with his parents, Sam was hanging out with Amber and the other guys went out to some dance club to "pick up the ladies". Harry and I had stayed behind because we didn't want our names getting in the tabloids anymore. After his incidence with getting caught with a prostitute, I could see why.
As for me, I'm tired of being so exploited. How people deal with fame keeps me wondering. What makes me even more curious is how people can actually enjoy it. Crave it even. Liam has been hanging out with Carol more lately, and it seems like that's the only thing worth talking about anymore. All of the magazine covers have a picture of me vs. Carol, with Liam in the middle.
We're not on a freaking teenage werewolf t.v. show, okay?
"You want anything to eat?" Harry called from the kitchen.
My phone buzzed and I saw it was from Niall.
Can you come pick us up? We're all drunk off our asses XD
Lovely.
"I can't. I have to go pick up the guys." I sighed, grabbing my car keys out of the bowl on the table.
"Good luck!" He shouted as I closed the door.
I walked towards my car and saw another one pulling in. It was Liam's black, vintage mustang. Carol opened her door and got out.
"Hi, Diana!" She called, waving her hands as if I couldn't see her.
I forced a smile and waved back, speed walking to my car. I got in and started it up, turning my lights on. Before I could pull out, I heard a knock on my window. I rolled it down and Liam smiled at me.
"Where you going?" He asked.
"I have to pick up the guys. They're all drunk." I sighed.
"Here, we'll go with you." He replied, starting to open the door.
"No, then there won't be enough room in the car." I improvised, knowing that if I told him how much Carol pissed me off, it would upset him.
"Oh." Liam mumbled, scratching his head. I could tell he was trying to figure out a way to make this work.
"Okay, well, I really have to go. I'll see you later." I quickly told him, giving him a kiss and backing out of the driveway.
I glanced in my rear view mirror and saw Liam standing there, a sad look on his face. I sighed and rubbed my hand across my forehead. Lying to your boyfriend is the worst. It's especially bad when you're lying to him because you despise his best friend. In this case, Carol is the best friend and I'm the douche bag who makes him choose.
I focused hard on the road, trying to just forget about everything that's been going on lately. Liam, Carol, the paparazzi...they were all making my life into some kind of unbearable hell. I turned the knob for volume on the radio and clicked a station. Fireproof was on. I changed it quickly and listened as the radio station introduced a "special guest".
"Why don't you tell our radio audience who we're speaking with today." The host said in a cheesy voice.
Whoever he was talking to cleared their throat and laughed. "Hello, everyone. My name is Caroline Summers."
My body tensed at the name and I swallowed the lump building up in my throat.
"Why don't you tell us why you're so important right now?" The guy asked.
"Well David, I happen to have a bit of...insider information." Caroline replied.
"Come on, Caroline spill! Who's it about?"
I felt my heart speed up as I parked the car in front of the raging club. I turned up the volume and listened to Caroline talk about how she "wasn't sure she should say". For Christ's sake, she was already on the damn radio, we all knew she was going to tell us. I waited and listened for another ten minutes, but still nothing.
"Okay, I guess, since I'm already here, I could give you a hint."
This was definitely the Caroline I knew and hated. Grabbing someone's attention by only giving out bits and pieces about what was happening. God, she craved attention so much that she would go on a radio show where she was supposed to spill a secret and then make it all about her.
"The celebrity I have inside news on is, the one, the only-"
"Diana, thank God!" Niall drunkenly shouted, swinging open the car door and falling in the parking lot.
"Niall!" I screamed, turning up the radio to try and hear more, but when he had fallen he had hit one of the buttons on the radio. "Dammit!"
"What's wrong?" Louis asked, burping loudly then laughing.
I took a deep breath, trying to collect myself. Niall had just ruined my chance of learning about who Caroline was talking about, but he was still just a very, very drunk friend of mine and he needed someone to pick him up. Literally.
I got out of the car and watched as Louis tried to pull Niall up and just fell on him, instead. They both burst out laughing, hiccuping every once and a while.
"Come on guys." I huffed, grabbing Louis's hand and pulling him to his feet. I then grabbed Niall's hand and attempted to help him up, but he pulled me down instead, as they both erupted into giggles again.
"Guys!" I screamed, causing them both to fall completely silent.
I let out a breath and stood up, pulling Niall up and leaving them both quiet like little kids who had just been put in time out. I looked around and realized that someone was missing.
"Where the hell is Zayn?" I asked.
"Oh you know." Louis giggled, nudging Niall was his elbow making Niall start laughing too.
"That's it." I said, putting my hair into a ponytail. "Get in. Both of you, now." I pointed inside the car and watched as they followed my directions.
I locked the doors, knowing they were too drunk to find their way out and went inside to find Zayn.
