Chapter 7

A year had passed in the blink of an eye, and beneath the calm surface of the Hidden Leaf, the fragile balance of power was quietly shifting.
Naruto had grown taller, his movements lighter, almost soundless. To the rest of the Academy, he remained a quiet, uninteresting wallflower who barely squeezed by in his exams, perfectly content with low-average scores. To the hidden observers of ROOT, he was an unpredictable anomaly that had seemingly settled back into mediocrity.
In reality, Naruto was orchestrating a quiet revolution right under the village's nose.
In a secluded, overgrown clearing deep within the Training Grounds-far beyond the usual boundaries monitored by village patrols-the air rippled with intense, controlled energy.
Yakumo stood at the center of a clearing, her eyes closed, her breathing slow and measured. Floating around her were dozens of delicate, glowing paper cranes. A year ago, her body had been too weak to handle her clan's terrifying Kekkei Genkai, and her mind had been terrorized by the monstrous id, Ido, born from her repressed hatred. But under Naruto's guidance-and the brutal, efficient chakra control exercises he had drilled into her-she had learned to master her own psyche.
With a flick of her wrist, the paper cranes scattered into a sudden, blinding storm of razor-sharp illusions, slicing through three wooden training dummies in a display of frighteningly real physical destruction. She didn't look exhausted or sickly anymore; her stance was solid, her dark eyes clear and confident.
A few yards away, Sai sat on a tree root, a sketchbook resting on his knees. His brush moved with fluid, blinding speed across the paper. With a subtle pulse of ink-infused chakra, three black-inked lions leaped off the parchment, silently patrolling the perimeter of the clearing before melting back into liquid shadow.
Sai lowered his brush, his pale face devoid of his old, artificial ROOT smile. Over the past year, he had stopped reporting Naruto's progress to Danzo altogether, feeding his master precise, carefully engineered lies. For the first time in his life, Sai wasn't acting on orders. He had found a brotherhood, a purpose, and a home among the outcasts.
"Your control on the third dummy was off by two inches, Yakumo," Naruto's voice called out from the canopy above.
He dropped down silently from a high branch, landing on the grass without making a sound or displacing a single blade of grass. He wore a simple, dark high-collared shirt and black shinobi pants, his blue eyes holding that same calm, ancient depth that seemed far beyond his nine years.
"I was trying to avoid the bird's nest in the tree behind it," Yakumo replied, wiping a light sheen of sweat from her forehead with a small smile. "I didn't want to destroy it."
"Mercy is fine, as long as it's a choice, not an accident," Naruto said, leaning against a tree trunk. He looked over at Sai. "How are the surveillance rotations looking?"
"Danzo-sama has reduced the guards around your apartment by half," Sai reported, his tone entirely natural now, devoid of the robotic cadence he once carried. "He believes you have reached the absolute limit of your potential and that your sudden surge of talent a year ago was merely a fluke caused by the Nine-Tails' leaking chakra. He has turned his focus elsewhere for now."
"Good," Naruto murmured, looking up at the afternoon sky filtering through the leaves. "Let him think he's won. The moment a predator thinks its prey is harmless is the moment it becomes careless."
"And what about the Hokage?" Yakumo asked softly, stepping closer. "Kurenai-sensei still looks at me with guilt every time she sees me in the village. Lord Third hasn't tried to force me back into the Kurama compound, but... he's watching you, Naruto."
"Jiji is waiting for me to make a mistake," Naruto said quietly. "He thinks I'm going down a dark path. He doesn't understand that I'm not looking for revenge, nor am I looking for power for the sake of ruling. I just want a village where kids like us don't have to be broken to be useful."
Deep within the dark, flooded sewers of his mindscape, Kurama lay stretched out behind the massive iron gates, his golden-red eyes gleaming in the shadows. He watched the three kids through Naruto's senses, letting out a low, rumbling huff of air that sent small ripples across the water.
"The brat is building a shadow force of his own," Kurama thought, a dark, amused grin spreading across his fanged snout. "No flashy speeches, no loud declarations of becoming Hokage... just cold, meticulous chess moves. Indra would be proud... even if the bastard is still lurking silently in the dark corners of this seal."
Naruto pushed himself off the tree trunk, looking at his two companions.
"We're heading back," Naruto said, his blue eyes glinting with quiet resolve. "The Academy graduation is coming up in two years. Until then, we keep playing our parts. Let the village see what they want to see."
"Understood," Sai nodded, rolling up his scroll.
"Right," Yakumo agreed, her confidence radiating through her chakra.
Little did they know, their journey was about to hit a turning point in their lives.
That night, at the Root Headquarters...
The area was quiet, and the tension hidden in that silence was high ad Danzo scanned through the reports about Naruto that Sai just gave.
"I have to admit: your spying skills are very good, Sai." Danzo commented as he closed the scroll.
Opposite to him, Sai was on his knees, showing his hollow mask, the same mask that fooled Danzo for the past year, or so he thought.
Danzo: "But the skills being used for the wrong purpose is pointless."
"I don't know what you're talking about, Danzo-sama." Sai commented. But then, an image flashed through his eyes: a Sharingan, with a four-razors kunai as pupils. But Sai didn't get to react as he fell unconscious.
"Trying to turn my operative against me?" Danzo narrowed his eyes. "You are more terrifying than I expected, Naruto Uzumaki."
Then, slowly, Sai woke up, and stood completely still.
Danzo: "Sai, give me everything you know of Naruto Uzumaki, and answer me truthfully."
Sai's eyes remained completely blank, devoid of any light or emotion, as the dark seals of Kotoamatsukami settled over his consciousness.
"Naruto Uzumaki possesses combat abilities far surpassing an average Jōnin," Sai spoke, his voice completely flat and monotone. "His chakra control is flawless, allowing him to suppress his presence entirely from ROOT surveillance. Over the past year, he has secretly trained Yakumo Kurama to master her clan's Kekkei Genkai, completely suppressing the monster inside her mind."
Danzo leaned forward on his wooden cane, his single exposed eye gleaming with a sharp, dark intensity.
"And his motives?" Danzo demanded, his raspy voice cutting through the silent chamber. "What is he planning?"
"He views the current leadership of Konoha as weak and incompetent," Sai replied without a second's hesitation. "He intends to reform the village's structure by eliminating any faction that threatens to control or destroy the next generation. He specifically identified ROOT as his primary target, stating that he will destroy you and dismantle your organization from its core when the time comes."
A low, cold laughter echoed from Danzo's throat-a dry, raspy sound that carried no joy. He slowly adjusted the dark bandages covering his right eye, where Shisui Uchiha's Sharingan spun slowly in its socket before settling into total darkness.
"Incredible," Danzo murmured, his grip tightening on his cane until his knuckles turned white. "The Kyūbi's vessel is not just a force of destruction... he is a strategist. A radical. A weapon with an ideology of his own."
Danzo stood up from his throne, the shadows wrapping around his tall, imposing figure.
"He thinks he can play chess from the dark," Danzo said coldly, staring down at the brainwashed boy kneeling before him. "He believes he has turned you into his ally, completely unaware that I have overwritten his influence with absolute obedience to me."
Danzo took a step toward the exit of the chamber, his mind rapidly calculating every possible variable.
"Let him continue his little game," Danzo ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Feed him false information. Let him believe you are still loyal to his cause. When the day comes that he makes his move against ROOT... you will be the blade that strikes him in the back."
"Understood, Danzo-sama," Sai replied mechanically, bowing his head to the cold stone floor.
