Chapter 6
Later, at Root Headquarters...
Deep within the subterranean corridors of the ROOT facility, the air was heavy with the smell of damp stone and stale incense. Danzo Shimura sat perched on his wooden throne in the shadows, his cane resting between his knees, the bandages over his right eye casting a stark white contrast against the gloom.
Sai knelt on one knee before him, head bowed in complete submission.
"Report," Danzo commanded, his raspy voice echoing off the concrete walls. "How was your initial contact with the Kyūbi's vessel?"
Sai's mouth opened to deliver the mechanical, precise briefing he had recited hundreds of times. He was meant to recount every detail: Naruto's defeat of Kurenai Yūhi, his sudden mastery of high-level genjutsu, and the subversion of ROOT's surveillance.
He's a coward... he's cannibalizing our own village... turning kids into empty shells because he's too paranoid to trust anyone he can't leash.
Naruto's voice echoed in Sai's mind, clashing violently against a decade of intense conditioning. The ink-drawn emotions Sai had spent years burying-the ghostly memory of his brother, the faint desire to feel something real-woke up like a sharp, agonizing itch beneath his skin. If he revealed Naruto's true intellect and his sharp critique of ROOT's doctrine, Danzo would mark the boy as an immediate threat. He would order an immediate, ruthless brainwashing or an assassination attempt.
For the first time since entering the foundation, Sai hesitated. A cold sweat broke out along his spine.
"Sai?" Danzo's single visible eye narrowed, sharp and predatory. "Is there something troubling you?"
Sai squeezed his eyes shut for a microsecond before lifting his head, forcing his face back into its empty, practiced smile.
"No, Danzo-sama," Sai said, his voice smooth and devoid of tremor. "The boy is... unorthodox. His victory over the Jōnin was an anomaly, brought about by an unrefined, chaotic surge of chakra that caught her off guard. His academic intellect remains remarkably low, and his behavior is utterly foolish."
"And his motives?" Danzo leaned forward slightly, the wooden cane clicking against the floor.
"He was merely looking for companions to buy him ramen," Sai replied smoothly. "He lacks any strategic vision or awareness of our surveillance. He is simply a lonely child desperate for attention."
Danzo stared down at the pale boy in silence for several long, suffocating seconds. The ambient chakra in the room felt oppressive, searching for any sign of deceit. Finally, the old man leaned back.
"A foolish child is easily guided when the time comes," Danzo muttered, satisfied. "Continue your observation. Keep him close, but do not let him suspect your true purpose."
"Understood, Danzo-sama," Sai bowed low, touching his forehead to the cold stone floor.
As he retreated into the shadows, his heart thudded heavily against his ribs-a strange, terrifying sensation he hadn't felt in years. He had lied to Danzo. He had protected Uzumaki Naruto.
Meanwhile, in the Hokage's office...
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.
"Come in." Hiruzen said kindly. In the next second, Naruto entered the office with a small smile.
"It has been a while since I last came here, jiji." Naruto smiled faintly at Hiruzen.
Hiruzen: "It's good to finally see you, Naruto. You not visiting me for the last year has made me worried."
"I appreciate your concern." Naruto sat down. "Was that why you sent ANBU to look out for me? If you do, I think you need to check the numbers of operatives you sent."
Hiruzen went silent for a moment. Then...
"How did you know about the ANBU, Naruto?" Hiruzen asked, trying to keep his composure.
"Something should not be said out loud, jiji. We don't know whether we're being watched or not." Naruto sighed as he glanced his eyes towards a corner of the room nears the bookshelf.
Hiruzen's senses flared for a moment, and he understood what Naruto was talking about. So he moved in a blur, and took out the Root Anbu near the bookshelf instantly.
"You know of the Root ANBU." Hiruzen said without turning around.
"Are you going to kill me because of it?" Naruto's smile then faded. "Or are you going to hand me to Danzo?"
"Of course not, Naruto." Hiruzen sighed. "But if you know how dangerous Danzo is, you must have realized that you shouldn't even mess with him."
Naruto: "I'm not going to pick a fight against him. Not now, at least. I'm just wondering why aren't you trying to expose him and put him behind bars, that's all."
Hiruzen lowered the incapacitated ROOT operative to the floor, his weathered face looking suddenly ten years older. He slowly walked back behind his broad wooden desk and sank heavily into his chair, lighting his pipe with a small flick of fire. A thick plume of gray smoke curled through the quiet air of the office.
"It is not that simple, Naruto," Hiruzen sighed, his voice echoing with a profound, weary exhaustion. "Danzo and I... we are two sides of the same coin. Where I act as the sun that illuminates the Leaf, he operates in the deep roots, absorbing the filth so the tree can blossom. He built the ROOT to handle the darkness that a Hokage's hands must never touch."
Naruto let out a short, quiet laugh-a dry, bitter sound that held no warmth whatsoever.
"The tree is rotting from the inside, jiji," Naruto said, resting his elbows on his knees as he leaned forward. "You call him the roots, but he's choking the life out of every green leaf this village produces. He took away Sai's heart. He took away Yakumo's future. He sends assassins after you, and you call it 'handling the darkness'? That's not balance. That's negligence."
Hiruzen's hand twitched against his pipe. The sharp, piercing intellect behind the boy's eyes was completely surreal-this was no longer the loud, rambunctious child who painted the Hokage Monument.
"You do not understand the weight of maintaining a Great Nation, child," Hiruzen said softly, his eyes brimming with genuine sorrow and regret. "Exposing Danzo would tear this village apart from the inside. Our enemies in Kumo and Iwa are watching us like vultures. A civil war within Konoha would be our extinction."
"So you let him sacrifice your own people to preserve a fake peace," Naruto concluded coldly, standing up from his chair. "You're keeping the peace of a dying house, jiji. If you won't pull the weed out because you're afraid of ruining the garden, then someone else is going to have to do it."
Naruto walked toward the office door, pausing just before turning the handle. He glanced over his shoulder, his blue eyes carrying a terrifyingly ancient, icy weight.
"I won't start a war in this village," Naruto murmured. "But if Danzo tries to turn me, or the people I care about, into another one of his nameless puppets... I will burn ROOT to the ground. And not even you will be able to stop me. Just ask your Genjutsu Specialist to see what I'm capable of."
Hiruzen sat motionless behind his desk, the quiet click of the closing door sounding as heavy as a vault seal. The thick smoke from his pipe hovered motionless in the stale air, mirroring the suffocating weight in his chest.
He didn't need to wonder who the "Genjutsu Specialist" was.
Reaching to the edge of his desk, Hiruzen tapped a hidden seal. Within seconds, a swirl of leaves materialized in front of him, resolving into the kneeling form of a Jōnin master. Kurenai Yūhi bowed her head, though her pale, shaken complexion was impossible to hide even in the dim light of the office.
"Lord Third," Kurenai whispered, her voice carrying a rare, fragile tremor. "You called for me?"
Hiruzen placed his pipe in the ashtray, his aging eyes fixed intently on his subordinate. "Kurenai. I received a report regarding an incident near the Academy earlier today involving Naruto Uzumaki and Yakumo Kurama. Tell me what happened."
Kurenai swallowed hard, her fists clenching against her knees. The vivid memory of the black flames and the seamless, terrifying layer of illusion came rushing back, making her skin crawl.
"I attempted to intercept Yakumo to take her back to her estate," Kurenai began, her words coming out unevenly. "Naruto challenged me to a genjutsu duel for her freedom. I accepted, intending to put him in his place safely... but before I could complete a single hand seal, I was trapped."
Hiruzen's eyes narrowed slightly. "Trapped? By a nine-year-old Academy student?"
"It wasn't just a basic genjutsu, Hokage-sama," Kurenai said, looking up with genuine fear in her eyes. "It was a perfectly executed, multi-layered reflection. He used my own chakra flow against me, layering an illusion within an illusion so fluidly that I couldn't even find the release point. If he hadn't chosen to let me go... I would still be standing in that hallway, burning."
Silence fell over the Hokage's office once more, heavier and more oppressive than before. Hiruzen looked down at his weathered hands, then toward the unconscious ROOT operative lying silently in the corner.
Naruto hadn't just learned to fight; he had learned to think, to conceal, and to strike with cold, absolute precision. The warm, cheerful boy Hiruzen thought he was protecting had transformed into a ghost right under his nose-a ghost carrying a philosophy that sounded dangerously, terrifyingly complete.
