Chapter 9

Chapter 9:
Love, Choice, and a Promise Forever

The soft, warm glow of the rooftop dining room spilled over them like a gentle embrace, mixing with the shimmering golden light of the city spread far below. The night sky was deep and clear, dotted with faint stars that seemed to watch over them, and the quiet hum of the bustling metropolis felt miles away-leaving only Kath and Gavin, wrapped in their own private world of emotion, longing, and aching love.

When the words finally left Kath's lips-"I think we need to stop this"-the smile faded instantly from Gavin's face, replaced by deep, unmistakable concern. His emerald‑green eyes, so bright and expressive, locked straight onto hers, searching her face as if trying to read every hidden thought and feeling in her heart. Those eyes were breathtaking-rich, vivid, and filled with a warmth that no one else had ever given her. Kath's breath caught in her throat as she looked into them, her heart twisting painfully inside her chest. How could I ever let him go? she wondered silently, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. When I love him this much? When he makes me feel more alive than I ever thought possible?

"What? Kath, tell me what's wrong?" he asked softly, his voice low and laced with such genuine worry that it nearly broke her heart. He leaned closer across the small table, reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair from her face, his touch so tender and gentle it sent shivers down her spine. "Talk to me, love. Whatever it is, we will face it together. Just tell me."

Kath bit her trembling lower lip, fighting to steady her voice as guilt and love warred fiercely within her. She looked away for a moment, gazing out at the glittering city lights before she finally found the courage to meet his gaze again. Her fingers twisted nervously in her lap, her chest rising and falling with every shaky breath.

"It's because of Olivia," she whispered, the words barely audible in the quiet air. "She likes you, Gavin. She has loved you for so long-ever since we were children, ever since that vacation in Hawaii. I can't just ignore that. I don't want to hurt her. She's my best friend... my only true friend. If she finds out about us, she will be devastated. I can't bear to be the one to break her heart."

Gavin let out a soft sigh, his expression softening into something understanding yet fiercely determined. He reached across the table again, covering her cold, trembling hands with his warm, strong ones, holding them gently but firmly, as if to anchor her to him.

"Baby," he murmured, his voice deep and steady, washing over her like a soothing wave. "If she is truly your friend-if she loves you the way you love her-then she will be happy for you. She will understand that love cannot be forced or planned. She will want you to be happy... happy with me."

Kath shook her head slowly, tears finally spilling over and rolling silently down her cheeks, tracing shining paths against her skin. She pulled her hands gently from his, her heart aching.

"No, Gavin," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "You don't understand. She has dreamed of you for years. She has always believed that you were meant for her. The moment she learns that it's me-the one she trusts most-that you chose... she will hate me. She will never forgive me. I would lose her forever, and I can't do that. I can't choose one love over another... or can I?"

He stood up from his chair, walked around the table until he stood right beside her, and knelt down so that they were eye‑level. His face was close to hers, his warm breath brushing her skin, his gaze intense and unwavering.

"Kathryna," he said firmly but softly, his voice commanding yet tender, making her look straight into his soul. He lifted his thumb and gently wiped away each tear from her cheeks, his touch so gentle it felt like a caress of silk. "Listen to me carefully, my love. I do not love Olivia. I never have. I do not look at her the way I look at you. I don't want anyone else-not any girl at this university, not anyone in this world-except you. Only you."

Those words hung in the air like a beautiful promise, wrapping around Kath's heart and filling it with a sudden, soaring joy she could not contain. Her chest felt light, as if a heavy weight had been lifted away. He loves me, she thought, her heart swelling until it felt as though it might burst with happiness. He truly loves me.

For so long she had carried guilt and fear, thinking she was being selfish, thinking she was betraying her best friend. But in this moment, hearing his confession, seeing the absolute truth in his eyes, something inside her shifted. If what they shared was real love-deep, honest, and worth fighting for-then maybe, just for once, she could allow herself to be selfish. She could choose her own happiness. She could be the woman he loved, no matter what anyone else thought. Call me selfish. Call me a bad friend. Call me anything you want, she thought fiercely. But I love him, and I will not let him go.

Without another word, she reached up, tangled her fingers in the soft hair at the nape of his neck, and pulled him toward her, pressing her lips to his in a kiss that held all her longing, all her fear, and all the love she had hidden for so long.

The moment their lips touched, the world seemed to vanish completely. It was a kiss of pure passion-fiery yet tender, hungry yet gentle-igniting sparks and fireworks behind her closed eyes, as if every star in the sky had fallen just to shine for them. His lips were warm and soft against hers, moving in perfect rhythm, answering every beat of her heart. His arms wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest so she could feel the strong, steady thud of his heart matching her own. The scent of expensive leather, warm cologne, and sweet roses surrounded her, making her head spin with dizzy delight. All thoughts of Olivia, all worries, all fear-they faded into nothingness, leaving only this: Gavin, holding her, loving her, kissing her as if she were the most precious thing in existence.

When they finally pulled apart, gasping softly for breath, their foreheads rested against each other. His green eyes were dark and burning with every emotion imaginable-love, adoration, happiness, and a sweet, heated desire that made her pulse race. He brushed his nose against hers, his gaze never leaving hers.

"I love you, Kath," he whispered against her lips, the words warm and reverent, meant only for her ears. "More than I can ever say. More than anything in this life."

Kath threw her arms around his neck, pressing herself as close as she possibly could, clinging to him as if her life depended on it. She buried her face against the soft fabric of his leather jacket, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, feeling safe, cherished, and completely at home for the first time in her life.

"I love you too... Gav" she murmured back softly, using the special name only she used for him, the name that felt intimate and private. She breathed him in, letting his love fill every corner of her heart. "So much. I never thought I could feel like this... never knew love could be like this."

They stayed like that for a long, timeless moment, holding each other under the glowing city lights, wrapped in the magic of the night and the truth of their feelings.

Then Gavin gently pulled back just enough to look at her face again, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear with a soft smile. His expression was tender but urgent.

"My love," he whispered, "I think we should go now. It's getting late, and we don't want anyone to see us here or cause any trouble. We have so much more to share, and I don't want tonight to end."

Kath nodded silently, her heart light and full of hope. She stood up with his help, smoothing her dress, and allowed him to lead her out of the rooftop restaurant, past the dazzling lights and the delicious remains of their dinner, toward the waiting elevator.

Down on the street, the cool night air brushed against her skin, refreshing and sweet. Gavin led her to his sleek, luxurious car, opening the passenger door for her like a gentleman, helping her settle comfortably inside before sliding into the driver's seat beside her. As he started the engine, Kath could not help but let her eyes roam over him-taking in every detail: the way his dark hair fell perfectly over his forehead, the sharp, handsome line of his jaw, the way his leather jacket fit his broad shoulders, the focused intensity in his profile as he watched the road ahead. They are right, she thought with a shy smile. He truly is the most beautiful man I have ever seen.

As if he could feel her gaze, a slow, confident smirk spread across his lips. He turned his head slightly to glance at her, his eyes sparkling with amusement and warmth. Without breaking his concentration on driving, he reached over and rested his hand gently on her thigh, his palm warm and firm against the smooth black fabric of her dress.

Kath's breath hitched instantly, her heart skipping a beat. A wave of heat rushed through her body, making her cheeks flush bright pink. No one had ever touched her like this-so openly, so possessively yet respectfully. She had never been in love before, never had a boyfriend, never worried about romance or losing her innocence during her school years. She had always kept her heart guarded, never felt drawn to any boy, never allowed anyone to get close enough to touch her like this. But with Gavin... everything was different. His touch felt natural, right, as if it belonged there. He was her first everything-her first crush, her first love, her first kiss, her first boyfriend. And she wouldn't trade this feeling for anything in the world.

She shifted slightly in her seat, her fingers lightly brushing over the back of his hand resting on her thigh. "So..." she asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper, curious and excited all at once. "Where are you taking me now? I thought we were just going to drive around or... maybe go home?"

He kept his eyes on the winding city road, the lights passing over his face in streaks of gold and shadow. A soft, knowing smile played on his lips as he answered her.

"I'm taking you somewhere very special," he said gently. "I want to introduce you to my parents... and to some of the most important people in my life. I want them to meet the woman who has captured my heart completely."

Kath froze, her eyes widening in utter shock. She stared at him, her heart pounding hard against her ribs. She had not expected this-not tonight, not so soon. She knew they were moving faster than she had ever imagined possible, that their relationship had grown deep and intense in such a short time. But meeting his parents? That was a huge step-serious, meaningful, life‑changing. Nervousness fluttered in her stomach, but it was quickly washed away by a wave of warm certainty. She did not care how fast they were moving. As long as she was with Gavin-with Harry-she felt safe, brave, and ready for anything the future might bring.

He turned his head for a brief moment, seeing the surprise and slight anxiety in her eyes. He reached for her hand, intertwining his strong fingers with hers, bringing their joined hands to rest over her heart. He rubbed his thumb slowly and soothingly against the soft skin of her palm, sending waves of calm through her entire being.

"Baby," he murmured softly, his voice full of reassurance and love. "You're going to be just fine. Don't worry at all. They will love you-how could they not? You are perfect. You are everything I have ever wanted. Just stay by my side, hold my hand, and everything will be alright. I promise you."

Kath squeezed his hand tightly, looking at him with eyes full of love and trust. Outside, the city lights continued to blur past them, but inside the car, everything felt still and peaceful-filled with the warmth of their love, the promise of forever, and the beautiful, thrilling uncertainty of what lay ahead.

She leaned her head gently against his shoulder, closing her eyes as happiness wrapped around her like a warm blanket. She had chosen him-chosen love-and she knew, deep in her soul, that no matter what challenges or heartache might come, as long as they walked this path together, hand in hand, nothing could ever tear them apart.
